Willing Surrender:
the Politics of Writing Romance
Introduction When the manila folder containing my mother's unpublished romance novel arrived in the mail, it came with a few scraps of memorabilia in it: an encouraging note from me "Mom! A definite best-seller. (This will sell! ) I want more ... write! E.W." and two Harlequin romance novel covers I designed, with the appropriate teasing captions, titles, and Harlequin symbols in their upper left corners. Re-reading the captions transported me back eleven years, to a time when, it seemed, I lived and breathed the Harlequin romance. For the novel cover I had titled, Love Me, Cowboy, I contrasted the heroine's professional success (as a singer) with her success in romance, the built-in assumption being that The Relationship was what really mattered. Pamela walked on stage, breathless. 'This song is called, 'Love me, cowboy ...' she began. A cheer broke out in the crowd. Bob Harrison smiled and urged her on. She sung the ballad in a clear, sweet tone, her voice quivering with emotion toward the end, and when she was finished, glistening with sweat and exhausted, she heard the crowd cry for more. She smiled. After all, no one knew her heart was really breaking... Harlequin-flavored rhetoric had crept into my writing almost unconsciously, so that even my most casually written notes betrayed that perky, feisty, plucky heroine's voice. On the romance novel cover titled

Romance Writing " The romance market is the most interesting and lucrative field in publishing today. New windows of opportunity have opened to talented writers with persistence and determination. Prolific authors who consider themselves storytellers, rather than literary greats with an inclination to change the world, often resent the analysis of a commercial endeavor. Romance novelists are entertainers. They write from the heart with inspiration and hope. Scholars who try to decipher their words usually fail. The message of the romance novel is not a complicated one. It is above all else a love story. Complications set in when a critic examines the various types of romance, its categories and sub-genres."

Tips and Tricks to Writing Romance
By Mary Beth Lee If you're anything like me, you just finished reading a book and you know you can do better.
If that's your inspiration for writing romance, stop right now. You might be right, but that's not going to get you published. The writer who decides to make the huge commitment of writing a book needs more internal motivation than, she thinks she can do better than the author of the book she just read.
Yes, it's fun to write romance. Yes, it's a blast to create characters and settings and basically play God. But writing anything is tough. Your characters are going to wake you up at 2 in the morning and make you write. Chances are you're going to receive a few (or a million) rejections before you get The Call.
For every great book you write, there are 100 more people sending in manuscripts. Chances are your first book isn't even going to be awesome. It'll be rewarding and amazing to you, but it really is a learning tool.
My road to publication is not yet finished. I've been writing part time for five years and it's only in the last year that I found my true internal motivation for continuing. I don't write because I can do better than so and so. I write because writing is my craft. I'm an artist, and I've chosen the romance genre to express my art because I love happy endings.

ROMANCE WRITING
Every romance novel has a central love story and a satisfying and optimistic ending. The main plot involves two people falling in love and striving to make the relationship work. The romantic book centers on the love story and the end of the book resolves the love story. The romance writer can include as many subplots as he/she likes as long as the relationship clash is the main story. Romance novels end in a way that makes the reader feel good and are based on the idea that good people are rewarded and evil people are punished. Once the central love story and feel good factors are met, a romance novel can be set anywhere and involve any number of plot elements.
Romance Genres
There are many genres, follows a list of the most popular:
  • Historical Romance: romances set before the World Wars.
Contemporary Romance: romances set after the World Wars.
Romantic Suspense: romances containing mystery and intrigue.
Paranormal Romance: romances containing magic, fantasy or science fiction elements.
Inspirational Romance: romances containing spiritual themes.
