Greek Olympics
Ancient Times The Greeks invented Olympic athletic contests and held them in honor of their gods. But sports and competitions are part of the history and culture of many ancient civilization - including those of Meso- America. In Egypt there had been many findings and glyphs depicting sports events have been found. In ancient Egypt, acrobats, who displayed physical agility and strength, were mainly viewed as performers. Most Egyptian acrobats were women, and they performed alone or in groups. Young Egyptian boys also participated in acrobatics, and played games with hoops. There are 200 wrestling groups depicted on one wall of the tomb at Beni-Hassan. The wrestlers wear a loin-cloth similar to the cod-piece or loin-cloth of Minoan athletes. Although the scenes portray the various positions and "holds" involved in wrestling, the sport was practiced as part of Egyptian military training, and there is no evidence of organized competition. Ancient Egyptians also participated in various running activities. One of the kingdom's most important festivals was the "jubilee celebration," a festival first celebrated on the 30th anniversary of the reign of Amenophis III, and celebrated continuously in three-year intervals. In the "ritual run", an integral part of the celebration, the current king would run between two sets of three semicircles, the semicircles being cosmic references to the order of the universe. Unlike later Greek footraces, however, the Egyptian king ran alone, without a competitor. Physical evidence of the "ritual run" exists at the pyramid complex of King Djoser, where one can find the ruins of the world's first sports facility, complete with the running track for the "ritual run."

In the valley at Olympia in Elis, a short distance from the western coast of Greece, the first recorded Olympic Games were held. But, it is suspected that the games started 500 years earlier. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term "Olympiad" describing this period. The Olympic Games were originally restricted to freeborn Greeks. The competitors, including those who came from the Greek colonies, were amateur in the sense that the only prize was a wreath or garland. In ancient times, four great games festivals were held in Greece: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. The Olympic Games in
honor of Olympian Zeus was by far the greatest event. Greek games were celebrated in the belief that the spirits of the departed were grateful observing such spectacles, as they did during their earthly life.

A game for a God
Once upon a time the Olympics was an event that started in order to honour the mythical God Zeus, the father of Greek Gods. From the beginning the Olympics was a local competition but later on more and more Greek city states participated. 293 events were organized during almost twelve centuries.
The Olympic area was a combination of temples, halls and the stadium. The Temple of Zeus was one of the Seven Wonders of the World with a 40 feet high statue in gold and ivory of the god.
A game for freeborn Greek
In a beautiful valley, at the city of Olympia in the state of Elis, 320 km west of Athens, the first organised Olympic Games were held 776 BC. The games took place every four years and were open only for freeborn Greek men. Most of the athletes came in the beginning from wealthy families because they had to pay their own expenses.

The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

History of Wrestling. Wrestling is a fast growing sport in Australia. Many Australians know more about the modern Professional Wrestlemania, with all its theatre, public adoration, rich remuneration, and publicity stunts. However, the true sport of wrestling is rooted in antiquity, and is quite different and exciting. Archaeological finds depict wrestling in Egypt and Mesopotamia more than 5,000 years ago. Documentary evidence puts the sport in India and China well before the Christian era. In fact, virtually every society around the globe sports a long tradition of some form of wrestling. And the ancient Greeks were among the most fanatic of fans. The Greeks depicted wrestling on coins, pottery, and statuary. Most of the colonnade of the palaestra at Olympia still stands today, testimony to the site of the wrestling competition in the ancient Olympic Games. The complex included a roofed area for matches and side rooms for the competitors to wash, bathe, and oil down for their matches. Wrestling also figures prominently in classical Greek legend, myth, and epic. The rules were simple back then: Throw your opponent to the ground, making him land on his hip, shoulder, or back. Two of three falls takes the match. Don't punch, gouge, or bite. Unlike today's professional wrestling, there were no managers, ring girls, folding-chair attacks, or steel cages. No ridiculous costumes, either - matches were in the nude.

Little has been handed down about the various styles practiced, but they are thought to have varied greatly from tribe to tribe. Changing of the Guard The English in the Colonies and the French in Canada made wrestling a popular sport at their social gatherings in early pioneer days. Before long, practically every settlement had its own champion, and there would be contests between various title-holders. The colonists started out with the Greco-Roman style, but it proved too dull and wrestling evolved into a more wide-open style. During the 18th Century, wrestling appeared to have mellowed from its early ferocity into a legitimate spectator sport, a bit on the rough-and-ready side, but legitimate. It was the major physical contact sport among men of all classes (boxing did not catch on until near the end of the 19th Century).

Note: RESTLING , mankind's oldest and most basic form of recreational combat, traces its origins back to the dawn of civilization. Carvings and drawings estimated to be between 15,000 and 20,000 years old, found in caves in southern Europe, illustrate wrestlers in hold and leverage positions. Sumerians cast wrestlers in bold relief on stone slabs at least 5,000 years ago, antedating all other artifacts of ancient sport. A small bronze statuette of wrestlers, apparently used as a vase, was unearthed in the ruins of Khafaji, 200 miles from Baghdad. This artifact, dated 2600 B.C., now is housed in the Iraqi national museum.

