62. Lesson Plans For Children's Spiritual Education And Moral Education - Story Writ
Article by Bradford from Spiritual Education Lesson Plans.

HOME ABOUT US WHAT'S NEW? FEEDBACK ... CONTACT US WRITING CAPTIVATING DIALOGUE How to Overcome Writers' Block You're off to a great start, everything is going along fine, but suddenly the words stop coming. You know where you want to go but how are you going to get there? What do you write next? You've ground to a halt. You're out of ideas. You're stuck!
There's a name for this. It's called "writers' block" and it hits all of us sooner or later. I know, because I've wrestled with it many times. I sit down at the computer and just cannot think of what I want to say next.
There are lots of ways to deal with this, however, so don't despair. Just consider yourself in the company of most of the writers in the world and learn a few tips from them.
The first thing to do is to sit down at that desk! If you walk around saying, "Oh, I just don't feel like writing today. I'll wait until I can think of something," that will be the end of your story. I've read dozens of articles by well-known and even very famous writers who say that the hardest part of writing is actually sitting down and getting to it. It's even harder when you know you're stuck.
I've been known to wash the kitchen floor in order to avoid my computer on some occasions, and if you were a member of my family you'd know how much I hate that particular chore. In fact, my son came home from school once, walked into the kitchen, and said, "Uh-oh, Mom must be stuck with her writing again. The kitchen floor's clean!"

In THE CAPTIVE MUSE, a psychotherapist and poet explains what causes writer's block or artist's block and what enables writers and artists to work. Excerpt from a Talk by the Author :
What causes the difficulties that writers and artists often encounter? How are we to understand writer’s block or other creative blocks and inhibitions? Why do even productive writers and artists, who may love writing or making art, often dread to approach page or canvas, experience anxiety about their work, or live with inner voices of criticism and self doubt? In the Captive Muse I refer to those inner voices that say, "Who ever you told you were a painter? a writer? a poet? You call that a painting? A story? a poem?"

66. Overcoming Writer's Block
poet William Stafford offers this advice to poets who suffer from Writer s block There is no such thing as writer s block for writers whose standards are low

Overcoming
Writer's Block
Overcoming Writer's Block For many writers the worst part of the writing experience War and Peace with one hand. Carry with you a pocket-sized notebook in which you can scribble ideas for writing as they come to you. How often have you been stopped at a red-light and a great idea has come into your head? It's so wonderful that you know you'll remember it when you get home, but when you sit down at the table, pen in hand, all you remember is the fact that you had a good idea an hour ago. Part of the writing experience is learning that good ideas do not always come to us when we need them. We must learn to catch ideas as they come to us, fortuitously, even as we're about to fall asleep at night. People who tell you that physical exercise is important for mental activity are telling the truth. If nothing's happening on the computer screen or paper, take a walk around the block. Hit the treadmill or tennis courts or drive to the gym. But take your notebook with you. Fresh blood will be flowing through your brain and jogging might just jog something loose in your head. It happens. Another trick is to start in the middle of your writing project. Avoid that problem of getting started by starting on a part of the project that interests you more and then come back to the introductory matter later. This sounds a bit like starting to earn your second million dollars before you've earned your first, but it's really not a bad idea in any case, because sometimes it's easier to say where you're going after you know where you've been. After all, your readers will never know you wrote the introduction last (another joy of word-processing technology!). One final maneuver around the old Writer's Block: talk over your paper with a friend, or just blab away into a tape recorder (even better). Play the tape back and write down what you hear in

67. Writing Prompts Creative Writing
Free writing prompt utilities for poets and short fiction writers. Defeat writer's block using the 'random input' suggestions the poetry generator produces a first line of poetry, while the story starter produces building blocks for fiction.

The Art of Writing Instant Muse Utilities "Inspiration may be a form of superconsciousness, or perhaps of subconsciousnessI wouldn't know. But I am sure it is the antithesis of self-consciousness." Aaron Copland Welcome to The Art of Writing Instant Muse page, a gateway to writing inspiration. There are two writing prompt Muses to choose from: the Poetry Generator , which produces a first line of poetry from lists of random words, and the Story Starter , which furnishes the writer with elements for a story character details, themes, settings, etc. These utilities are based on the principle of random input, a creativity technique involving the use of random (rather than preconceived) words, ideas, or concepts as a springboard for writing. This technique is useful both for beginning writers and for those suffering from "writer's block." As the quote above suggests, the best way be become more creative is to loosen up and not worry about things being "perfect." Approach these tools in a spirit of curiosity, humor, and play: you'll be amazed at what results! Instant Muse Contests Enter the Instant Muse contests for poetry and short fiction, and your work may be featured in the next issue of AoW.

