How to Get Published Free Sample The information on this page is an excerpt from the FabJob Guide to Become a Romance Writer . It is only a small sample of the valuable information contained in the 127 page complete guide. How to Write a Proposal an Editor will Love “A common problem is that an author will send in a proposal that has no spark. They’ve done everything right—except imbue the story with spirit.”
— Brenda Chin, Editor at Harlequin One of the most important parts of your proposal is the synopsis . A synopsis is a short recap of what happens in your book. You sum up the story in 2-10 pages , hitting the high points. Think of the blurb on the back cover of a book, only with more details. I believe a winning synopsis can get you a request for your entire book. The problem is, where do you even start with a synopsis? How do you sum up 50,000 or 100,000 words in 10 or fewer pages? People often dread writing a synopsis. They moan and groan and gripe and whine. Why do I have to do this? I wrote the book, can’t they just read that? Well, actually, no. Again, editors are really busy. Many have offices that look like they are carpeted in manuscripts. I remember reading an article by Malle Vallick of Harlequin Duets where she said her dream is to be able to see her carpet and what color it is. She vaguely remembers it as being pink. Imagine, that is the mountain of work with only proposals to read through. Read the whole manuscript? Dream on!

How to Write a Romance Novel
"Know the romance market," says Sheri McGregor, author of "Under One Roof." Romance novels made up more than 50 percent of mass market fiction sold in 1997. "Read in the genre and find where you think your story ideas fit. Get the guidelines. Then write your story with the market in mind, without letting go of your story's heart," McGregor says. Steps: Know the story you want to tell, and know your characters. Join a writer's critique group, either online or face-to-face. Write, write and write more. Nothing helps more than practicing your craft. Develop a thick skin. No one writes a masterpiece the first time. Learn from criticism, but don't lose the voice that makes your writing unique. Read books about writing, such as Anne Lamott's "Bird by Bird," Natalie Goldberg's "Writing Down the Bones," or Evan Marshall's "The Marshall Plan for Writing a Novel." Study your market, and be prepared to write for a specific genre.

The Write Page
The WritePage is an on-line newsletter with over 300 pages of author and book information for readers and how-to information for writers of genre fiction. Genre fiction is fiction you read because you want to, not because the professor says to and not because you think it will improve your mind. It might make you think, but that is an undocumented side effect. Genre fiction may be: science fiction romance novels, historical novels, murder mysteries, techno-thrillers weird tales, and anything else entertaining. The listings also include a few children's and young adult books, non-fiction poetry , and small press publications. This site changes frequently as authors join and books are added ... I suggest that you bookmark the genre pages that interest you and check every couple of weeks to see who has been added, or check the listing of on-site authors to see if your favorite author has joined. There is a page with all coming releases, arranged by month, if you are short on time. Yes, I know the list seems to be two months out of date, but the books are still in the stores as "new" because of the weird way the publishing industry distributes them. Book distribution is erratic, and the books your town gets often depends on the personal opinion of a single distributor's sales representative about what the bookstores want. The best way to be sure you get a book you want is to ask your local bookstore to order it, and ask about three months ahead of the release date. If you don't find what you want, tell the management of the store. It's your money.
