Full text of a recent article about Smith, subtitled Idealism and Morality in the Instrumentality of Mankind.
http://www.raingod.com/angus/Writing/Essays/Literary/Smith.html
Cats, cruelty and children
Idealism and morality in the Instrumentality of Mankind "The Lords of the Instrumentality who are here on Fomalhaut III. There is the Lord Femtiosex, who is just and without pity ... There is the Lady Goroke ... who has shown kindnesses to underpeople, as long as the kindnesses were lawful ones. And there is the Lady Arabella Underwood, whose justice no man can understand." "The Dead Lady of Clown Town" Cordwainer Smith The science-fiction writings of Cordwainer Smith consist of some twenty-odd short stories and two novels, which chart the history of an evolving civilisation over some fifteen thousand years. The history is internally consistent, and each story contributes to a coherent picture of the technological, social and spiritual development of the future described. In real life, Smith was Dr Paul Linebarger, Professor in Asiatic Studies at Johns Hopkins university and colonel in US military intelligence, accomplished linguist and foreign policy adviser to the state department. His writing style, partly inspired by Chinese narrative techniques, more closely resembles poetry than the conventional dry prose of science-fiction, and his stories are dense with literary and historical references and more or less complex linguistic puns. Running through the entire work is a consistent morality and outlook, whose principal themes recur again and again in stories often written many years apart. The broad outlines of Smith's future civilisation can be briefly sketched. Travel between the stars and the consequent expansion of human culture through the universe is made possible by the invention of 'planoforming' ships that travel faster than light, and by the development of novel systems to protect their passengers and crew against the dangers of space. In this new interstellar culture, true humans live lives of privileged ease, while work is done by robots and by 'underpeople', animals genetically modified to have near-human intelligence and form. Over it all presides the Instrumentality, a benign but absolute dictatorship composed of a ruling nobility who use their technological and telepathic powers to maintain the status quo and to dispense an abstract and dispassionate justice. It is against this background that the principal themes of Smith's stories - love, courage, cruelty, hope, innocence, belief - are played out.

WFNS Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia
Writing by Children and Youths
Few places publish writing by children and youth. Manuscripts can be sent to magazines which publish writing by adults, but it's the rare child who can compete with professional writers for the limited space on those pages. Some magazines intended for an audience of children also publish short pieces by children - these include the Owl Family publications ( Owl Chickadee Chirp Hibou Coulicou L'Orsa Kwil Kids and Kidsworld Magazine . Other magazines, like Reluctant Hero and The Claremont Review , are run by an editorial staff under 21 with an adult supervisor - and all content is created by children and youths. Our periodicals listing links to these magazines. Some of these publishers may require a query prior to submission. A query is simply a letter outlining your experience and your ideas for your work, and should be submitted along with a sample of your writing. This gives the publisher a chance to review your ideas before you have to send in your full manuscript. However, most children's publishers do accept unsolicited manuscripts. Check their website's submission guidelines. Manuscripts should be double spaced, type written, single sided, and unbound on 8.5 x 11 paper. Always include a cover letter giving information about yourself (especially your age) and your experience as a writer. Be sure to include your address and telephone number so that you can be contacted if your work is selected for publication. As well, include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) large enough and with enough postage to allow the return of your manuscript. Never send your only copy.

Writing About Children's Literature:
Wind in the Willows
Note: this is not an assignment; it's just some tips on how to write about literature. I realize that this will be review for most of you, but it's always nice to have a refresher.
The first, and many feel most difficult, task is to find something to write about. You are writing an analysis, not merely a plot summary or a description of characters. That means you need to look at some significant idea or issue or theme or technique (I'd not recommend looking at technical elements of style unless you've got some solid background in analyzing fiction) of the work. You will need to develop a thesis, which means you will need some point to argue and support. A thesis USUALLY is developed as an answer to a series of questions you ask about the work (in this case, the book). After reading Wind in the Willows you might wonder:
  • Although Disney focuses primarily on the adventures of Mr. Toad, Grahame looks mainly at Mole; which one is the main character and why?
  • Why is the story called Wind in the Willows (originally Wind in the Reeds) and not The Adventures of Mr. Toad or The Adventures of Mr. Mole or both?

Review by Betty Winslow The ABCs of Writing for Children

    Compiled by Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff
    Quill Driver Books
    November 2002
    258 pgs.
Writing-related Although the title of this book implies a linear, nuts-and-bolts approach to the subject of writing for children, in reality it's almost a stream of consciousness on the subject, collected by Koehler-Pentacoff from the minds of 114 authors and illustrators and loosely arranged into 46 chapters with titles like "First Times," "What Is the Best Writing Advice You Ever Received?," "Rejection," and "Picture Books." Each chapter is full of highly personal stories, tips, and anecdotes, which are fun to read (although the way some are repeated in several places had a slightly disconcerting "deja vu" effect on me: wait, haven't I read this already?). Although I found the book's arrangement a bit hard to navigate and the introductory italicized titles for each small anecdote seemed to me unnecessary and often confusing, I knew I would enjoy reading what Koehler-Pentacoff had to offer, since I love children's books and I find the people who write and illustrate them interesting. Reading what Jane Yolen, Doug Cushman, Patricia McKissack, Ruth Heller, David Adler, and R. L. Stine (among others) had to say about writing children's books, inspiration, rejection, censorship, book signings, and a host of other topics was bound to be good! It was, too, and I also picked up some practical tips on writing, learned more about the stories behind the stories kids love, and discovered a bit about what makes these people tick.
