Golf Notes December 19 David Duval was the first to use Nike Golf clubs, and the swoosh stable is growing, with players such as Mark Brooks, Stewart Cink, Glen Day and John Cook. Can Tiger Woods be far behind? Woods said he has tried prototype Nike irons in the past couple of months and could see himself using them on the PGA Tour as early as 2002 ``if things go right.'' ``We're progressing,'' he said. ``We're heading in that direction.'' Woods has been with Titleist since he turned pro, although he continued to play the same Mizuno irons that brought him three straight U.S. Amateur titles until he felt the Titleist blades were suited for him. ``I designed the heads,'' he said. ``I designed them the way I wanted to have them.''

A turning point in the Civil War
Two of America's finest historians reconsider the battle of Gettysburg that saved the Union By Tom O'Brien July will bring the 140th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. Across Pennsylvania fields baking under the hot summer sun, reenactors will be out in force - most from the South, eager to replay, or imaginatively reverse, the whole encounter. Reenactments began in 1913, a time closer to the battle than to us. But Gettysburg is a place that history embalmed as a special shrine long ago. What new could there be to say about it? In the hands of two master historians, Stephen Sears and James McPherson, plenty, it turns out - though their books serve quite different purposes. McPherson's "Hallowed Ground" focuses on the battlefield today. Sears, whose "Gettysburg" will be published later this month, focuses on the battle, providing the best single-volume study in 30 years of what happened at Gettysburg from July 1 to 3, 1863. "Hallowed Ground" is part of a series by Crown in which famous writers guide readers across their favorite landscapes. McPherson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Battle Cry of Freedom," fulfills the task with a crisp but informative tour of key spots at the Gettysburg National Military Park. Using appropriate monuments as "stops," McPherson provides apt, moving commentary about personalities, controversies, and oddities connected with the battle. Among the last, he says, a body was found as late as 1997 with the skull shattered, just one of close to 8,000 fatal wounds suffered during the battle.

"I may come across as laid back but you need to keep well clear of me in the week before a fight, "he said. "I isolate myself at my mother's, watching tapes, playing computer games and running the fight through my head all the time. "Several people have commented on how well I speak in front of the cameras but, honestly, I don't like all the fuss. I just love to fight. If the public only saw me on fight night, I'd be very happy. "If I didn't fight in the ring, I'd probably do it in town somewhere. I never back down because I've always known I could handle myself if the time comes.

When Fans Go Pro Or: The perils of turning one's hobby into a job Even more difficult, however, is having to deal with your fellow fans who fault and criticize your actions at every turn. The Internet has made it possible for fans of a medium to congregate and openly talk about their favorite hobby, and fandom wouldn't be where it is today without the sense of community made possible by the newsgroups and web boards. But fans, anime or otherwise, are an attention-hungry lot. Some go out of their way to show to others just how important their opinions are. Others engage in an "I am the world" line of thought, and it's their way or the highway. And so the newsgroups and web boards are often filled with posts from people whose comments and arguments often belie their lack of understanding of basic business principles. As a result, the pro-taku finds himself in the unenviable position of having to defend the company he works for against comments that are more often than not misinformed. It's tempting to breach a confidentiality agreement just to prove a particular loudmouth on a web board wrong, but this often turns into a no-win situation. Sticking with your ethics means you have to choose your words carefully or clam up altogether, and watch helplessly as the rumor mill spins out of control. Supply the proof to counter a false argument, however, and the fan simply turns around and takes that info and posts it to a web site in an attempt to show off just how "in-the-know" he is.

    Mitzi Szereto's Erotic Fairy Tales
Review by Marcy Sheiner Erotic Fairy Tales by Mitzi Szereto and was returned to this charming universe.
Fairy tales, with their sexual subtexts and vivid physicality, have become a mother lode for writers of erotica. A few years ago Mike Ford put together an anthology of erotic fairy tales by women entitled Once Upon a Time . The anthology contains explicit pornography, no holds barred. Szereto's fairy tales differ somewhat, not only because all the stories are written by one author, but also because they're not quite so in-your-face. Which isn't to say they're not sexual: They're just not one-handed reading.
Fairy tales, with their sexual subtexts and vivid physicality, have become a mother lode for writers of erotica. Szereto prefaces each tale with an introduction explaining the sources of the original story and information about which versions contained sex, cannibalism, or other topics deemed unfit for children topics later left out of versions provided by those who popularized fairy tales, mainly the Brothers Grimm. It's enlightening to learn, for instance, that "Cinderella" comes to us via China, where the slipper is symbolic of the vagina. Or that the significance of the spindle in "Sleeping Beauty" derives from the fact that in primitive societies spinning was an act of female initiation—in some countries it was so important that women exposed themselves to the flax and asked it to grow as high as their genitals.

