Technology: A Blessing for Writers and Editors?
by Gene Bodzin Computers have changed the way writers and editors work. But are we getting the most from the new tools? Writers and editors use technology both to publish electronic documents and to prepare electronic data storage media—diskettes or tapes—for printing equipment so that paper copies can be produced. Many traditional ways of treating old concerns are no longer the best ways, and a number of new issues have arisen for those involved in preparing texts for publication today.
Editing on Screen or on Paper?
Editors who are print-oriented usually feel comfortable marking up hard copy; other editors may prefer to use electronic text. The reasons for each practice are convincing. On the one hand, paper is safer—with it, nobody can lose an entire day's editing by hitting the wrong button or because a machine has crashed. Paper pages are more accessible—more of the text can be seen at once and pages can be scanned more easily. In addition, a paper trail satisfies the need for a record of editorial changes. On the other hand, editing on-line is faster, text can be moved more easily, and each new version is clean. A key argument for editing electronically is that since it typically takes as long to input editing changes as it does to make them on paper, taking both steps doubles the time required for copy-editing and increases costs.

Editing Resources on the Internet By Susan Jones Like many projects, this one started out innocently enough: a few requests for helpful sources for copy editors; inquiries here and there about web sites useful to writers; questions now and then about good sources for grammar tips. Before I knew it, the idea was hatched to create a list of such Internet resources. We thought that this list would be useful in BNA's in-house copy editing classes, as a link on the company's Intranet, or as a good handout in the library. There is an abundance of editing and writing help online. I divided my list into sections. For the most part, the listed web sites fall into the following categories: Editing/Style/Usage, Online Writing Labs, Grammar, Words and Miscellaneous. Editing / Style / Usage William F. Nature of the Work
Writers and editors communicate through the written word. Writers develop original fiction and nonfiction for books, magazines and trade journals, newspapers, technical reports, company newsletters, radio and television broadcasts, movies, and advertisements. Editors select and prepare material for publication or broadcasting and supervise writers. Technical writers put scientific and technical information into readily understandable language. They prepare operating and maintenance manuals, catalogs, parts lists, assembly instructions, sales promotion materials, and project proposals. They also plan and edit technical reports and oversee preparation of illustrations, photographs, diagrams, and charts. Copy writers write advertising copy for use by publication or broadcast media to promote the sale of goods and services.

English
The study of English opens doors to many careers. English majors develop highly valued skills in oral and written communication, and the ability to think creatively as well as analytically.
While English graduates have many opportunities for employment in fields that are "literary" in nature, they are by no means limited to these. This major is considered excellent preprofessional training for careers in law and administration. Law schools and MBA programs consistently place high value on the qualities developed in the English major: broad humane understanding as well as articulateness. These qualities are also highly valued in training for federal service, public policy, and health services, in addition to the better known options of teaching and library science.

Writing That Works covers business publication writing. It is a paid subscription newsletter. Many subscribers work in corporate and nonprofit organization offices, while some are freelance communicators. Subscribers include professional editors, writers, publication managers, communication directors, editorial staff, PR and marketing staff, and managers and executives who write as part of their job but who may not have extensive publication responsibility. WTW is not about the "business" of succeeding as a freelance writer, or about getting published. It is not about fiction writing. It is about practical business and organizational writing and related editing and publishing. 2. Here's the best approach
for Writing That Works articles.
  • Get right to the pointFAST. Avoid long warm-ups. On longer, 500 word articles use the DECK (the short blurb that follows the article main headline) to introduce and summarize the "meat" of the article. Subscribers should be able to get the gist of the article simply by reading the deck.
  • Use active voice. Use active verbs. Be BRIEF.
