The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper
Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers.
Writing an Essay
An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts:
  • Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction last , after you clearly know what arguments you develop in the essay.

    HISTORICAL RESEARCH:
    THE HISTORIAN'S CRAFT
IMPORTANT: This is one of a set of Library Research Guides for patrons doing research on History in the FSU Libraries (see end of this guide). Generally, due to space considerations, titles mentioned in one guide are not repeatedly mentioned in others.
    GETTING STARTED
Information about the actual researching and writing of history can be found under a number of topics in the Libraries' catalog. Some useful subject headings are:
    HistoryMethodology
    HistoryResearch
    Historiography*
*Note: This term has two meanings: a) the history of history and b) the study of the writing of history. All of the above terms can also be used as subdivisions under other subject terms, for example,
    United StatesHistoryResearch
    RESEARCHING AND WRITING: HANDBOOKS
The titles below are useful reading for the practicing historian. While older titles make no mention of computers, the savvy user will also look for a modern electronic version of the tools to which they refer.

Tanika Sarkar The present Indian government is a coalition one, dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). What is little-known, however, is that the BJP is the electoral wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS provides daily sessions of ideological and martial education to millions of people across the country, and coordinates a large and varied spectrum of subsidiary fronts, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) which is its religious wing. The VHP has pioneered immense violence against Muslim and Christian minorities in the last decade. The various fronts have overlapping, multiple membership, the leaders of each front also are important Sangh functionaries. What is even less recognised is that the RSS has been functioning for the last seventy odd years continuously, that it cultivated direct links with the Italian and German fascists, and that its founders acknowledged the influence of fascist authoritarianism, militarism and racism quite openly at one time. It might seem strange that in the middle of its designs about a transition to a highly authoritarian, militaristic, nuclearised Hindu nationhood, the Sangh combine invests a lot of attention to the writing of history. It is redirecting the production of school textbooks to promote an abrasive nation-worship and religious nationalism. It strenuously objects to all left-oriented historical writings. It is systematically packing all research organisations and funding bodies with trusted right-wingers. It tries to stop publication of edited volumes of archival documents dealing with the period of the anti-imperialist movement. A systematic smear campaign is directed at left historians to discredit their academic credentials and personal integrity. Important segments of the media are pressed into the service of the smear campaign.

Researchers who intend to spend more than three weeks in Syria need the sponsorship of an officially recognized cultural or research center in order to acquire an iqâma , or residency permit, and in order to get access to primary sources other than newspapers. The relevant cultural centers and research institutes include the American Cultural Center (P.O.B. 29, Damascus, Syria, fax: (963-11) 332-1456), l'Institut Français des Études Arabes à Damas (IFEAD), l'Institut Français d'Archeologie du Proche Orient (IFAPO), Deutsches Archäologisches Institut and the Goethe Institute (through their language-training program). Americans with US government funding can usually get sponsorship through the American Cultural Center. One can also get an iqâma by enrolling in Damascus University or the Institute for Teaching Arabic to Foreigners (Ma'had li-ta'lim al-Lugha al-'Arabiyya lil-Ajanib).

One of the most exciting components of the Virtual St. Louis website is the possibility of having one's students conduct authentic historical research and publish that information on the website. There are two ways that students can contribute to the website. First, they can actually build a block on the left side of the screen, researching buildings which will be rendered in the model. Second, they can research and write historical information for the right side of the screen. By completing either task or both, students will learn the historian's craft and experience the excitement of acting as an historical detective. Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will:
    • Learn and apply historical research skills. Edit and revise one's work. Ask historical questions and discover answers through research.
    Show Me Standards

This will prove useful in researching The Young City , but I will need much more than two hours to do this job properly. I strongly suspect that the Globe was something of an evangelical Protestant paper in 1884. It wasn't difficult to find articles on temperence, much of it preceded with the title "SCOTT ACT CAMPAIGN". Since Faith is a suffragette, and temperence went hand in hand with that movement, I'm thinking that temperence has to have a part to play in this story. Here's an article: The Globe - Tuesday, July 1, 1884

