As I read Donald Leu's previous column, I found myself wondering about the many possible uses for the Internet in the classroom and the emerging forms of literacy brought about by its many dynamic virtual environments. I thought about the many new possibilities for communication that were mentioned and noticed that many of these new communication forms (e.g., chat sessions, e-mail) involved writing. I reflected back on Leu's statements about "standing on the cusp" between traditional and new forms of literacy and realized that today's students would use written communication for purposes both traditional (e.g., letters) and new (e.g., listservs). This realization impressed upon me the need for developing writing-centered literacy experiences that help students develop traditional and electronic literacy skills. The more I thought about it, the more I considered the practical concerns of using virtual environments like the World Wide Web (WWW) to facilitate the teaching of traditional literacy and new forms of electronic literacy. Although the wealth of information on the WWW provides great potential for incorporating rich information resources into writing-centered literacy activities, the sheer enormity of the WWW's seemingly limitless boundaries makes locating appropriate information quite time consuming. In addition, once individual sites are chosen, they must be carefully analyzed to make sure that information contained within is conducive to instructional goals and students' level of language use.

Encourage Student Writing Publish on the Web!
Publishing student writing encourages the reluctant writer, strengthens kids' self-confidence, rewards interest, and promotes a positive attitude toward literature. If your school is like most, however, you lack an easy and effective way of publishing your students' work. Now, help is as close as a mouse click away! Today, Education World writer Glori Chaika explores opportunities to publish student writing and teacher writing on the Web. What do an Olympic competitor and a successful writer have in common? Practice! Lots and lots of practice. Both people need to learn skills and master a form. Talent is important, but practice creates the solid base that allows that talent to soar.

plagiarism Purdue students will want to make sure that they are familiar with Purdue's official academic dishonesty policy as well as any additional policies that their instructor has implemented. Another good resource for understanding plagiarism is the WPA Statement on Plagiarism.

The Contradictions of American Academic Writing
Show you have done your research -But- Write something new and original Appeal to experts and authorities -But- Improve upon, or disagree with experts and authorities Improve your English by mimicking what you hear and read -But- Use your own words, your own voice Give credit where credit is due -But- Make your own significant contribution
Since teachers and administrators may not distinguish between deliberate and accidental plagiarism, the heart of avoiding plagiarism is to make sure you give credit where it is due. This may be credit for something somebody said, wrote, emailed, drew, or implied.

    1. Know Your Product
This is the cornerstone of good copy writing. Know your product and be passionate about it. Believe in it. If you don't, you shouldn't be selling it. It is not only unethical to sell something you wouldn't buy yourself, but also difficult and unpleasant. If you have a product that you *know* will change your customer's life for the better, then copy writing becomes much easier. You're doing her a favor - offering this product at this price - believe that yourself first. After that, killer copy comes naturally. 2. Know Your Customer Before you write the first word, create a profile customer. Is it a techno-peasant housewife or an IT company executive?
    Income range?
    Age?
    Sex?

By using normal PHP, we can eliminate the overhead many of the other template engines out there get by using their own template languages and parsers.

Story by Gil High SPC Carrie Fotovich understands rejection. An Army journalist currently assigned to U.S. Army Forces Command's 14th Public Affairs Detachment, Fotovich has submitted countless articles to Soldiers and she admits to becoming frustrated as the only reward for her efforts turned out to be a pile of rejection letters from the editors. But as she developed her writing skills and learned the importance of graphic support for her articles, suddenly her material was being published and the editors were contacting her to request articles on specific subjects. "It was difficult initially," Fotovich said. "I really wanted my stories published in a widely-circulated publication. Now, I've learned what editors are looking for, and as a result I'm more often published. It's very rewarding to see my stories in a publication and know they're being read by soldiers and civilians throughout the Army." To improve her chances of being published, Fotovich also talks to editors to understand the publication's audience and how she can tailor her work to fit their needs.

That's certainly not a bad thing, seeing how every "punk" band that comes to the attention of kids these days have never heard a single note of theirs. Well, here's one band who has—and is putting it to use. 46 Short is a fresh example of that great, simple, up-tempo excitement that will, hopefully never die. With 14 tracks of straight-ahead punk rock and a hidden track (#46—go figure!) of some classic punk rock puking 'n' flushing, it's good to know the kiddies out there now have something cool to refer to. -Jasten King 69 CHARGER TRASH DELUXE!
