July 6, 2000 By Heather Mac Donald The Supreme Court ruled last week that the government can’t force openly gay scoutmasters on the Boy Scouts in violation of the Scouts’ moral code. But the battle is hardly over. Expect gayrights activists to intensify the pressure on corporations, United Ways and other voluntary organizations to withhold the tens of millions of dollars they annually contribute to scouting, and to sue public entities that sponsor the Scouts for discriminating against homosexuals. The victims of this campaign will be poor, minority children. That’s because charitable dollars donated to the Scouts go mostly to the inner city. Suburban Scout troops are selfsupporting; they raise their expenses through Christmas tree sales, bake sales and other means. Suburban parents can afford to buy their sons Scout uniforms, equipment and camp tuition. Innercity families have a harder time. When Fran Harty, a scoutmaster in the mostly white southern end of Staten Island, N.Y., takes his troop camping in Delaware, 10 fathers show up in cars. Scouts in Harlem take the bus. Corporate donations defray part of the costs of uniforms and camp fees, though in keeping with the Scout ethic of selfreliance and thrift, nothing is given away. “We ask them to earn their way to camp,” explains Jim Wilson, executive director of Atlanta’s Operation First Class, a program targeted at inner-city boys. Scouts have to show mastery of the Scout Oath and Law, or make progress towards Tenderfoot rank, before they are given handbooks or help with uniforms.

Help Your Child Learn to Write Well
April 1993 American children must be ready to learn from the first day of school. And of course, preparing children for school is a historic responsibility of parents. Should you help your child with writing? Yes, if you want your child to:
    • Do well in school
    • Enjoy self-expression
    • Become more self-reliant
You know how important writing will be to your child's life. It will be important from first-grade through college and throughout adulthood. Writing is:
    Practical.
Most of us make lists, jot down reminders, and write notes and instructions at least occasionally.
    Job-Related.
Professional and white-collar workers write frequentlypreparing memos, letters, briefing papers, sales reports, articles, research reports, proposals, and the like. Most workers do "some" writing on the job.
    Stimulating.
Writing helps to provoke thoughts and to organize them logically and concisely.
    Social.

    America's Children Need YOUR Help!
    • If you are a teacher or parent, children need your guidance in teaching themselves to read and write English as naturally as speaking. If you work for Federal, state, or local governments, children need you to support universal literacy by adopting a phonemic American writing system, AKSES If you train teachers, children need you to provide leadership in adopting a transparent writing system based upon phonemes. Finally, if you are NONE OF THE ABOVE, your help is especially important . Learn and adopt a few minor adjustments in orthography to make AKSES our standard written English.

The following could happen next year in America, if we want it badly enough:
Children are taught written English based on 44 standard American phonemes represented by one symbol for each instead of the 251 spellings commonly used in traditional orthography. This teaching takes place in homes and schools as political leaders and organizations adopt legislation to legalize the AKSES system, encourage its use, and adopt it for their own operations. Linguistics and literary experts play a crucial role because they put aside traditional rivalries and petty arguments to educate political and educational organizations. They advocate

SOME PRACTICAL ADVICE ON WRITING AND PUBLISHING FOR YOUNG WRITERS Secondly, read as much as you can. Learn from the storytellers who have come before you. Notice how they have practiced their craft. A writer is like a carpenter. We have a toolbox which includes vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, tense, point of view, etc.. All of these are just tools in our toolbox. The more you read the more tools you will acquire to "build the building" of your story. So keep on reading. Do not expect to be published by a major publishing company or magazine right away. Again, if you are interested in playing baseball for the New York Mets, you will not expect to walk on the field as their first baseman while you are in the sixth grade or even in highschool. The same thing applies to writing. Concentrate on the writing first. Worry about the publishing later. If you want other people besides your friends and your family to read your work, you can try some of these ideas:
    • If your school has a newspaper or a literary journal, try sending them some of your work. If they don't have one, maybe you could talk to the school librarian or your teacher about starting one.

by Vera Rosenberry The first book I wrote, Noelle of the Nutcracker , illustrated by Jan Brett, is about a little girl who loves to dance and an ambitious ballerina doll who wants to star in the Nutcracker ballet. After I wrote Noelle, children began asking me if I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. Look at this picture of me dressed up for in my third-grade ballet recital. Do I look like someone who is excited about dancing? If you said NO you are right! I was a terrible ballerina. I have a big toe that won't bend and I can't do the splits. But I had a wonderful time writing about a little girl who loves to dance. That is one of the special things about writing. You can use your imagination to step into the lives and hearts of other people. Noelle of the Nutcracker
