Samples of Stories I've Written for Children
In 1996, I took a writing course through the Institute of Children's Literature. I am placing exerpts from the beginnings of two unpublished stories that I wrote for younger children here. Both stories were inspired by my own childhood experiences. I hope to have them published as short stories for a children's magazine or a children's book. I would also like to do the illustrations for the stories.

Return to Publishing FAQs Learning About Children’s Trade Book Publishing Four to five thousand children's books—from picture books to young adult novels—are published in the U.S. each year. There are small publishing houses as well as large firms and conglomerates. There are many special interest publishers as well as houses with general publishing programs. A majority of larger, general trade book publishers are based in New York City, although there are many small and large houses in other parts of the country. Book publishing programs vary. While hardcover publishers originate books of every description, many lists reflect particular interests. For example, one list may reflect a publisher's emphasis on pre-school books; another may include a preponderance of books aimed at the middle grades and young adults; another, books that have originated abroad; and another may concentrate on nonfiction books on contemporary subjects. Paperback publishers originate titles on their own and purchase publication rights from hardcover publishers. Many original paperbacks appear in a series format and are originated by a book producer, sometimes called a packager, rather than by the publisher. Some hardcover publishers also publish paperback editions of titles from their own list, either at the same time the original hardcover publication appears, or after it.

Return to Perspetives Choosing Award-winning Nonfiction Writing for Children: Three Perspectives “Imagination, invention, selection, language, form—these are just as important to the making of a good book of biography, history, or science as to the making of a piece of fiction,” wrote Milton Meltzer in 1976. At the time that Meltzer’s article, “Where Do All the Prizes Go? The Case for Nonfiction,” appeared in the February 1976 issue of The Horn Book Magazine From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children’s Books (HarperCollins), author Kathleen T. Horning states: “Whatever their motivation for reading nonfiction, children deserve to have books of information that are accurate, engaging, and well written.” Nonfiction awards help to identify the best of those “accurate, engaging, and well written” works of nonfiction for children. Here is a glimpse at how those award winners are chosen. * There are several awards now given for nonfiction writing for children. For further information about these and other nonfiction awards, the Council suggested asking your school or local children’s librarian. Additional information can also be found on the Internet. Chair , 2002 Award Committee TheWashington Post -Children’s Book Guild Award for Nonfiction is granted each year to an “author or author/illustrator whose total body of work has contributed significantly to the quality of nonfiction for children.” The Children’s Book Guild is a sixty-five-year-old organization of authors and illustrators of at least two published works and a selection of members from the community of librarians and children’s literature specialists of Washington, D. C. The Guild presented its first award to David Macaulay in 1977. In 1982

    http://www.writers.ns.ca/w4c.html
WFNS Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia
    Writing for Children
If you are interested in writing for children, the first thing to do is read lots of children's books, and not just what you read as a child, but contemporary books hot off the presses, too. Become familiar with which publishing houses are producing what genres, so that when you send off a manuscript, you can be sure that you've given it to somebody with experience and interest in the type of work you do.
    Do you need an illustrator?
No. Publishers like to choose an illustrator themselves and they also don't like to reject a good manuscript because they don't like the illustrations, or vice versa. Send your manuscript, and if it is accepted, the editor will choose an illustrator whose style she thinks will suit your work.
How do you submit your book manuscript?
No matter what type of manuscript you're submitting, always make sure it is clear, error-free, double-spaced, and on white paper. Leave a one and a half inch margin on the left and one inch margin on the right. The top and bottom margins should be one and a half inches. Use 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Never send your only copy. Computer printouts are okay as long as they are separated into individual pages, on good quality paper, with dark, letter quality print (either laser or high-quality inkjet). Secure your manuscript with a paperclip, not a staple, and number the pages. Always remember to include a self-addressed stamped envelope, or sufficient postage to return your work.

    http://enhancinged.wgbh.org/kids/formats/web/kids.html
    Writing for Children's Web Sites
Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing content for children's Web sites:
    • Keep sentences short, and limit each sentence to one thought. Paragraphs should also be short and limited to one concept or idea. Verify that the text is written to the site's target age group. If you use a difficult word, explain what it means in the text or include it in such a way that the reader will understand its meaning by the context. Avoid scrolling pages. Younger kids, especially those under 7, have a difficult time keeping their places on the screen as they scroll. Keep columns narrow. It is easier for a child to read text if there aren't too many words on a line. For the youngest readers, about five words per line is recommended. Connect images to the text as much as possible. For example, by adding images such as arrows to on-screen selections, you'll make it clear to your young audience what those selections do. Use larger type sizes for sites designed for beginning readers. Readers often scan text on a Web page, so it can be helpful to highlight keywords within the text.
