... Calendar About the Author A graduate of the New School for Social Research with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and from New York University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and History, David H. Lippman is an award-winning journalist who has worked in newspapers, wire services, television, and radio. He began this series while serving as public affairs officer for US Naval Antarctic Support Unit in Christchurch, New Zealand, as Plan of the Week notes for his command. When contacted by the USS Washington Associate Unit , he offered to post the series on their web page. He has continued and expanded the series before and after his discharge from the Navy. He has focused on the USS Washington in this series because of the ship's brilliant combat record and its unique distinction as the only American dreadnought ever to engage and sink an enemy dreadnought. Mr. Lippman also writes articles on World War II history for magazines. One of his articles was recently published in an anthology alongside those of historians Caleb Carr, Stanley Weintraub, and William Manchester. He now works as a Public Information Officer for the City of Newark, New Jersey, where he lives with his family. Comments and criticism are welcome at his e-mail address.

William Davis Rhodes
Veteran of D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge Updated April, 2003 A few years ago, I uncovered a small treasure. It was a document that I had longed to find. And when I finally found it, held it in my hands, it was as if a key had turned within a lock. It was my grandfather's Honorable Discharge. William D. Rhodes, born on 17 December 1917, was 25 when he joined up. Three years later, he was much older. He had seen the bloody Normandy beach code-named Omaha. He had stared into the mists of a snowy forest named Ardennes, a frozen hell where over a million men fought the largest land battle of the war. He had mysteriously "acquired" a motorcycle and cruised the frozen lanes of Belgium, meeting up with a Belgian lass known only as Collette. He had seen a Nazi death camp. And, somewhere along the way, someone had handed him a Silver Star. He was a member of the 3rd Armored Division, the Spearhead that drove into the heart of Nazi Germany. The unstoppable 3rd was the first allied unit to enter Germany, the first to capture a German town (Roetgen), and the first to breach the infamous Siegfried Line. And, when the bloody end finally came, it was the last unit of the First Army's VII Corps to cease firing.

14. European Royalty During World War II
A site by Glenn A. Steinberg that captures the personalities, circumstances, and genealogies of the royal houses of Europe during a particular moment in their history.
http://gsteinbe.intrasun.tcnj.edu/royalty/royalty.html
European Royalty during World War II by Glenn A. Steinberg One may draw from the study of history the lesson that the age of princes is over. . . . For two hundred years we have been watching the decomposition of this system. The princely houses have retained nothing but their pretensions. With these they traffic, and by these they live. . . . If one day we had time to waste, it would be a curious study, that of these princely families, to see how they maintained themselves in power, despite their internal struggles. Their wars always had the most exalted motives. In reality, it was always a question of odd patches of land, whose possession was bitterly disputed. How much Europe has had to suffer, for eight hundred years, from these practices and, especially and above all, Germany! – Adolf Hitler Judging from personal experience I believe the revolution of November 9, 1918, was . . . a revolution of hunger, caused by the desperate desire of the people for peace at any price. . . . The great majority of the people had no particular grudge against the German dynasties. If they had, they would not have restored to their former ruling houses so large a portion of their properties after a nationwide plebiscite. . . . If federalization is to be a constructive element in the future development of Europe and not merely a disguised method for keeping Germany as disunited as possible, the historical development of the country should not be overlooked and sacrificed to arbitrary measures conceived as a result of momentary emergencies and tendencies.

Andrew Bennett provides photographs and history of coastal fortifications of four generations from 1817 to world war ii.
http://andy_bennett.home.mindspring.com/coastal.html
Coastal Fortification on the Gulf of Mexico
Until the late 1940's, coastal fortification was a primary line of defense for the United States. Several distinct generations of coastal fortification exist, each a unique insight into a period of U.S. history.
Along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, coastal fortifications of four generations, the Third System (1817-1867), the Endicott period (1890-1910), the post World War I period (1918-1936), and the World War II era (1937-1945) can be found. Over the last couple of years, I have had the opportunity to visit several sites which have examples of these periods of fortification.
In the following pages, I have included pictures of the fortifications from several sites. They are divided by location, and further subdivided by era when possible.
Any suggestions or corrections to these pages are greatly appreciated. I can be contacted at my email address, listed at the bottom of the page.
