The following lesson plans and activities are designed to build such skills as creative writing, observing, vocabulary development and art appreciation. They can be used independently of each other and are not intended for use in any particular sequence. You can choose the activities that are most appropriate for your curriculum.
A. Composition - What could be easier than fighting the many-headed Hydra, stealing the Golden Fleece from a fire-breathing dragon, escaping from a labyrinth or flying with wings of wax and feathers? Students can demonstrate how easy it is by writing "How To" compositions based on these tasks. - Students can use their knowledge of the myths as a foundation for writing character sketches. What were Hera, Pan, Athena and the other gods and goddesses really like? Students will be able to disclose to the world the truth about these characters in the sketches they write. - Students can also use the myths as a basis for writing opinion essays. Should mortals be allowed on Mt. Olympus? This notable topic was never settled in Ancient Greece. It is up to your students to resolve the issue by developing persuasive argumentative essays. Other topics to consider: why (or why not) were the Labors of Hercules sufficient to absolve him of the crime of killing his children? If you were the judge, what punishment would you have administered to Tantalus for stealing the nectar of the gods? After reading the story of King Midas, what do you think is more important wealth or wisdom?

Subjects
  • Language Arts
Grades
Brief Description
Students create persuasive TV commercials for common products.
Objectives
Students
  • work in cooperative groups (optional).
  • brainstorm product features and identify the most marketable uses.
  • write TV commercials to persuade consumers to buy products.
  • dramatize the commercials for videotaping.
Keywords
advertise, advertisement, persuade, persuasive, essay, writing, TV, commercial, media, marketing, consumer, store, shop
Materials Needed
  • a list of commonly used products
  • video camera
Lesson Plan
Discuss with students the concept and purpose of persuasive writing. Discuss and watch, if possible TV commercials that are particularly persuasive. Ask: What aspect of each commercial, such as words, images, creative dialogue, or spokesperson, is most effective in persuading consumers? Invite students to work on their own, or organize them into groups of four or five. Provide each student or group with the name of a commonly used household item, such as soap, shampoo, or toothpaste. Allow students time to brainstorm new uses for their products; than ask them to write commercials aimed at persuading others to buy their products.

BEACH BALL PRACTICE ACTIVITIES
GRADES: 1-7
Students with disabilities often need more practice than other students to master skills. Using a "programmed" beach ball is a fun way to fit drill and practice in without boring the kids. This idea was shared with me at a math workshop I attended last summer.
MATERIALS:
  • beach balls (as many as you can affordthey're very versatile) permanent marking pen
METHOD:
  • Blow up the beach ball and hold it with the air hole facing upward. Beach balls are already nicely sectioned (kind of like an orange). So, all you have to do next is draw lines horizontally with a permanent marking pen to create several little boxes on your beach ball. Program the boxes with various information that students need to practice (ideas follow). Some Ideas: In each box, write a number from one to nine. Throw the ball to students and ask them what numbers their thumbs are on. When they tell you, ask them to either add, subtract, multiply or divide. This is an easy activity to individualize because you can ask different students to do different things with the numbers. I also found that it helps students with mathematics vocabulary. (Some of my students always say "take away" or "times" rather than the proper vocabulary). You could even say "find the product" to further reinforce vocabulary.

4th - 6th Grade Lesson Plan and World Wide Web Project
Title: Successful Paragraphs Author: Cathy Baker Adapted from Martha Adams; Jefferson Elementary, Everette, WA and Mitzi Merrill; Staff Development Specialist, Snohomish, WA Grade Level: Subject: Language Arts, Writing Overview: When 4th - 6th graders are asked to write a paragraph, the result is often a few short, choppy sentences beginning with the, an, a, or I. This activity guides students through the writing process for a successful five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings. Repeating this process frequently with many, varied topics teaches students to use variety to create interesting paragraphs. Objective: As a result of this activity, the students will each write a five-sentence paragraph with varied sentence beginnings, correct spelling and punctuation, and appropriate margins. Resources/Materials: Teacher sample, paper and pencil for students. Activities and Procedures: Each step in this activity should be modeled by the teacher and result in a sample paragraph for the students.