As evidenced by their pro debuts, Joe Ciccone and Cara Honeychurch can look forward to richly rewarding careers THEY HAlL FROM OPPOSITE ends of the planet, but Australia's Cara Honeychurch and New York's Joe Ciccone are practically joined at the hip when it comes to work ethic and the drive to succeed on the lanes. Both are tenacious students of the game; both took calculated risks to advance their careers; and both have a polish and self-awareness that belies their twenty-something ages. Now they have something else in common: They are BOWLING DIGEST'S choices for Men's and Women's 2000 Pro Rookies of the Year. Honeychurch, a 29-year-old from Melbourne, already had a best-of-show pedigree when she joined the PWBA. The Australian Junior Bowler of the Year in 1989 and 1990 bagged some of bowling's biggest international honors as an amateur, including the 1996 AMF Bowling World Cup title, three gold medals in the 1998 Commonwealth Games (an Olympics-affiliated sports festival that is equivalent to the Pan American Games), and induction into the International Bowling Hall of Fame. When she ran out et women's tournaments to win back home in Australia, Honeychurch looked to the earlier example set by players such as Dana Miller-Mackie and 1998 PWBA Player off the Year and sister Aussie Carol Gianotti-Block and knocked off Australia's top men in open events.

    Astrid Julian
L ike Candide, Astrid Julian was born in a bucolic Westphalian valley. Hopefully, that's where the similarity ends. A transatlantic ocean voyage transported her to the snows of Edmonton , Alberta. She began school in Red Deer (the place where the last surviving woman on Earth was spotted buying supplies in Racoona Sheldon's "The Screwfly Solution") and appeared on the front page of the Red Deer Advocate for colouring a picture of Sparky, the Fire Dog.
A fter being told by a well-meaning teacher that only heretics believe that man is descended from the apes, and after being told by a well-meaning father that heretics were burned at the stake for religious unorthodoxy, she began a brief flirtation with religion. Oops! Another similarity with Candide. Well, three weeks of coloring pictures at Sunday School later, an auto-da-fe would have been a nice change of pace. For a much more interesting story of religion in Alberta, check out William Perry Shunn's webpage.

Opinions contained herein will differ from those of the mainstream golf media USGA's Failure To Protect The Game “They’re hitting the ball too far.” “Courses are becoming obsolete”. “Will golf become little more than driver,. wedge, putt?”
Cries are coming from both players and writers alike that the incredible advances in the technology of golf equipment are changing the game. And it’s true. Driving distance is up dramatically. Players use shorter and shorter irons for approach shots. There is hardly any such thing as a true par-5 anymore. Exotic shafts, multi-layer balls, and space technology applied to golf are changing the game, quite possibly forever. The gulf between the professional and amateur game widens. Classic older golf courses are rendered obsolete. Soon there will probably be two sets of rules, two standards of equipment: one for amateurs, one for professionals, dividing one of the great distinctive of golf- one set of rules for all. Why is this occurring? Who is responsible for the change? And are these changes positive?

Student writers try to duck the censors by going online By Jeffrey Selingo
The New York Times June 7, 2001 The election at Centralia High School looked as if it would go off without a hitch, until possible irregularities with the campaign turned up on CNN. That's the Centralia Nerd Network, an underground Web newspaper at the high school, south of Olympia, Wash. The official student newspaper did not touch the issue of whether any candidates had missed deadlines for turning in texts for stump speeches and campaign spending receipts, but the five student staff members at CNN tracked down the details. "The school newspaper doesn't really write serious news stories," said Jonathan Stoffer, a senior who founded the Web site. "The Web site gives us a chance to writes stories about things that bug us in school."
