    Communicating Chemistry
The following article is by John Garratt and Brian Mattinson . It has been copied from Education in Chemistry ), 1995 (with permission of the authors and the Royal Society of Chemistry).
A general guide to science writing
No one who has something original or important to say will willingly run the risk of being misunderstood; people who write obscurely are either unskilled in writing or up to mischief THERE ARE THREE fundamental aspects to good science writing - planning the structure, thinking about your reader, and choosing your words. Writing is one of our indispensable means of communication. But it is more than this: it helps us to formulate ideas, and provides us with a permanent record of them. For undergraduates it is also one of the means by which their understanding of their subject is assessed. Effective writing is therefore an invaluable skill. You can learn something of the skill by following the advice of experienced practitioners . You can also learn by reading widely and thinking critically about the quality of what you are reading. But you need constant practice to develop the clarity and conciseness of style that is essential to good scientific writing.
    Structure
When you have thought clearly, you have never had any difficulty in saying what you thought. And when you cannot expressyourself, depend upon it that you have nothing precise to express, and that what incommodes you is not the vain desire to express, but the vain desire to think more clearly

Anton Fokker was born in 1890 in the Dutch colonies. The family moved back to Holland for his education when he was 11, but he was not a very ardent student, and he only made it through his high school exams by means of a self invented crabbing-machine. He went to Germany to train in a car manufacturing school but decided on the spot that he preferred a newly started course in aviation. The one plane he and his class built was crashed by a pilot that couldn't fly and the course crashed with it. Instead of going back he built his own plane with money his father sent him. In 1910 he flew it for the first time; in 1911 he was giving demonstrations and joy-rides in it to make a living. He became an aeroplane manufacturer and show pilot, constantly worried by financial difficulties. Then war broke out and Fokker came into his own. Fokker planes became loved and feared. After the war the Dutch government still hesitated to buy aircraft from Fokker, so he sold the salvaged (German) surplus war production to Russia. A second main Fokker factory opened in America and Fokker became the largest civil aircraft manufacturer of the twenties. The all-metal Douglas DC1 of 1933 meant an end to the Fokker supremacy. A last brilliant stroke was the beautiful twin-tailed G-1 fighter of 1936, nicknamed the Reaper. Fokker died in America in 1939. The company went bankrupt in 1996.

From the Mind to the Computer Screen - A Creative Writing Strategy

    By Elaine Ernst Schneider
There you sit, looking at the computer screen. You have this wonderful idea floating around in your head, but no clue as to how to get started formulating the words to express it. Even creativity needs a plan. Try following a few simple steps to get organized. C - Conceive the notion. Take time to think your idea through. Don't just start to write. Jot down points you think you might like to make on a piece of paper near the computer. Leave it. Do something else. Come back to it. Does what you wrote on the paper still look like what you want to say? Are there other facets you might like to explore? Don't begin to write until your notes please you and express your idea. R - Relay and communicate the message you want the reader to glean from your piece. You might start by grouping the ideas you jotted down. Ask yourself what fits together well as a paragraph. Some writers number their paragraphs in the order they plan to use them. Use the strongest material first to write a convincing topic sentence. You want to snare the reader's attention right from the beginning. E - Explain

If you are unsure about how to go about it or simply don't know what to say, here are some tips about what to include and how to structure a typical letter of recommendation. This advice may also be useful if you request a letter of recommendation from someone who is not familiar with how to write one. First Paragraph Start out by specifying in what capacity and for how long you have know the person whom you are recommending. If the person is an employee or coworker, indicate the term of employment, the responsibilities of the position, and any significant projects undertaken by the individual. You may wish to include a sentence about the nature of your company and its activities. Here, you can also give a one-sentence summary or overview of your opinion of the recommended individual. Second Paragraph In the next paragraph provide a more detailed evaluation of the person as an employee. Describe his or her performance on specific assignments and list any important accomplishments. What are the individual's strengths or shortcomings in the workplace? What was it like to interact with him or her?
