W riting is a solitary occupation. Yet most of us are social beings in need of affirmation and moral support. This is why many writers find it helpful to belong to discussion groups, critique groups, bulletin boards, and listservs that include others who share their writing interests. My real and virtual writing communities offer me circles of friends and colleagues with whom I can share the elation of contracts, publications, and other good writing news, as well as the disappointments that sometimes rear their ugly heads. I can ask questions, gain information, and yes, share gripes. And I can find out what's going on in the children's writing world. Books to watch for in 2004 , from writers and illustrators in real and virtual writing communities I'm proud to claim as mine Frequently Asked Questions about writing for the children's market Who's in your writing community?

WRITING FOR CHILDREN- TITLES:
Keep your titles short and snappy.
I have learned this one the hard way! People seem to have great difficulty remembering my longer titles, but no problem remembering the shorter ones. A good general rule is to keep your titles from one to three words, no more than five.
Catchy sounds- In creating your titles, try playing with poetic devises like alliteration and rhyme. Of my own book titles, I think my favorite is MONSTER MANNERS because the alliteration makes it fun to say. Use verbs- Another way to make a title lively is to use an active verb in it. I did that with FOLLOW ME! Reflect the theme - a good title, however short and catchy, gives us a hint of what the story is about. Hook your reader - The title is your first chance to grab the attention of a reader- or of an editor.

The Art of Writing for Children
If you are interested in writing and/or illustrating children's books for publication, you will need to study various aspects of the industry prior to seeking publication. You must learn what makes a manuscript publishable, how to find the right publisher for your book and how to submit your manuscript to the selected publisher(s).
You will not be able to write a story, print it, then send it to the first publisher you find and expect to be published. There are many beginners out there who think this is how to get published. You will be well ahead in the game if you do a bit of reading first.
You should be able to put together your own "course" about writing for children by selecting books from the different areas of the craft. If learn by reading

Writing for Children's Magazines
by Donna Freedman
(Revised and expanded version of an aricle orginally published in Children's Writer , a publication of the Institute for Children's Literature) Not everyone can write for kids, but everyone should want to: Children's magazines can be a lucrative market. I've been paid as much as $1,000 for a 350-word article. You don't have to have children, or even like them, to do this kind of writing - a childless, kid-hating friend of mine earned $1,100 on just two articles for juvenile magazines. And there are hundreds of freelance opportunities out there, from Sunday-school papers to glitzy, high-tech skateboard 'zines. The market has grown noticeably in recent years. In 1985, the Institute for Children's Literature identified 354 freelance markets. More recently, ICL listed nearly 600 such markets. Writing for kids isn't easy, of course. You have a tiny space in which to pack as much information as you can. You have to write in language they can understand. And you need fabulous ideas that will grab the attention of youngsters who are increasingly distracted by CD-ROM, cable television, and other competing media.
Non-fiction: Where the Action Is
Although many writers want to create enduring children's fiction, they're a lot more likely to sell a non-fiction piece. Juvenile magazines do publish a fair amount of short stories, but they're generally outnumbered by articles and activities. And an increasing number of magazines focus on non-fiction topics like science, nature and technology. "Where the sales are, where the interest is, is non-fiction," says Susan Tierney, editor of the industry newsletter

Writing Books for Children and Teenagers
Brain Food Reading and Writing Living and Writing Journaling ... Reading List Thinking about writing for children? Here are the easy answers:
(1) yes, it's as hard as writing for adults; (2) no, the market is not good and hasn't been since the 80s (in fact, it's worse in the 00's than it was when I got started seven years ago); (3) no, you probably won't make a lot of money, even if you do sell a book; (4) no, selling a first book is no guarantee of a second just like selling a second is no guarantee of selling a third and so on. (5) no, I wouldn't want to do anything else. Still with me? Good. Now, we can talk. This is more of a collection of thoughts than an essay, and I'll add to it now and then. 06/20/02 Update A stunning thing has happened. Since I first put together these pages in 1997, I have become not-a-beginner. I'm now working on my fourth book. My first one has been released, my second is slated for this spring, and my third is in production. Much of the credit for this goes to my editor, agent, critique buddies, supportive friends, supportive family members and, in particular
