Meet the writers Stories Talk to the writers Teachers Page ... Ask the writers a question Meet the Writers Abdirazak Osman I am a citizen of Mogadishu, and having spent my childhood, schooldays and adulthood in that once great city I know each and every corner of it. The last time I saw Mogadishu was in 1987, and ever since then I have been a foreigner in some place or other.
My second hometown is Cairo, where I spent six great years of my life. Most of this time I spent teaching English at the International Living Language Institute (ILLI), where half the students were Somali. I started writing In the Name of our Fathers while still in Cairo, though I finished it in Denmark. The second important thing I did in Cairo was music, for it was there I learned to write lyrics, compose and even sing. On New Year’s Eve 1993 I released my debut album, which I first called Rendezvous and later Gabar. It was re-released in London, as Gabar, in the mid-nineties during a visit I made to London, and several thousand have been sold to Somalis throughout the world, my main markets being Egypt, England and Canada. In writing, my first published work was a rather touching short story about the Somali civil war called ‘At Least there are still some good people left’, published in Hal-Abuur: Journal of Somali Literature and Culture based in London. My second work was an English Grammar in Somali, published in Denmark by my own publishing house, Banaadir Books, in 1995, which has sold well. My novel In the Name of our Fathers, published in 1997, is my third work.

Roving i: Nature writers meet in McCarthy
Field journals can preserve inspiration
by Susan Beeman
Sept. 3-9, 1998 / Vol. 7, Ed. 35
Our powers of observation heightened each day we hiked in the field, learning ... the botanical and geological history of the Kennicott and McCarthy Valleys.
"If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet herbs ... that is your success.” — Henry David Thoreau If you are like many people who live in the city, you probably don't think of your life in terms of sweet-smelling flowers, nor do you tend to greet dawn and dusk with great joy. More than likely, you'd say your life is OK, but you don't bound enthusiastically out of bed to go to work, nor do you sleep and dream at night with gusto. Thoreau said most of us lead lives of quiet desperation. I second that notion, but also know the solution to my own modern-day anxiety. Maybe it is also your solution. What do you think of when you hear the word nature ? Flowers and squirrels? Mountains and scenery? Wild oceans, burbling streams, and green meadows? Does it occur to you to add yourself to the list? Or do you feel disconnected from all that "out there," separate from other forms of life? Two weeks ago, at the Wrangell Mountains Nature Writing Workshop in McCarthy, a diverse group of nearly 20 writers discussed these and other questions, practiced field observation exercises and spent many hours each day scribbling and sketching in journals.

dated August 2, 1951: Indian writers meet in Moscow
Tass reported in London that a meeting between Indian and Soviet writers was held in Moscow on July 29. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, India's Ambassador to Russia was a distinguished guest. About 1,000 writers, students, and others attended the meeting in the Trade Union House. The leader of the Indian group, poet Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, said the best practitioners of Indian literature and art had helped the Indian nation and her people in the struggle to become free from foreign rule. He said ``now, the attention of progressive Indian writers and artists is focussed on the struggle for peace. We create plays, poems, songs, pictures, and sculptures calling on people everywhere to fight against war-mongers.'' Clenched Fist Society of Pakistan On August 1, in Lahore, was inaugurated what was to be known as the ``Clenched Fist Society'', in consequence of a public meeting addressed in July by Pakistan's Prime Minister, Liaqat Ali Khan. The Prime Minister had said in Karachi that the symbol of Pakistan henceforth would be a clenched mailed fist. That announcement was welcomed by enthusiastic cries from the crowd for Pakistan to conduct `jehad' to conquer Kashmir along with India, and Palestine. PTI reported that the Lahore meeting had been attended by psychologists, scientists, philosophers, artists, authors, and others. Dr. Niaz Ahmed, Director, Institute of Chemical Technology, Punjab (Pakistan) University, who delivered the inaugural address of the C.F. Society, said that one of its principal objectives would be ``discussion of the technicalities, philosophy, and moral aspects, of the clenched fist.''

Writer's Groups
If you are looking for a group in your area and don't find one here, the two best places to ask are your local library and the closest college or university English department (or whatever language is appropriate). If you e-mail me asking about a group in an area I don't have listed, all I can do is ask you to check with the library and colleges in your area. I list all groups I know of. This page lists writers groups that meet face-to-face, by their location, anywhere in the world. Listings are free, as a service to the writers. If you have information about a group, please let me know their meeting location, time, any membership fees and area of interest. E-mail to Callie@writepage.com
(Note: Listing here isn't suitable for critique groups seeking to fill an empty space ... post a note in a library, bookstore, and local college for that.)
The Known Groups
The listing became too long and hard to read - pick your area and jump to the listings for that area. They aren't alphabetized, and those aren't my typing errors.
