In one sense, modern decathlon history begins with the Thorpe story test, the pentathlon, for the ancient olympic Games a sprint and ended with a wrestling match

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

History
Freestyle wrestling was on the first modern Olympic program in 1896, with just two weight classes. It was dropped in 1900, but restored in 1904, and it's been on the program ever since. From 1938 through 1980, medals were based on round robin competition. The wrestler with the fewest penalty points in the final round won the gold medal. If two or more wrestlers had the same number of penalty points in the in the final round, standings were based on the number of penalty points in previous rounds. For those years, the number of penalty points is shown. For all other years, the score of the gold medal match is shown. History
Although heavyweight wrestling at the 1896 Olympics was billed as Greco-Roman, it was actually what is now considered freestyle wrestling, since leg holds were allowed. True Greco-Roman wrestling, in which holds below the waist are prohibited, was introduced to the Olympic games in 1906. From 1938 through 1980, medals were based on round robin competition. The wrestler with the fewest penalty points in the final round won the gold medal. American Gardner stuns Karelin in huge upset
Posted: Wednesday September 27, 2000 12:00 AM Updated: Tuesday November 14, 2000 11:47 AM AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) Rulon Gardner beat the unbeatable. The American, with no major title to his name, upset Russian Alexander Karelin. It was a match no one thought Gardner could win. But he ended Karelin's string of three Olympic gold medals and the Russian's 13-year unbeaten streak by winning the Olympic super heavyweight wrestling gold medal 1-0 on Wednesday. "When did I think I could beat him? About 10 minutes ago," Gardner said. "I kept saying, 'I think I can. I think I can.' But it wasn't until it was over that I knew I could." Karelin is universally considered the greatest Greco-Roman wrestler of all time, a man who had never lost in international competition, who had not conceded a point in 10 years. And Gardner beat him, stunning a crowd that included IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, who had come to present Karelin with his fourth gold medal the medal he will never get.

    History of Wrestling Origin:
The first recorded Olympic wrestling match occurred in the Olympics in 708 BC. Wrestling was highly valued as a form of military exercise without weapons. There were two distinct versions of the game, differing according to the holds and the methods of deciding the victor.
    Variations:
    Orthia pale
    Upright and Proper Wrestling
The object of this type of wrestling was simply to throw the opponent to the ground. Three falls constituted a loss for that opponent, and the winner was called the "triakter". The match continued without stops until one man emerged victorious.
    Kato pale Ground Wrestling
Victory in this competition depended on one competitor acknowledging defeat. Defeat was indicated by raising one's right hand with the index finger pointed. Rules of the Game: Blows were not allowed.
    Tripping was permitted.
No biting or gouging was allowed.
    There was no weight distinction.
The wrestlers were anointed with olive oil then dusted with powder to make them easier to grasp. The competition took place in the "keroma", or beeswax, a muddy and sticky arena. Characteristics of a Good Wrestler: Since there was no weight provision in the Olympics, it is obvious that the sport required a strong and stout build. A special combination of agility, skill and craft were also necessary.

A Brief Overview of Olympic History
The Olympic Games is the largest sporting event in the world. It is constantly growing and changing to fit the needs of a changing society (meaning the entire world). Each celebration brings more nations and more athletes to the Games. In the beginning there were only a few hundred athletes, today there are over 10,000 athletes. In the first few Olympic Games there were very few women athletes because they were not welcome, today almost half the athletes are women.
The Modern Olympic Games started in 1896 in Athens, Greece and the 100th anniversary, the Centennial Games, were in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia. The last summer Olympic Games were held in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. The next summer Olympic Games will be in Athens, Greece in 2004.
The 2002 Olympic Winter Games were celebrated in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. The Winter Olympic Games only started in 1924 and are not considered part of the OLYMPIAD, the four year time period between the Games. This special recognition is only for the summer Games, which are more important and have higher participation numbers in both number of countries and athletes.
The Modern Olympic Games are not hosted by a country, but they are hosted by a city. The recent Olympic Games were not the "American" Olympic Games, they were the "SALT LAKE CITY" Olympic Games.

    18. History

    http://wrestlegirl.com/barn1.htm
Womens Wrestling : Women's wrestling is growing and strengthening throughout the world as more nations sponsor teams and competitions for women each year. In the past two years I have had the opportunity to see first hand the Klippan Ladies Cup in Klippan, Sweden and the Gilbert Schwaub International in Tourcoing, France. Hundreds of girls and women, age seven to the senior open level competed in the tournament from all across Europe. The skill, the technique, the hunger for victory, and the enthusiasm looked no different than attending a USA Wrestling tournament here in the United States.
At the high school level the numbers keep increasing. In 1997, the State of Michigan sponsored the first ever women's state high school championships. A total of 120 female wrestlers competed in ten weight divisions. Texas is also starting a women's state high school championship, in Hawaii and in suburban Chicago women's wrestling leagues or conferences have been developed. Right now plans are underway to develop a Women's High School National Wrestling Championship to be be held in Michigan in March of 1998. Even the women's collegiate movement is growing. In 1993, the University of Minnesota-Morris was the first college in the nation to sponsor women's wrestling as an official varsity sport, since that time women's programs have been developed at New York University, Cumberland (KY), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Central Washington, and not to mention countless number of women who have joined their collegiate men's programs.

The Olympic Games were celebrated 320 times every four years in the sacred stadium at Olympia, Greece, beginning in 776 B.C. In 1892, French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin proposes a renaissance of ancient Greek competition. In 1896, his dream is realized as England, Greece, Italy, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United States open Games. James B. Connolly wins triple jump (the first medal in modern Olympic history); American flag is raised and Star Spangled Banner played, beginning tradition of honoring victor and his/her country.
