Frequently Asked Questions File
Many of the questions I get by email touch on areas outside those covered by the articles I have archived at my site. Where I can, I revise the articles to incorporate additional information. These questions either fall outside the topics covered there or are so basic that they need to be covered again. I hope you will find this FAQ file useful. Questions about me: I have a manuscript that I want to have published. Can I send it to you?
Please don't. This is my personal WWW site, not the site of a publisher. I do work as an editorial consultant, and will do manuscript evalutations as part of that work (for a fee). You can find information about this elsewhere on my site. Please do not send a manuscript to me by email unless I specifically request that you do. So do you edit or critique manuscripts for writers?

Robert Szarka's Home Page
My Double Life
Dostoevsky, The Double Welcome to my little hole in cyberspace. This is my page's fourth location in ten years, but I hope this will be a permanent home. I'm still trying to decide if my life is getting simpler or just complicated in new ways. I was the proprietor of Brazerko Communications and the sysop of Sea of Noise BBS, while spending too much time and money studying economics . In 1997, I ran for Norwich City Council , while starting DownCity LLC and Chelsea Data Inc. (See this nifty guide to managing hackers .) Most recently I've been involved in starting Bizgrok and swinglovers.com . Busy? Yeah. But I still find time to export munitions bear arms boycott Amazon (over $550 spent with other online bookstores to date), crack RC5 , support Eldred v. Ashcroft , and dazzle audiences with my acrobatics . (OK, just kidding about that last one. That's the other Robert Szarka.) I don't generally find time to update this site, though, and sure as heck don't have time to make it pretty... Drop me a line at szarka@szarka.org

As a professional business writer and consultant , I have spent much of the last three years researching and developing practical writing tools designed to help the average person with their day-to-day writing needs. In cases where I have found that existing tools were inadequate or simply didn't exist, I have developed new ones. In other cases, where I found that quality writing tools have already been created by others, I have chosen to recommend those, rather than trying to "re-invent the wheel" myself. (about)

Writing, General Knowledge, and Postmodern Anthropology
Paul Smith
Paul Smith teaches Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. He is author of Pound Revised (Croom Helm, 1983), and Discerning the Subject (Univ. of Minnesota, 1988), and co-editor with Alice Jardine of Men in Feminism (Methuen, 1987). His next book, Clint Eastwood: A Cultural Production , will appear from Univ. of Minnesota Press in 1990 and a book of his translations of Jean Louis Schefer's work is due from Cambridge Univ. Press in 1990. The meditation on language that has constituted the backbone of the western epistemological tradition has perhaps never been so intense as right now in the era of the postmodern. And it might well be that current attention to the incessant buzz of language hides the fear of some that it's out of control and that the structuralist and poststructuralist attitude to it, since at least as far back as Foucault's " " is somewhat hopeless for the human beings that many of us still dub ourselves. At a time in history where advanced capitalism has commodified the very notion of being almost out of existence, the question of language keeps on re-emerging in new forms, like some kind of irrepressible pest. One effect of the pestilence in the USA is certainly the spectacle now of all disciplines in the humanities scratching away at language based theory, that foreign body left after the visitation of language. Perhaps "scratching away" isn't the right metaphor: most of these disciplines are trying to find ways of negotiating with, accommodating, and sometimes even aspiring to identification with the linguistic scavenger.

... Sources The Challenges of Writing History
What distinguishes History papers from the papers you might write in other courses? Perhaps the most difficult thing is the process of transforming facts into evidence, and evidence into argument. To the novice, facts will simply seem to be facts. But facts do not exist in a vacuum. One does not gather facts and expect them to speak for themselves. Rather, facts create different meanings depending upon what we do with them. For example, President X is assassinated. Fact A comes from an eyewitness who saw a man running away with a gun in his hand. Fact B comes from the autopsy, which says that President X did indeed die from a bullet wound to the head. From these facts we might conclude that the running man is the assassin. However, fact C from the ballistic report shows that the bullet that killed the president did not come from the running man's gun. Clearly we need more facts before we can determine our argument. Was there more than one gunman? Or have we simply identified the wrong man as the assassin? Clearly, the challenges that you are going to face when you write papers for your History courses are going to be more complex than the scenario we've provided above. But the principles are the same. One must gather one's facts and then go through the process of interpreting them. Once interpreted, facts begin to suggest patterns of evidence that will eventually lead the astute writer to her argument.

Introduction This guide has been created to assist my graduate students in thinking through the many aspects of crafting, implementing and defending a thesis or dissertation. It is my attempt to share some of the many ideas that have surfaced over the past few years that definitely make the task of finishing a graduate degree so much easier. (This Guide is a companion to the Guide for Writing a Funding Proposal Usually a guide of this nature focuses on the actual implementation of the research. This is not the focus of this guide. Instead of examining such aspects as identifying appropriate sample size, field testing the instrument and selecting appropriate statistical tests, this guide looks at many of the quasi-political aspects of the process. Such topics as how to select a supportive committee, making a compelling presentation of your research outcomes and strategies for actually getting the paper written are discussed. Of course, many of the ideas that are presented can be used successfully by other graduate students studying under the guidance of other advisers and from many different disciplines.

Writing Multiple-Choice Test Items. ERIC/AE Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC A notable concern of many teachers is that they frequently have the task of constructing tests but have relatively little training or information to rely on in this task. The objective of this Digest is to set out some conventional wisdom for the construction of multiple-choice tests, which are one of the most common forms of teacher-constructed tests. The comments which follow are applicable mainly to multiple-choice tests covering fairly broad topic areas. Before proceeding, it will be useful to establish our terms for discussing multiple-choice items. The "stem" is the introductory question or incomplete statement at the beginning of each item and this is followed by the options. The "options" consist of the answerthe correct optionand "distractors"the incorrect but (we hope) tempting options.
    GENERAL OBJECTIVES
As a rule, one is concerned with writing stems that are clear and parsimonious, answers that are unequivocal and chosen by the students who do best on the test, and distractors that are plausible competitors of the answer as evidenced by the frequency with which they are chosen. Lastly, and probably most important, we should adopt the attitude that items need to be developed over time in the light of evidence that can be obtained from the statistical output typically provided by a measurement services office (where tests are machine-scored) and from "expert" editorial review.

    http://www.utm.edu/~rirwin/SciWritingStyle.htm
Guide to Scientific Writing Style: Scientific writing is expected to be clear, concise, and straightforward. The following notes on style should be applied to everything you write for this course. Specific instructions for specific kinds of paper are given elsewhere. Instructions for a scientific report (lab report), a common form of scientific paper in which original data are presented, can be seen by clicking here General Style:
    • use correct grammar and a style appropriate for formal writing, without colloquial phrases (slang) or contractions (don't say don't.) use a clear, straightforward style say what you mean plainly without being cute, grandiose, meaninglessly catchy, or unnecessarily dramatic. (e.g. avoid things like "the antelope hopping up and down like jack-in-the-boxes" or "this paper is of earthshaking importance if we are to comprehend the disaster overshadowing the red-cockaded woodpecker" or "the authors set off fearlessly to the wilds of Kenya" or "have you ever wondered about the amazing colors found in birds?") be concise (do not use a whole lot of extra words like these that do not do a great deal to add to the meaning of any particular sentence but rather detract from the general overall clarity of the paper in question).