Changing of the Guard Wrestling also reached a high stage of development in Egypt, where paintings of wrestlers dating to approximately 2500 B.C. have been found in lavish tombs of kings and other high officials. No archaeological excavation or historical document has depicted wrestling so completely and so technically correct as have drawings in the temple-tombs of Beni Hasan in middle kingdom Egypt. Hundreds of drawings there demonstrate clearly that most contemporary wrestling holds were performed in ancient Egypt. In fact, the maneuvers depicted are more closely related to the present-day sport than are those of such modern variants as sumo, kokh, glima, et al.

History and Geography of the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece by Rick Price, PhD. co-owner and co-founder of ExperiencePlus! Specialty Tours, Inc. The Olympics came to us as one of the oldest institutions of Classical Greece. Although the first written record of the games dates to 776 B.C., their origins go back at least five hundred years earlier and are linked to religious events well before that. The games honored Zeus, supreme god of all the Greeks and ruler of the sky (Zeus's brothers Poseidon and Hades ruled the sea and the Underworld, respectively). The Olympic games were officially abolished by the Roman emperor in 394 AD after a run of 1170 years! As god of all kings and of all humans, Zeus ruled from lofty Mt. Olympus north of Athens. His primary role was to keep the peace among those same gods and "men" on earth. In his honor a universal truce applied during the Olympic Games every four years and even though the truce was broken on several occasions, the games were never interrupted as a result of war. The reasons for the location of the games in "Olympia," near the west coast of the Peloponnesian peninsula are lost in history. The site was never a major city or permanent settlement except during the games themselves when tens of thousands of spectators and participants camped on the grounds. Evidence suggests that the site of Olympia was once the location of a religious festival honoring Gaia, the Earth Mother. Indeed, the site must have had strong historic and religious roots as it is located on the western edge of Classical Greece far from the Greek heartland as this

The Olympic Flag (five colored interlocking rings on a white background) was conceived by Pierre de Coubertin. Almost a century after the flag's creation, the six colors, those of the rings (blue, yellow, black, green, red) and that of the background (white), still maintain their symbolism today.
The Olympic symbol, the five interlocking rings, represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of the athletes of the world at the Olympic Games Olympic History
The Olympic Games took their name from the Greek city of Olympia and though there were important athletic competitions held in other Greek cities in ancient times, the Olympic Games were regarded as the most prestigious.
The games were held every four years during August and September and the word "Olympiad", which referred to the four year intervals between competitions, was commonly used to measure time. The first documented Olympic champion was a man named Coroebus, a cook from Elis who won the sprint race in 776 BC. Historians believe that the games had already existed for at least 500 years prior to that date. The Olympic Games originally featured only one event: a race called the "stade", equal to a distance of about 210 yards. By 728 BC two additional races had been added, comparable to the 400 meter and 1,500 meter races of the modern games. The Olympics came to include wrestling, boxing and the pentathlon, as well as specialized events for soldiers and heralds. It was only in 472 BC that the events were spread out over a period of four to five days, previously they had all taken place on a single day.

Rulon Gardner Irvine, CA Gardner made Olympic history in Sydney when he defeated Russian Alexander Karelin, who had not been scored upon in ten years. Upon his return from the Olympics, Gardner became an overnight sensation. He was featured in magazines, newspapers and television talk shows across the country. In February 2002, Gardner nearly died when he got separated from one of his friends while snowmobiling in the Wyoming backcountry. He braved 18 hours in minus-25 degree temperatures before being rescued and airlifted to a local hospital. He suffered severe frostbite and ultimately lost his middle toe on his right foot. The 32-year old Gardner began a grueling comeback in the Fall of 2002, and finally reached the top of the wrestling world when he defeated the defending US and World Champion Dremiel Byers at the 2003 US World Team Trials in Indianapolis. Gardner went on to finish second at the 2003 Pan-American Games.

Brief History of the Olympic Games
Ancient Olympic Games Chronology of athletic events added to the Olympic Games Myths and the Olympic Games Pelops myth ... Athens for Olympic Games of 2004
Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

Wrestling Of the two styles of wrestling, Greco-Roman and freestyle, Greco- Roman is the classic form, the style of wrestling practiced in ancient Greece . Although differences in techniques are numerous, the most obvious is that Greco-Roman is confined to upper-body grappling. Freestyle, by contrast, involves the entire body, and leg attacks are permitted. Click a link to

Greco-Roman - In Greco-Roman wrestling, holds are permitted only above the waist. Spectacular throws are awarded the greatest number of points. These moves, which usually earn 3 points, are quite risky, even for the executor who must place himself in a vulnerable position just to achieve them. A fourth point may be earned in the throw for grand amplitude. It is essentially an appreciation point in recognition of the extra effort the throw requires.
