providing students with the opportunity to study writing as a discipline, a means of self-expression, and a professional tool. photo by Nicholas Altenbernd The MIT Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies gives students the opportunity to learn the techniques, forms, and traditions of several kinds of writing, from basic expository prose to more advanced forms of non-fictional prose, fiction and poetry, science writing, scientific and technical communication and digital media. Our faculty consists of novelists, essayists, poets, translators, biographers, historians, engineers and scientists. Program subjects are arranged by four areas: exposition and rhetoric, creative writing, science writing and technical communication. In each area introductory subjects lead to more specialized advanced subjects. Introductory subjects are designed for students with little experience in writing. Advanced subjects are for students who have mastered the elements of sentence and paragraph structure. A number of the advanced subjects use writing as a vehicle to explore humanistic and scientific issues in a broad cultural context.

Beyond Harry Potter
"The idea that we could have a child who escapes from the confines of the adult world and goes somewhere where he has power, both literally and metaphorically, really appealed to me." Like that of her own character, Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling's life has the luster of a fairy tale. Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at a table in a café during her daughter's naps - and it was Harry Potter that rescued her. First, the Scottish Arts Council gave her a grant to finish the book. After its sale to Bloomsbury (UK) and Scholastic Books, the accolades began to pile up. Harry Potter won The British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, and the Smarties Prize, and rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Book rights have been sold to England, France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Spain and Sweden.

Other Writing Sites The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is additionally an excellent resource for questions. They have a hotline for grammar and mechanics specifics. AVOIDING PLAGIARISM The following guide defines and describes plagiarism and gives general guidelines for using sources in essays.
Policies on plagiarism may vary from course to course, and in some fields the definition of plagiarism may need to be extended or modified. If you have questions, check with your instructor or a reliable documentation guide in the field. Plagiarism Defined
Plagiarism is turning in or passing off someone else's work as your own. Sometimes, the line between borrowing and stealing is unclear. In an intellectual community, ideas are passed around freely. Most intellectual inquiry could not take place without borrowing from the work of others. Responsible, honest writers indicate their debts to others by clearly citing material that they have borrowed. Irresponsible or dishonest writers often fail to cite their borrowings and thus become guilty of plagiarism.
Plagiarized work is easy to recognize because it does not clearly indicate borrowing. It is full of facts, observations, and ideas the writer could not have developed on his or her own and is written in a different style. Experienced writers rely almost as much as plagiarizers on other writers; they know that their ideas are generated in the context of the ideas of others. As a matter of honor, they indicate their debts to other writers and by doing so they more clearly indicate their own original contributions.

    General CV tips
  • These days you can write your CV in the first person (i.e. I have) or the third person (i.e. he/she has). However, you do not need to use 'I', 'he' or 'she' in a CV because its use is implied. Do mention things you are good at, but do not go over the top. You can oversell yourself. Don't mention things that you are bad at or say negative things about yourself in your CV. Make sure that the CV you write conjures up the right image of you and your skills, capabilities and achievements. If you do not match the picture you have painted with your CV at the interview, then your application will not be taken further. Be careful when you use abbreviations - they can be misunderstood.

    Introduction
The Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) staff at the National Science Foundation (NSF) often provide informal guidance to proposers. Staff members give workshops on proposal writing, answer questions by phone and e-mail, and talk to potential awardees at professional meetings and at NSF. The following is the essence of the advice often given to inquirers. These suggestions for improving proposals were collected from a variety of sources, including NSF Program Directors, panel reviewers, and successful grantees. Ultimately, proposals are peer reviewed in panels consisting of colleagues in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology disciplines or related fields, and the success in obtaining funding depends in great measure on reviewers' opinions and their written reviews. "What makes a good proposal?" A good proposal stems from a good concept. Other things being equal, the better the idea, the more likely the proposal is to be funded. The best proposals are those to which the reviewers respond, " Of course, I wish I had thought of that!" The most important thing is a project that will benefit undergraduate education and directly affect student opportunities to learn. That said, however, the proposal must be written in sufficient detail to allow reviewers to understand:

    INTRODUCTION
History of the State of Kansas a facetious though complimentary notice in his Kansas City Star column. His story revealed that a substantial legend about the book had accumulated during the eight years since it was first published. After summarizing the main facts which emphasized the great size and cost of the work, Prentis continued humorously:
    THE PREPARATION
History of the State of Kansas , or "Herd Book," was published by the Western Historical Company, of which Alfred Theodore Andreas (1839-1900) was proprietor. Andreas had embarked upon a formidable program of preparation and publication of state and other local history. This was in the early 1880's after some experience in a related field. His Western Historical Company was the outgrowth of the Andreas Atlas Company, which among other things had published in 1874

    First Incantation: The Coke Incident
    Thursday, 3rd June, 2004:
First in a series intended to relate some of my first year of school.
April . My friend sat crookedly on a bean-bag chair, his eyes wide with an almost amphibian gaze as invisible devils pranced around the room. I think he was trying to lean back, but what he actually did was spill his cup of water all over himself. It didn't matter, because he was already wet with beer. The delicate chemical balance in his brain had been interrupted by eight or nine beers he plays rugby, so that's not too unusual but the line of cocaine hit him hard.
And there he sat before me, huddled in the chair, his mind crushed under the iron weight of the amphetamines and alcohol. The pungent flavor of sweat and beer hung around him. Once again my friend's constant and reckless pleasure-seeking had turned against him, and I felt nothing but pity as his body shuddered with the effort of purging the many toxins from his body.

    138. Procedure For Writing A Term Paper
If it does not, try going back and sorting again for main divisions, tosee if another general pattern is possible. writing THE FIRST DRAFT.
    http://www.ucc.vt.edu/stdysk/termpapr.html
PROCEDURE FOR WRITING A TERM PAPER
Alton L. Raygor University of Minnesota
A term (or research) paper is primarily a record of intelligent reading in several sources on a particular subject. The task of writing such is not as formidable as it seems if it is thought out in advance as a definite procedure with systematic perpetration.
The procedure for writing such a report consists of the following steps:
  • Choosing a subject Finding sources of materials Gathering the notes Outlining the paper Writing the first draft Editing the paper
  • Now let's look at each of them.
    CHOOSING A SUBJECT
Most good papers are built around questions. You can find subjects in any textbook. Simply take some part of the text that interest you and examine it carefully. Ask yourself the following things about it to see if you can locate a question to answer in your paper. Does it tell you all you might wish to learn about the subject? Are you sure it is accurate? Does the author make any assumptions that need examining? Can two of the more interesting sections in the text be shown to be interrelated in some useful way? Your paper is an attempt to write a well-organized answer to whatever question you decide upon, using facts for the purpose of proving (or at least supporting) your contention. The most common error made by students in choosing a subject for a term paper is to choose one that is too general. (The most specific subject will always have enough aspects to furnish a long paper, if you think about it for a while.)

William T. Myers Assistant Professor of Philosophy Birmingham-Southern College bmyers@panther.bsc.edu WRITING A PHILOSOPHICAL ESSAY GENERAL GUIDELINES 1. You want to start your paper off with a clear statement of the question at hand. Not only should the question be stated clearly, but it is a good idea in the first paragraph or two to give a good clear statement as to how you are going to answer the question, i.e., what approach to the question you intend to take. 2. State your position and defend your answer. The main core of your paper should consist of a defense of the answer you gave. You should carefully define your position (so as to avoid possible misunderstandings) and defend it with reasons, relevant information and arguments. 3. Identify and formulate the strongest potential objection(s) to your position. Respond to the objection(s) and show how it/they aren't strong enough to refute your position. (This applies primarily to papers of 4 or more pages.) ORGANIZATION It is essential that your paper be well organized. 1. There should be a clear thesis statement at the beginning that serves as a road map through your paper.
