A short theme or paper (13 pages) may take 1-2 weeks. Successful writers usuallyfollow a general writing guideline of steps. A general writing Guideline.
http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/acadwrite/writeproc.html
LEO: Literacy Education Online The Writing Process Successful writing involves allowing enough time for each stage of writing. Each writer and assignment is different, but listed below is an approximate timeline to complete all of the activities for various papers. Time Management A research paper may take 5-8 weeks. A long paper (10 pages) may take 3-5 weeks. A shorter paper (3-5 pages) may take 1-2 weeks. A short theme or paper (1-3 pages) may take 1-2 weeks. Successful writers usually follow a general writing guideline of steps. Not every writer needs to do each step, and sometimes a step may need to be repeated, omitted, or moved to another location in the process. For example, some writers prefer to generate details and support before narrowing the topic. Following is a list to use as a starting point for developing you own methods and processes for writing. A General Writing Guideline
  • Find an idea or topic.
  • Formulate a thesis - narrow the topic.
  • Generate details - facts, examples, and support.
  • Outline if it seems helpful.

    Common Mistakes in Writing
We all make mistakes. It's inevitable. In fact, making mistakes is the only way we learn things. However, a writer should strive to be original, not only in writing, but also in the mistakes he or she makes. The editors are tired of seeing the same old clichés, mixed metaphors, redundancies, and just plain bonehead errors. Be creative! Make mistakes editors have never seen before.

    Planning
Good preparation is important. You should have a clearly articulated purpose for any usability activity. This also defines the purpose and content of the resulting report.
Gather as much information as you can during the usability activity. It is easy to discard useless information, but extremely difficult to recreate or recall data you have failed to gather.
Refer to 'Handling Logged Data' for more on this topic.
    Know your audience
It is necessary to have a good understanding of who will read the report, and why.
Most reports have more than one audience. For example, developers may read the report in detail, whereas management may read only summary pages.

    Writing Research Papers
Writing is easy. All you do is stare at a blank sheet of paper until drops of blood form on your forehead. - Gene Fowler A major goal of this course is the development of effective technical writing skills. To help you become an accomplished writer, you will prepare several research papers based upon the studies completed in lab. Note that research papers are not typical "lab reports." The latter tend to be informal internal reports, or in a teaching lab, answers to a set of questions.

    115. The Walker Percy Project
Essay on the postSouthern Renaissance author and the themes of Southern writing in general.
    http://www.ibiblio.org/wpercy/makowsky.html
    Walker Percy and Southern Literature
    Veronica Makowsky
Written for THE WALKER PERCY PROJECT (1996); Makowsky is the author of a number of books, including Caroline Gordon: A Biography (Oxford University Press, 1989); she is Professor of English at the University of Connecticut.
"I DON'T LIKE TO BE DESCRIBED as a Southern writer," declared Walker Percy in a 1989 interview. "The danger is, if you're described as a Southern writer, you might be thought of as someone who writes about a picturesque local scene like Uncle Tom's Cabin Gone With the Wind , something like that." ( More Conversations , 223). Percy frequently attempted to evade the danger of being labeled a "Southern writer" by stressing the more existentialist aspects of his work, but his fiction nonetheless remains very much a part of the Southern literary heritage. Southern literature, except for Faulkner, has largely been ignored in traditional American literature books and courses which privilege Northeastern American literary history, leading to the fear of being labeled a "Southern writer" that many Southern authors exhibit. Part I of this essay will briefly delineate the history and themes of Southern literature in order to reveal Percy's connections to his native literature in Part II.
    What is Southern Literature?

    • General Strategies for All Proofreading Specific Strategies for All Proofreading Section I: Proofreading for Revising a Draft Proofreading is a pain. There's no doubt about it. It can be tedious and boringif you approach it as correcting errors. But proofreading isn't correcting errors so much as it involves reviewing the paper for ideas and for readability. It allows you to read your draft, to consider what you've written, and to change your mind. It's an opportunity to clarifyfor yourself as well as for your readerwhat you've said and to make some choices. Proofreading is in your control, no one else's. No one, really, can proofread for you because the kinds of changes that come form proofreading are changes in your meaning, your intent, and your purpose in the draft. But while no one can proofread for you, others, a classmate, or a writing assistant at the Writing Resource Center, can help you proofread; they can help you assess the draft, propose some alternative solutions, and make some choices. So, while proofreading can be tedious, it doesn't have to be lonely. This handout covers two different kinds of proofreading: proofreading for revising or rewriting, which involves major reworking of the paper: rearranging the order of paragraphs, cutting material, adding new paragraphs and sections, and so on.

    Foreword
I began this document in 1978, when I was teaching undergraduate classes in electrical engineering and found that my students needed some guidance on grammar and style. I enlarged this document frequently during my ten years as a professor. During 1990-95, I shared this document with my colleagues in Germany who wanted to know more about style in American English. The favorable reaction of my former students and my German colleagues has encouraged me to post this document on the Internet, in the hope that it might be useful to a wider audience.

G.L. Kittredge and F.E. Farley: An Advanced English Grammar
originally published by Ginn in 1913, reprinted by AMS Press in New York City in 1972.
Teaching formal grammar became unfashionable in many schools in the USA in the 1970s, which has had disastrous consequences for the ability of professionals in the USA to produce erudite prose. The lack of modern reference books means that one must rely on old grammar books, like this one. This old book even contains conjugation of the verb to be for four tenses of the subjunctive mood. There are still some judges that use subjunctive mood for contrary-to-fact statements in writing their opinions, but use of the subjunctive seems to be rare in most other writings by American authors.
