Internet Research Resources for Historical Writers
By Greg Knollenberg There is no question that the Web contains more information on current news and events than any other medium. It also contains a large and growing amount of historical reference material. This material covers everything from archaeology to modern American history. As with most online research, the key to historical research on the Internet is knowing where and how to search. Writers and researchers need to take special care with historical reference information to ensure that historical dates, facts and figures are accurate. Keep a core list of sites at your disposal through bookmarks that you trust so you can check or validate any information you find. In addition to facts and figures, historical websites can also be a source for detailed information about the living conditions and lifestyles in a given time period. This article will guide you to some of the best general historical resources and sites from which you can find more historical resources on your own. Finding Historical Resources The most common method for finding historical information is to use a search engine or directory. For information on using search engines, be sure to read "

The Writing of a Historical Essay or Research Paper
Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers.
Writing an Essay
An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts:
  • Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction last , after you clearly know what arguments you develop in the essay.

British History Links Course Requirements Office Hours Writing history is about making decisions. Historians choose from a broad range of subjects, selecting those they think are most important. They choose source materials carefully, assessing evidence that may support or contradict their arguments. And they choose ways to write, balancing respect for their subjects with the needs of their audience. -William Keller Storey, Writing History: A Guide for Students (Oxford, 1999), 1 Schedule of Classes and Assignments : Reading should be completed before the class assigned; Assignment due dates are given below and on assignment sheet handouts: week 1. Introduction. "Professor Trevor-Roper tells us that the historian `ought to love the past.' This is a dubious injunction. To love the past may easily be an expression of the nostalgic romanticism of old men of old societies, a symptom of loss of faith and interest in the present or future." [Edward Hallett Carr, What Is History?

Guide to Writing Your Historical Research Paper
A successful historical research essay will normally include all of the following items: Introduction, Statement of Thesis, Discussion of Historical Background, Argument and Documentation, and Conclusion. There is no hard-and-fast rule about the order in which these sections should appear, with the exception of the Introduction, which appears at the beginning, and the Conclusion, which appears at the end. In addition, there is no rule as to how long each part should be and the relative length of the various sections. These decisions will be governed by your topic and the historical approach of your essay. Part of what an historian does is to decide how to approach an historical topic and to construc t an historical essay to fit the topic he or she has chosen to address.

Introduction: This section of the essay introduces the reader to the topic and to your particular historical approach on the topic. Some historians like to "set the scene" with an anecdote that illustrates something important or interesting, or which catches the interest of the reader and focuses it on the essay's topic. Others prefer to state vital data and background to the topic (one example of this would be a biographical essay which starts with information about when and where a person was born, etc.) The way you begin your essay is very much a matter of personal taste. One way to get started is to review other historical works that you have read, and emulate them. Many find it easier to write the introduction after they have written the body of the essay; others like to write it first thing.

LACC English Lab Welcome to a unique academic experience. “City of Angels: A Multidisciplinary Study of Los Angeles” examines the city’s essence and identity through the great works and lives of its writers, scholars, artists, filmmakers, historians, journalists, visionaries, and just plain folk. By studying LA’s history, architecture, environment and ethnicity, the last of which has earned it the identification as the American multicultural Mecca of the Twenty-first century, this course focuses on LA as one of the truly unique “wonder” cities of the world. It attempts, ultimately, to explain how Los Angeles, whose history has been built on contradictory poles of myth and reality (from the Spanish “sacred expedition,” the Yankee boosters’ “paradise found,” and even its seductive Mediterranean climate, to its earthquakes, overpopulation, wildfires, gangsters, bad cops and riots), reflects both the promise and betrayal of the American dream. After the city’s two huge population booms of the 1880s and 1920s, caused by a series of spectacular technological advances and sleazy backroom deals, the myth of El Dorado started to fade. The great Depression, refugees from genocidal tyranny in Europe and the American South, and victims of illness from the harsh climates of the East and Midwest, combined with the city’s unregulated growth, all helped produce the literary, cinematic and artistic anti-myth representation of a dystopian Los Angeles of the 1930s and 40s. Writers like Chandler, Fante, Fitzgerald, Huxley, Cain, West, Mann and Waugh all proclaimed the decline of modern civilization as evidenced by the physical and moral corruption of this once utopian paradise of Southern California.
