Writing For An Audience
Using an Aviator`s Vocabulary
The purpose of this assignment is write an entertaining children`s story book that will teach children from kindergarten or grade one the meaning of ten words used when talking about planes and aviation. Each page of your book should have an illustration and one or two sentences of text. One vocabulary word should be included on each page.
Before you begin, familiarize yourself with some vocabulary words associated with aviation by reading over the glossary provided by the National Museum of Aviation. Test your knowledge by completing a crossword puzzle using the vocabulary from the glossary. If you have access to the internet you can also try an online quiz on the parts of an airplane.
These are the criteria for writing your children`s book:
1. The book must have a colourful and eye-catching cover.
2. The title should name a main character with whom the readers can identify ( e.g. a child their age or slightly older.)
3. Use personification. Give an airplane in the story a personality and feelings as if it was a human being. Often alliteration (the repetition of initial sounds in words) is used in naming characters (

Frequently Asked Questions File
Many of the questions I get by email touch on areas outside those covered by the articles I have archived at my site. Where I can, I revise the articles to incorporate additional information. These questions either fall outside the topics covered there or are so basic that they need to be covered again. I hope you will find this FAQ file useful. Questions about me: I have a manuscript that I want to have published. Can I send it to you?
Please don't. This is my personal WWW site, not the site of a publisher. I do work as an editorial consultant, and will do manuscript evalutations as part of that work (for a fee). You can find information about this elsewhere on my site. Please do not send a manuscript to me by email unless I specifically request that you do. So do you edit or critique manuscripts for writers?

Heather Mac Donald email article respond to article print article F eeling dispirited about today's youth? Try attending a Boy Scout meeting. You will find a parallel universe to today's vulgar, sexualized youth culture, filled with gestures of sometimes unbelievable delicacy and a code of conduct as anachronistic as sixteenth-century courtiership. Take Harlem's Troop 759. Six boys, from tall to small, sit expectantly around a card table in the basement of a red brick church on Morningside Avenue. The gangly senior patrol leader, Osmond Ollennu, a tenth-grade son of Ghanaians, calls the troop to opening ceremonies ("C'mon, men, form a straight line!"), and Osmond's little brother leads it in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by four full-throated repetitions of the scout motto ("Be Prepared!") and one scout slogan ("Do a Good Turn Daily"). Then Osmond, who is the troop's second-in-command, announces inspection. While the boys stand quietly in line, he gently reties a neckerchief here, straightens a collar there, occasionally whispering a reminder in a boy's ear. The troop's leader, a dignified 18-year-old named Henry Lawson, inspects Ollennu in turn.

1) Writing Traditional Stories from a Different Point of View Read " The True Story of the Three Little Pigs " (by Jon Scieszka) with the children. This tells the "Three Little Pigs" story from the wolf's point of view. Ask the children to think of a story that they know well, and to write another version from another point of view. e.g. Write "Cinderella" from the PoV of one of the ugly sisters, OR Write "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" from the PoV of the troll, OR Write "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" from the PoV of Goldilocks. 2) Design a New Room for the Chocolate Factory Based on " Charlie and the Chocolate Factory " by Roald Dahl. Remind the children of the story and read chapter 15 - a description of the Chocolate Room.
