Welcome to the EMILE GRIFFITH wing! CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR A LARGER VIEW! This section is dedicated to a SIX-TIME WORLD CHAMPION. A man who fought his way to the top of his game, meeting all challengers and contenders en route to becoming one of boxings' elite; a TRUE multi-champion. New York City's adopted son honed his craft at St. Nicks Arena and became a fixture at Madison Square Garden fighting more main events in the Garden than any other headliner in history. Turning pro in 1958, he went on to simultaneously hold both the World Welterweight and Middleweight crown in 1966. Unknown to most, Emile Alphonse Griffith holds one of boxings' unbreakable records. He has fought more title fight rounds (339) than any other world champion in history. This includes all-time greats Abe Attell (337), Sugar Ray Robinson (288) and Muhammad Ali (270). The bible of boxing magazines "The RING" (no affiliation with this website) has included Emile Griffith in their pages many times throughout his career and he still makes appearances from time to time. But his first "guestshot" in this prestigious periodical occurred in the August 1958 issue. Hidden away on page 32 in "Seen & Heard in N.Y." is the following line referring to his pro debut at St. Nicholas Arena on June 2, 1958; "The 1958 National Golden Gloves welterweight champion, Emile Griffith, 157, West Side, celebrated his professional debut by out-pointing Joe Parham, 162, Paterson N.J. in the opening four."

TURNING POINT
A ntiwar sentiment is on the rise, but is the antiwar movement? A steadily increasing number of Americans oppose invading Iraq, and a full two-thirds want to see a " smoking gun " before we set a course for empire. Around the world, opposition is overwhelming, not only in the Middle East (except Israel), but throughout Europe. The United Kingdom is especially boiling over with rage at Blair, not only from the Labor left but also from the "Britain first" right . The image of Tony Blair frantically wagging his tail and begging for a bone from Washington is universally unappealing. A number of demonstrations are planned over the next two months, and, here in America, where the majority oppose a unilateral attack , it seems as if a day hardly goes by without the announcement of a new coalition of antiwar groups, one more "mainstream" than the last.

Be nice to your computer, cause someday they'll take over the world. Main September 26, 2002 Fear and Loathing on the content management trail San Francisco ’02 Chapter 1 Some time before touchdown the drugs loosened their hold. I remember turning to my Scottish and unnervingly unpredictable attorney and saying, “I feel awfully light headed I think you should drive.” I got up and walked down the aisle as it lurched sickeningly away from me. These intercontinental flights are brutal things and not easily understood. I stumbled and kicked my way through the loose limbs to get to the toilets at the back of the cabin. Christ, I’m glad we sat near the back, the chances of us going down are so high that any factor, like being at the back of the plane, are going to weigh heavily in our favour. I looked back across the seething rows of seats at my attorney. She was quiet now. She had been mumbling to herself earlier and raving about the French and worm farms. Incoherent babbling and screeching like a tape machine played backwards. Strange words I don’t even pretend to understand. I made it to the end of the very back of the plane, legs rubbery, walking bow legged, staring straight ahead, fixed on my destination. Suddenly these harpies leapt out of the galley. Crazed leery creatures, drunk on cheap booze and stinking of it. They pounced, sensing an easy victory, cornering me and trying to chat me up. They were from San Jose and on the prowl. I smiled and nodded and tried to stay upright. It’s never good to show fear in these situations. Any slip and I could be torn to pieces. I know this from experience; I once saw a man ripped to shreds by women just like this, a huge pack of blond, bubble-gum jeaned freaks. There may have only been two of them now, but I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in a wheel chair.

Rob Schultz: Harris lottery material ... if heart truly set on NBA
May 6, 2004 Email this story to a friend Printer-friendly format Email this writer Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan (right) answers questions Wednesday during a news conference where junior guard Devin Harris (left) announced he will enter the NBA draft but won't hire an agent, giving him the option of returning to the UW (Mike DeVries photo). Many draft-worthy basketball players are beaming from ear-to-ear when they announce they are either leaving college or not attending college at all to chase their dream and head for the pros. And then there was Harris, who looked like he was talking about an Army draft rather than the one conducted by the NBA that makes a few young men instant millionaires each year. His voice and body language were also different. They lacked the confidence and conviction that were such key parts of his makeup this season and helped him dominate the Big Ten Conference, where he was its player of the year.

Suzanne Lenglen and the First Pro Tour
Ray Bowers It was late summer 1926. International tennis was thriving, contributing its flair and substance to what would become known as the Golden Age of Sport. At the pinnacle of world tennis were the three great national championshipsWimbledon, the U.S. Nationals at Forest Hills, and the French championships on clay, which had been opened to non-French players in 1925 and were already recognized as a premier event. Meanwhile the annual Davis Cup competition equalled, perhaps surpassed, these events in general interest worldwide, while British and American women competed annually for the Wightman Cup. Two superstars ruled over the times. At the top of the world rankings in every year 1920-1925 had been the American William Tilden, who led the U.S. to annual Davis Cup triumphs throughout the period. Meanwhile, the French champion Suzanne Lenglen captured six Wimbledons starting in 1919. The only woman of comparable ability was the American champion Helen Wills, six years younger, who lost to Lenglen narrowly in their classic lone meeting, in the final at Cannes in 1926.

The Books that Made the Writers
A reading list from the people who know reading Summer 2003 Great writers are great readers. Writers spend endless hours studying the books of predecessors and contemporaries to learn what worked and what didn't. In all this reading, some works stand out. We asked several alumni authors to tell us about one book that has passed the night-table test a book always by the bedside to be consulted over and over, a book that has made a difference in their writing lives. Here, then, is a summer reading list from the best with an introduction from Tom Wolfe, cultural critic extraordinaire, on what happens when writers read

The author J.R.R.Tolkien also had no idea (at the time) who he was, or what to make of his sudden unexpected appearance in the story. As readers, we can learn quite a bit from how Tolkien develops and explores this (and other) characters—both from the concrete details the readers are given and also from what we are not given. Nike Golf Rolls Out New TA2
    Press Release
On February 1, 2003, golfers will be able to experience the faster core and longer distance of Nike Golf's new TA2 golf ball - the ball that has created a stir across all of the major professional tours this winter with benefits that are driving an unprecedented 60 professional players or more to switch to the TA2 in 2003.
The TA2 (SRP: $40/dozen) is the result of more than three years of testing; feedback from hundreds of golfers after thousands of rounds played; scores of professional tour victories including seven Major Championships; and the magic of the most talented golf ball engineer in the golf industry.
Nike Golf introduced the world to the benefits of solid core technology in 2000 and led the shift away from the wound core ball with the ensuing Tour Accuracy line. Feedback from three years of Tour and amateur play combined with the consistent nature of the Tour Accuracy's solid core led to the creation of Nike Golf's proprietary Snap Velocity Core. This innovative blend of Neodymium-catalyzed Polybutadiene has resulted in the fastest core Nike Golf has ever introduced. It is the heart of the TA2 and what gives it the distance that tour level players demand.