Most writers have experienced that frustrating condition when words just don't come and the page looks blank or the cursor blinks impatiently. Here are some suggestions for unblocking. Create a word processing file in which you have written a working outline of the assignment. Begin filling in the outline with whatever words, phrases, or sentences that come to mind, beginning with the section that is easiest for you. (Don't worry at this point about issues such as grammar, sentence structure, or spelling. You can work on these areas after you have written your ideas down.) Write a friendly letter to your intended audience stating the problems you are having with getting started.

Breaking Through Writer's Block
By Troy M. Hughes Remember that scene in the film Throw Mama From the Train For writers that feeling can be a very scary thing. It is frustrating, even suffocating. It is as if we have just switched off the part of ourselves that is able to create, to make sense, to write. We hear a lot about the causes of Writer's Block: stress (related and non-related to what you are writing), fatigue, burn-out. There are as many causes for it as there are writers, because everyone works and deals with life in his or her own way. We all deal with block in our own ways as well. What I would like to offer here are some ideas for avoiding block altogether, and some for dealing with it. The stock answer for getting through a block is to "write through it". The theory here would seem to be that getting yourself over the hump, so to speak, will help you to keep your work moving along. Going back and fixing up the rough edges is for editing and rewriting. This has worked for me in the past. One writer friend is what I call a note taker; she writes notes to herself within the piece when she hits those patches that she is not sure about. For example: "The rain fell like a wild horse, beating down fiercely, dancing off the ground (Note: Not sure this presents the vision I need here...work with it)."

Notes by Hugh Cook Writer's Block Practical Advice for Dealing with Writer's Block Writer's Block: Summary 1. Force yourself to sit in a chair for an hour with pen and paper in front of you.
2. Try writing simple declarative sentences, for example "Jack met Jill". (Okay, it's not Jane Austen, but it gets us from A to B, laying down a skeleton which we can flesh out later, if necessary.)
3. Try pictures. A resource for shapes, colors, textures.
4. Draw a picture (if you're not Picasso then a stick figure picture is okay) or a floor plan or a map.
5. Work hard (even if fruitlessly) then back away from the work and go do something else, like walking, or fishing, or having a hot bath. Something that does not tie up the mind but, rather, leaves it free to wander. Writer's Block: Details 1. Force yourself to sit in a chair for an hour with pen and paper in front of you. Try it.

Have you truly revealed the “humanity" or soul of your character, their inner and outer life (emotions, fears, psychological, physical, and “surface” traits)? How can your audience relate to each of your characters? Does Big Henry, the protagonist in your novel, ever overcome his phobia or fear of death? If so, how? Do you expose why Sarah Sue might be afraid of marriage and opening up to true love? Has her past history of abuse and domestic violence frightened and/or ‘hardened’ her, preventing her from merging with her soul-mate? Try summing up your book in one sentence and writing it in your journal. Try writing a summary about it, one that might possibly be featured on the back or inside flap of your book and asking other authors, family, and friends what they think. Send it via email attachment or send them a hard copy in the mail. Ask them if they are encouraged to read further? What is their first response? How do these trusted sources feel about your opening line, your opening paragraph, first chapter, or ending? How do you?

At the heart and soul of writing is the desire to write. And your relationship with writing, like all other relationships, can atrophy from the day-to-day wear of disappointment, from lack of support, from lack of feedback, from lack of incentive, from just plain exhaustion, and from a thousand other things. It can be as tough to maintain love in a long-time marriage to writing as it is to keep the love alive in any other relationship. Maybe that sounds improbable (after all, how can writing be both your job and your romance?) but it's true. And the really silly thing is that the same things that will keep your personal relationships alive will keep your writing alive, too. If too much drudgery and lack of attention have left you and your writing not on speaking terms, here are some strategies for putting the hunger and the passion back in your romance.