The Role of Journal Writing in Historical Thinking
By D. Antonio Cantu "I think of writing as a way of seeing. It's a way of bringing out the specialness of ordinary things."
The format with which I have had the most success is journal writing. For me, journal writing seems an ideal instructional tool for taking students to higher order cognitive learning levels and for achieving many of the affective learning goals I have identified as requisite to deeper understanding. I have also found journal writing to be a very effective means for integrating all of the elements of historical thinking into my curriculum. When I speak of historical thinking, I am referring to the definition outlined in the National Standards for History , which includes the following components:
    Chronological Thinking
    • Historical Comprehension Historical Analysis and Interpretation Historical Research Capabilities Historical Issues-Analysis and Decision-Making1
I never want to sacrifice content for process, and journal writing does not require that of those who choose to utilize it in the classroom. Another benefit of journal writing for me has been the tremendous flexibility inherent in its design. Journal writing activities can be assigned on a daily, weekly and/or semester basis and can be worked out in various formats: notebooks, index cards, typed documents, 3.5" computer disks, protected/secure web pages, and e-mail messages.

Introduction to art historical research Research for an art history paper can be challenging and intimidating. At first, it might seem like trying to find your way in total darkness to an unknown destination. Fortunately, there are a number of tools to help you negotiate the journey. These tools are the art historical equivalents of flashlights, maps, and road-signs, to help you find your way to an intellectual destination. If you learn how to use them, then research can become challenging and satisfying. Before describing those helpful tools, let's start with some general expectations for art historical research. A major objective in art history research is to become informed. You want to find out as much as possible about the research theme, and about what others have said about it. In other words, after you have a topic of research, before you can create your paper's thesis, you must find many sources. Sources are what we call the general category of published treatments of your theme they may be in a journal article, in a specialized encyclopedia, in a book, or on a website (each of which is discussed in more detail below). The first real challenge of doing research is an Easter-egg-hunt for sources. And the beauty of it is, each time you find one source, you'll find many more packed inside. That's because every scholarly article will have footnotes and bibliographic references to more sources on the topic. So one source will invariably lead you to many more. Even if you dislike or dismiss a particular author's thesis, the sources he or she cited may be invaluable.

Further, there were widely contrasting sociological conditions in the past which would affect the psychological interpretation of historical writing. Spectrum is uniquely qualified to interpret writing of previous centuries providing those who are researching family history with an in-depth, psychological profile of family ancestors. Handwriting analysis is a unique tool for unlocking a door into the past. Authors, biographers or researchers investigating the personality of historical characters also benefit with the psychological information that handwriting analysis can provide. Spectrum explores the personality of historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln . Additionally, investigative research has been done on manuscripts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, handwriting from the National Archives , and the ancient origins of handwriting symbolism.

Visiting Assistant Professor of History (97-98) Though the project is fundamentally complete, materials for the project are still being developed and several other tasks remain to be done. These include editing and making the Web site more interactive, completing all of the exercises and polishing the tutorial. When the Web site and tutorial are finished, they will be used in courses scheduled for 1999-2000. The original proposal described a bibliographic tutorial to be used in conjunction with the History department's required Junior Seminar, which is offered twice each year. (Several other Reed departments offer similar junior seminars, and I hope that they will ultimately be able to use parts of this project as a model.) These seminars are designed to develop students' research and writing skills in preparation for the year-long, required senior thesis. While junior seminars provide instruction in research methods in particular disciplines, they also include intensive study of texts in that discipline. The History junior seminar combines ten weeks of reading and conference participation with seminars on library research as well as brief lectures and hand-outs on writing. Because so much is demanded of them, students frequently need extra instruction, especially in research techniques. The main goal of the course is to enable students to successfully plan and execute a thirty-page history research paper over the course of one term. Most instructors ask students to break this task into steps, which are evaluated as they submit an initial research proposal, an annotated bibliography, a first and final draft of the research paper, and a final oral presentation to their classmates. The course also features two seminar sessions on library research techniques, usually conducted by Reed librarian Marilyn Kierstead.
