Olympic Sports Now Accepting Wagers on Professional Wrestling
Montego Bay, Jamaica (PRWEB) August 19, 2003 Those seeking evidence that "The Greek" is a few chickpeas short of a Gyro gleefully will point out that the Internet wagering giant Olympic Sports (www.thegreek.com) now is accepting bets on "Summer Slam," a pay-per-view extravaganza presented by World Wrestling Entertainment, from Phoenix, Aug. 24. Can the fall of Western Civilization be far behind?
Oh sure, The Greek understands that the matches aren't that suspenseful to those who've planned their outcome, but he's willing to gamble that the script writers at the WWE are so clever that players will have a better chance of escaping from a figure-four leg lock than accurately predicting the event's results. Either that or our man from Athens has had his brains pound into feta cheese from having his head pulverized by a pile driver one too many times.
Among the matches sure to attract the maximum betting limit of $50 is a WWE heavyweight title showdown between champion Kurt Angle, who won an Olympic Gold Medal in wrestling before joining the professional ranks, and Brock Lesnar, the former champion. Angle, who began as a villain but for now is a hero in the WWE's evolving soap opera, opened as a -185 favorite (bet $185 to win $100). Lesnar, who started out as a fan favorite but has turned evil under the tutelage of WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon, the undisputed ringleader of this morality circus, opened as a +155 underdog (bet $100 to win $155).

American Gardner stuns Karelin in huge upset
Posted: Wednesday September 27, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Tuesday November 14, 2000 11:47 AM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Rulon Gardner beat the unbeatable. The American, with no major title to his name, upset Russian Alexander Karelin. It was a match no one thought Gardner could win. But he ended Karelin's string of three Olympic gold medals and the Russian's 13-year unbeaten streak by winning the Olympic super heavyweight wrestling gold medal 1-0 on Wednesday. "When did I think I could beat him? About 10 minutes ago," Gardner said. "I kept saying, 'I think I can. I think I can.' But it wasn't until it was over that I knew I could." Karelin is universally considered the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time, a man who had never lost in international competition, who had not conceded a point in 10 years. And Gardner beat him, stunning a crowd that included IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, who had come to present Karelin with his fourth gold medal the medal he will never get.

The move Wednesday reflected a drive by new IOC president Jacques Rogge to control the size of the Olympics. Under the previous president, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the number of sports and athletes grew steadily without any significant cuts. "This is the first time we don't increase the number of events on the program," International Olympic Committee sports director Gilbert Felli said. "Until now, we added an average of 20 or more events per games since the 1950s." The IOC plan, approved by its ruling executive board, envisions the participation of 10,508 athletes competing in 299 events in Athens. In Sydney last year, there were 10,655 athletes in 300 events.

College Sports Television (CSTV) executives came to Colorado Springs, Colo. to celebrate their relationship with the U.S. Olympic Committee and the local cable outlet Adelphia. Although all of the college and Olympic sports were the focus of the visit, wrestling took center stage in this celebration.
The story line for the night was that CSTV was in town to celebrate its new series, U.S. Olympic Pursuit, which is a regular feature on the new 24-hour college sports network. In addition, the local cable outlet Adelphia had also made a commitment to putting CSTV on the air for the Pikes Peak region.
However, for some reason, wrestling kept coming up all evening.
For instance, when a person first showed up, running on a television monitor was a tape of the recently broadcast Sunkist Kids International Wrestling Championships freestyle finals, the first Olympic sports event on the new U.S. Olympic Pursuit series. The well-publicized match between Olympian Melvin Douglas and college star Steven Mocco was all over the TV screens.
A number of Olympic hopeful athletes were there to support CSTV and its decision to broadcast a variety of college and Olympic sports. Among those meeting fans, signing autographs and making public statements were Greco-Roman wrestlers Kevin Bracken and Ethan Bosch, and freestyle wrestler Dawid Rechul.

NCAA president Myles Brand will be the keynote speaker Thursday for the National Wrestling Coaches Association convention at the Hyatt Regency. The convention is held in conjunction with the U.S. Olympic Trials in freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling. The trials run Friday through Sunday at the RCA Dome. Brand will be the first NCAA president to address the wrestling community, according to USA Wrestling. He recently announced a joint NCAA/U.S. Olympic Committee task force to study the decline in Olympic sports at the college level. "Obviously, colleges and universities are faced with significant economic issues with regard to athletics programs," Brand told The Associated Press last week. "But the benefits these student-athletes bring to campuses and the benefits many ultimately share with the nation on the Olympic stage should not be minimized when institutions make budgetary decisions."

Underachieving U.S. wrestlers must grapple with failure
Click here for more on this story Latest: Sunday October 01, 2000 12:07 PM SYDNEY, Australia It was probably the weirdest and no doubt the worst Olympics in the history of U.S. freestyle wrestling. There were tears and tantrums, boos and bungles, some serious self-examination and even a haunting echo of Rosemary Woods. There was also, for the first time since 1968, zero gold medals for the Americans. "We have to question the effectiveness of our system," said Greg Strobel, one of several U.S. assistants who played musical corner-coaches throughout the tournament. "When you coach by committee it can be a problem." No one except Strobel, who has already announced he will not be an Olympic coach in the future, mentioned the U.S. system as a partial culprit in the failure of this team, which, on paper, was strong enough to win six golds. But the system should be looked at.
