OLYMPIC HISTORY
"And we compel men to exercise their bodies not only for the games, so that they can win the prizes-for very few of them go to them-but to gain a greater good from it for the whole city, and for the men themselves" Lucian, Anacharsis, ca. AD 170 In a fertile valley of Ancient Greece, at a place called Olympia, the first Olympic Games were held at 776 BC. This games were held every four years, for a thousand years. The Games, like all Greek Games, were an intrinsic part of a religious festival held in honor of Zeus. Hippias of Elis, at ca. 400 BC, compiled a list of Olympic victors, and according to him, the only event at the beginning was a stadium -length foot race (stade). The distance of the race came from the legend, that Hercules, the god of Physical Strength, run the same distance in one breath. It has been speculated, that the games at 776 BC were not the first games conducted, but rather the first organized games. It is believed, that this lead from the peace agreement between the city-states Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic Games back to their King Iphitos. King Iphitos was told by the Delphic Oracle to plant an Olive Tree from which the victor' wreaths for the Olympic Games was cut. Another legend says, that the Games were founded by Heracles, son of Alcmene. In Ancient Greece it was thought that the first Games held in Olympia was organized by heroes and gods.

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

SLAY SLAIN Germany’s Alexander Leipold won his country’s first freestyle wrestling Olympic gold for 40 years amid bad blood and accusations. The 31-year-old outpointed Brandon Slay of the United States to win his first Olympic medal in his fourth Games. Leipold was rarely in any danger in the under76 kg final and steadily stacked up the points as his opponent struggled to make any impression. The German won 4-0 and performed a cart-wheel followed by a back-flip to celebrate his win. "This is my greatest victory," he said. "This is a hard weight category with many champions." The German picked up a huge black eye for his troubles, but it did not bother him. "I don’t want to win a beauty pageant. I wanted the gold medal and that’s why I’m here," he said. Slay took the defeat badly, refusing to shake either his opponent’s or the referee’s hand at the end. He said later: "This is the worst I’ve ever felt in my life after a loss. I don’t believe it was fair. I wasn’t treated fairly by the officials. I went out there and gave it my all but the match was out of my hands." Slay also accused the German of“whingeing like a crying baby”, adding: "He just kept acting to the officials to get the points."

J.J. Keane, then one of Ireland's leading sports administrators was elected to the International Olympic Committee in 1922 and it is now generally accepted that the Irish Olympic Council as it was known at the outset, came to existence in 1922 but due to the loss of the minutes of the early meetings of the Council, the exact date is now not known. Ireland was given formal recognition as an independent nation in the Olympic Movement at the IOC session in Paris in 1924 and it was at the Paris Games that Ireland made its first appearance in an Olympic Games as an independent nation. No medals in the sporting events were won by Ireland at the Paris games but Jack Yeats was awarded an Olympic silver medal for his painting "Swimming" in the Olympic Arts division and Oliver St. John Gogarty was awarded a bronze medal for his "Ode to the Tailteann Games" in the Literature division.

http://www.rulongardner.com/History.html
Rulon was born on August 16, 1971 in Afton Wyoming. Rulon is the youngest 9 children born to Reed and Virginia Gardner. Rulon was taught to work while very young. Raised on a dairy farm, where we grew our own crops, and milked cows twice a day, there was never a shortage of work to be done. When tall enough to see over the tall barley, Rulon was taken, along with his siblings, to the field to help move the sprinkler pipe, or as his dad always said “it is time to move the water.” On many occasions, Rulon and his siblings were lost in the grain, but only for short periods of time before dad found them.
One of the primary summer chores for all of the Gardner children was to “turn the bales.” A favorite pastime to avoid work was to swim in the “watering trough”. Mind you this was not a lake, this was a small tank used to store mossy water for the cattle to drink, and not the cleanest sight on the farm. Rulon has great memories of getting wet, but it was not fun when dad had to stop his work to track down his helpers!
Wintertime also involved many chores.

http://www.usoc.org/sports2/wr/az_hist.html
U SA Wrestling has served the wrestling community for more than 25 years and looks confidently to the future. The organization was founded upon basic principles which remain intact today. Around 1965, several individuals, principally Terry McCann and Myron Roderick, were dissatisfied with the governance of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). They began discussions with Walter Byers, then the Executive Director of the NCAA, with the goal to form a wrestling organization administered by wrestling people. The group wanted to develop an overall program that would: 1) offer competitive programs for wrestlers who had completed high school and/or college; 2) offer educational and developmental programs for wrestlers, coaches and officials in the international styles of wrestling; 3) offer wrestlers, coaches, officials and organizations conducting wrestling programs a voice in policies and procedures directly affecting the sport. Initial organizational meetings were held in January of 1968, where the need to develop a new federation to challenge the AAU was reaffirmed. Subsequently, a brochure which announced the formation of the United States Wrestling Federation (USWF), was circulated in May and June. It defined the goals, objectives, structure and proposed financing, and set the stage for the official organizational meeting. In April of 1969, the USWF conducted its first National Open Championships in Evanston, Ill. The Mayor Daley Youth Foundation, led by Olympians Don Behm and Larry Kristoff, won the first freestyle and Greco-Roman team trophies.
