By David Woods May 23, 2004 U.S. wrestlers Rulon Gardner and Cael Sanderson were not where everyone expected after last month's national championships. Today, they are right where they want to be: one man, and two victories, away from the Athens Olympics. Gardner and Cael Sanderson easily handled opponents to win challenge tournaments Saturday night in the U.S. Olympic Trials before 8,639 spectators at the RCA Dome. National champions received byes directly into today's best-of-three finals. Their opponents, including Gardner and Sanderson, had to endure a mini-tournament.

By Helen Buttery In Olympia, the home of the ancient Games, Nike, the winged goddess of Victory, stood in the palm of a 13-metre tall gold and ivory statue of Zeus. Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the statue took ten years to build and paid tribute to Zeus, the deity the Games honoured. According to legend, Zeus declared the area his sacred grounds by striking it with a thunderbolt from Mount Olympus. The Great Altar of Zeus stood where the bolt supposedly landed. Heracles, his son, founded the Olympics in his father's honour. The first record of the Games was in 776 BC, but evidence of unofficial competition appears long before this. Played every four years for nearly 1200 years, the first Games did not occur in a stadium, instead they were played on a strip of grass. A line was drawn in the sand marking the start, hence the saying, "starting from scratch." The only event at the first 13 Olympics was the stade-race, a running race of 192.28 metres. According to mythology, Heracles set the distance for the stade-race by placing one foot in front of the other 600 times. All future stadium tracks were fixed at this distance, but unlike the original straightaway, the tracks were rectangular in shape.

Hawks have a history of Olympic success
By Kelly Beaton - The Daily Iowan Published: Monday, April 19, 2004 It's closing in on 20 years since Ed Banach stepped on the medal stand and, with the world watching, had a gold medal placed around his neck.
"I remember standing at the podium, receiving the medal, and flowers, and everything, and standing up there," said the former Hawkeye and 198-pound world-class wrestler. "It was just a great sense of satisfaction, a great sense of accomplishment."
In the coming days, weeks, and months, no fewer than eight current or former UI student-athletes will put in countless hours in workouts and competitions in order to be able to say that they, like Banach and a select few before them, are the finest in the world.
The journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Years of toiling in the face of blood, sweat, pulled muscles, and broken bones will all come to fruition.

Nine poised for induction into wrestling hall of fame
By VESS MITEV
Register Correspondent
Besides preserving Iowa's rich wrestling history, Mike Chapman has strived to add more to it each year - by inducting wrestlers into a Hall of Fame. The Glen Brand Hall of Fame Inductions are an annual event in April. Named after the three-time All-American Iowa State wrestler from Clarion, the event brings recognition to those who have contributed to the sport in the Hawkeye state. "It's something we began back in 2001," said Chapman, executive director of the International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Newton. "It doesn't matter if they were born in Iowa, or attended school here, as long as they participated in the sport somehow."

History of Oilwrestling - by Mohamed el-Fers Anyone who´d ever seen oilwrestlers recognize immediately the characteristic position of the men in the 4650 year old Babelonic bronze, found in the Chafadji Temple. It is the oldest known evidence of oil-coated wrestling, that unique and highly esthetic ´mother of all powersports´.
(Photo: Elko Westervaarder) 4650 AMSTERDAM KIRKPINAR to say 640th Kirkpinar of Edirne must be a joke. The Kirkpinar was held the FIRST time in Edirne in 1924, and before that in Kapitan Andeervo, former Viran-Teke in Bulgaria.
So year 2001 A.D. would have been the 77th Kirkpinar of Edirne and not the 640 year after a date invented years or maybe centuries later.
I know, it is just a little difference of only 564 years in recent time. All historians agree that it is not more than tale that 40 warriors in the Ottoman army invented oilwrestling, as there is a Babelonic bronze that clearly proves that oilwrestling or Yagli Güres is at least 4650 year old.

Editor's note: In a continuing series, The Denver Post is following wrestler Rulon Gardner, runner Jorge Torres and mountain biker Alison Dunlap as they prepare for this summer's Athens Olympics. This month's update: It's not that Rulon Gardner insists on doing things the hard way, but it seems to work out that way. Three days before the U.S. wrestling championships last month in Las Vegas, Gardner dislocated his wrist playing pick-up basketball with other wrestlers at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. This was only days after he was lucky to avoid serious injury while crashing his motorcycle into a car that was pulling out between two parked vehicles. He was not wearing a helmet.

Mygiakis is the only Greek wrestler who got a gold medal in the modern Olympics history. After a while, a gold medal was hanging around the neck of Mygiakis who celebrated his victory by doing the round of the stadium over the shoulders of his coach and Olympic wrestler Petros Galaktopoulos. For Immediate Release September 27, 2000 Thomas Congratulates Gardner on Olympic Wrestling Victory The following is a statement from U.S. Senator Craig Thomas on the gold medal performance of Afton, Wyoming native Rulon Gardner in Greco-Roman wrestling:
"Let me join fans in Wyoming, and surely now the entire country, in congratulating Rulon Gardner on a stunning victory in Sydney. In what is already being described as 'the miracle on the mat' and one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history, Rulon showed us all that no mountain is too tall and no unbeaten wrestler is too strong for a tough cowboy from Afton.
"I know Reed and his family must feel proud as all Wyoming. Way to go Rulon, they will be celebrating in Afton tonight, and we will be heralding your history-making performance for a long, long time!

There are eight weight classes in both forms of wrestling. The aim in both formsof wrestling is to pin your rival s shoulder to the mat and hold him there.
    http://www.times-olympics.co.uk/communities/wrestling/wrestlingcomp.html
THE COMPETITION There are eight weight classes in both forms of wrestling. These are: 54, 58, 63, 69, 76, 85, 97 and 130kg. The 20 wrestlers in each class will be divided randomly into six pools, two of four men and four of three. Those who win in a pool of four progress to semi-finals, while the winners of pools of three make a quarter-final until two finalists are left, one from each path, direct semi or semi via a quarter-final. The losing semi-finalists wrestle for the bronze medal. Each bout has two three-minute rounds, with 30-second breaks in between. If three minutes of extra time fails to decide a tie, the judges appoint a winner on technical merit. The padded square mat 12 metres square and 4cms thick is being doctored in Sydney, each corner cut to form an octagon, presumably to make the venue prettier. Inside the mat, a circle nine metres in diameter forms the competition area split into three; the yellow centre is divided into a central circle one metre in diameter defined by a red border marks the zone in which the bout starts and resumes, and a circle seven metres in diameter where most of the action takes place, while the outer circle one metre wide is red and marks the "passivity zone". The area of the mat beyond the yellow and red is blue, 1.5 metres wide and known the "protection area". Where Greco-Roman wrestlers are prohibited from using or attacking the legs and rely instead on upper-body strength to throw and lift with, freestyle wrestlers are allowed to employ single-leg and double-leg tackles.
