Strategies for Overcoming Writer's Block What Causes It Writer's block is often caused by conflicted feelings. We want the writing to be perfect AND we want the damned thing done as soon as possible. We know what we know but we don't know what our readers know. We know how the memo should sound, but we don't have all the facts we need. We know everything about the software, but we don't know what an article should look like. We know what we have to say but we are afraid that it won't measure up to our expectations or to our readers'. All of these feelings are natural and normal. Everyone finds writing a challenge. Many writers, however, compound their problems by employing weak writing strategies. When these methods fail, they give up. Weak Strategies: I. Trial and error Since our short-term memory is limited, trying to juggle in your head all the possible ways to phrase something usually means we repeat the same rejected phrases over and over. One way to avoid this is to make a quick list of alternative phrases. 2.lnsisting on a perfect draft

LEO: Literacy Education Online Overcoming Writer's Block Even if they manage their time and follow writing guidelines, many writers will still experience a time when the words just won't come together, when they are simply "stuck" and can't think of anything to write. This is writer's block. Fortunately, a few helpful techniques make it possible to overcome the challenge of writer's block. Experiment Try to write in different places, at different times, and with different writing instruments. Freewrite - Choose one sentence in a paragraph and write a paragraph about it. Then choose one sentence from that paragraph and do it again. Cluster - Choose key words and ideas; then write associated ideas and words in clusters around them. This process often forms new ideas. Be flexible Be willing to throw out sections of text that are causing problems or just don't work. Follow a routine Follow a routine to get into the writing mood. Try activities like wearing comfortable clothing, using a certain pen, or listening to a particular CD or type of music. Move Physically move around, stretch, or walk.

Stalled Careers, Writer's Block, and Monsters Under the Bed
by Melisa Michaels
Hello, my name is Melisa and I'm a survivor of bad sales records.
There's a reason I've opened with a line that sounds as though it belongs in a twelve-step meeting. A twelve-step program wouldn't be a bad plan for writers whose careers have stalled out. It's something "nice people" don't talk about, but it can happen to any of us, anywhere, at any time. It can be life-threatening, it's something outsiders assume one could have prevented, and it responds well to therapy. Sharing horror stories would show us that we are not alone and that we are not to blame: sharing the trials and tribulations of our recovery would show us how to accept responsibility for the things we can control while relinquishing responsibility for the things we can't: and sharing our secret shame would show us that it is not, in fact, shameful. When my career crashed and burned, I didn't know any of that, and there was nobody to tell me. I was isolated as many writers are from any sort of peer group. It had been six or eight years since I had lived in the SF Bay Area and hung out with other writers, and I'd never heard of any of them failing once they got started. I had no idea it had ever happened to anybody else, and I certainly didn't know what to do about it. I was so stunned I hardly knew how to get my shoes on the right feet in the mornings. I felt like an impostor: seven published books and perhaps a dozen short stories notwithstanding, I wasn't really a writer after all: everybody knows that

UNC-CH Home Statement of Purpose When We Meet and What You Can Expect Upcoming Events ... Contact Us Thanks for visiting us at the Carolina Writer's Block. We are a UNC-CH student organization devoted to the student screenwriter. Statement of Purpose Our five goals are as follows:
  • To give input to others in need of advice, suggestions and constructive criticism. To get feedback from others. Writing must not happen in a vacuum. For those that want it, a receptive and supportive audience will help the creative process by acting as a sounding board. To ensure a sense of community through networking, members are encouraged to explore possibilities outside of convention and to assist one another in finding work after graduation from UNC-CH. To build and foster relationships that will last a lifetime. To facilitate and perpetuate the notion of the student screenwriter as an experimenter, as an artist and as the future of Hollywood.
  • Back to Top When We Meet and What You Can Expect Meetings will be held every Thursday evening when classes are in session at 8pm in Swain 1A (located on the corner of Columbia Street and Cameron Avenue). Meetings are now being held in conjunction with the Carolina Production Guild. This presents an opportunity for like minded people with interests in film, screenwriting, and other various aspects of production to discuss topics of interest.

Dealing with subjects as diverse as President Reagan's napping habits, cult footwear and the joys of bad cinema, Writer's Block is always outspoken, sometimes insightful and often (hopefully) funny. To mark 20 (or so) years of Writer's Block, a collection of the columns will be published soon by Murray The Cat Productions. Below are links to several columns from the collection. http://www.tedi.uq.edu.au/phdwriting/phfaq07.html
The phrase 'writer's block' covers a variety of situations. In our experience, absolute writer's block - that is, where someone literally can't write anything at all, not even a note to a friend or a shopping list, for example - is very rare. If this is the case, then possibly you need to work individually with someone like a counsellor or learning adviser. In such cases, committing yourself to write for only fifteen minutes a day is often a starting point. This must be faithfully observed and then extended only slowly.
However, 'writer's block' usually means something less extreme. The way to overcome it, is to look at what is causing it. It could be that:
    • considering the whole finished 300 page product paralyses you. Not only do you not write a thesis at one go, you seldom do that even with a chapter. Theses are written small section by small section. It is paradoxical in a way; you do need to keep in mind the whole thread of the argument, but at the same time you need to break down the whole thesis into smaller parts and know how they fit together. You then work on these smaller, identified parts. Often when you come across complex ideas and need to make them clear and linked to your argument, you should be working seriously just on a single paragraph.
    • working on specific small parts has fragmented the whole and, in a sense, you've lost the plot. This can manifest itself in trying to rearrange the pieces in several ways, cutting and pasting, and, although being very busy, never feeling satisfied with the result. It is important to stop being busy and spend time to recover the plot or story for your thesis and rebuild the logical framework. You could write down the main points in your argumentfor example the aims, what you did, what you found, what it meansand then fill in from this, as it were, adding the detail to each part, feeding your content more and more into a structure without losing the bigger picture.

Many of these assignments come straight from the creative writing classes of celebrated novelists like Ethan Canin, Richard Price, Toni Morrison, and Kurt Vonnegut. Within these pages, you’ll learn how Joyce Carol Oates uses running to destroy writer’s block. Elmore Leonard describes how he often finds ideas just by reading the newspaper. E. Annie Proulx discusses finding inspiration at garage sales. Isabel Allende tells why she always begins a new novel on January 8th. And John Irving explains why he prefers to write the last sentence first.
