Writing for Children's Magazines
by Donna Freedman
(Revised and expanded version of an aricle orginally published in Children's Writer , a publication of the Institute for Children's Literature) Not everyone can write for kids, but everyone should want to: Children's magazines can be a lucrative market. I've been paid as much as $1,000 for a 350-word article. You don't have to have children, or even like them, to do this kind of writing - a childless, kid-hating friend of mine earned $1,100 on just two articles for juvenile magazines. And there are hundreds of freelance opportunities out there, from Sunday-school papers to glitzy, high-tech skateboard 'zines. The market has grown noticeably in recent years. In 1985, the Institute for Children's Literature identified 354 freelance markets. More recently, ICL listed nearly 600 such markets. Writing for kids isn't easy, of course. You have a tiny space in which to pack as much information as you can. You have to write in language they can understand. And you need fabulous ideas that will grab the attention of youngsters who are increasingly distracted by CD-ROM, cable television, and other competing media.
Non-fiction: Where the Action Is
Although many writers want to create enduring children's fiction, they're a lot more likely to sell a non-fiction piece. Juvenile magazines do publish a fair amount of short stories, but they're generally outnumbered by articles and activities. And an increasing number of magazines focus on non-fiction topics like science, nature and technology. "Where the sales are, where the interest is, is non-fiction," says Susan Tierney, editor of the industry newsletter

How To Approach Magazine Markets by Xlibris It may seem a little obvious, but it doesn't hurt to be reminded of the essentials of freelancing for magazines. Even if you're enjoying a "quiet" freelance career and you're not counting on supporting yourself with your writing, it's a good idea to approach publications — even the small ones — with a measure of professionalism. OK, first you need to get the writer's guidelines. But let's be honest. How many of us have sat down with the annual Writer's Market bible, perused each page, targeted publications, and hastily sent off the article we just know is right for them? I certainly don't do it now, but I did once. Maybe you have, too. Obtain submission guidelines Guidelines serve several purposes:
  • They give a writer specifics about what types of submissions the publication is interested in, be it fiction, autobiography, nonfiction, poetry or whatever. They dictate word count (a small publication with few pages probably wouldn't appreciate a 5,000 word article).

    By Melanie Bowden

You know the old saying: "Write what you know." If you're a parent, where better to start than writing for parenting magazines? After first spending close to a year pitching ideas, I've now been published more than 30 times in parenting magazines around the country in the last year. I've learned what works and what doesn't.
To make your trip to parenting magazine publication (and payment!) a shorter one than mine, here are some shortcuts:
    1. If you want to break into your local parenting regional, propose an idea that is specific to your area, seasonal, and that staff writers are probably sick to death of being assigned every year. My first published article was called "Summer Fun on a Budget," and contained a detailed list of information on 17 free places to go with kids in my area. Possibilities of selling as a reprint to other parenting regionals: zilch. The article was also a pain in the butt to write, but it got me in the door. Insider Tip: Providing pictures with the article helped. The photos were nothing fancy - just 35mm prints from my everyday camera.
    2. As soon as you've got some publishing credits to your name, start thinking nationally, not locally. You can still pitch ideas to your local magazine, but concentrate your queries on articles that will resell outside your area. In almost every part of the country you can find a parenting regional like
