24. To Remember Spain / After Fifty Years: The Spanish Civil War
A history of the Spanish libertarian and anarchist movement with a look back at the Spanish Civil war.
http://www.spunk.org/library/writers/bookchin/sp001642/fifty.html
After Fifty Years:
The Spanish Civil War
Between myth and reality there lies a precarious zone of transition that occasionally captures the truth of each. Spain, caught in a world-historic revolution fifty years ago, was exactly such an occasion a rare moment when the most generous, almost mythic dreams of freedom seemed suddenly to become real for millions of Spanish workers, peasants, and intellectuals. For this brief period of time, this shimmering moment, as it were, the world stood breathlessly still, while the red banners of revolutionary socialism and the red-and-black banners of revolutionary anarchosyndicalism floated over most of Spain's major cities and thousands of her villages. Taken together with the massive, spontaneous collectivization of factories, fields, even hotels and restaurants, the oppressed classes of Spain reclaimed history with a force and passion of an unprecedented scope and gave a stunning reality in many areas of the peninsula to the ageless dream of a free society. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 was, at its inception, the last of the classical European workers' and peasants' revolutions not, let me make it clear, a short-lived "uprising," a cadre-controlled "guerrilla war," or a simple civil conflict between regions for national supremacy. And like so many life-forms that appear for the last time, before fading away forever, it was the most far-reaching and challenging of all such popular movements of the great revolutionary era that encompasses Cromwellian England of the late 1640s and the working-class uprisings of Vienna and Asturias of the early 1930s.

THE U-BOAT WAR IN CARTOONS
A note about the cartoons: Most of these cartoons are from a scrapbook album I own of political cartoons collected between about 1900 to 1948. The cartoons were clipped from a variety of American and European newspapers and magazines. Cartoon #1: BRITANNIA MUST BE MORE CAREFUL HOW SHE WAVES THE RULES January 16, 1915
The title of this cartoon is a play on a patriotic British song, Rule Britannia . It pays homage to Britain's naval strength and begins, "Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves..." This cartoon was drawn early in the war by John T. mcCutcheon, a popular American cartoonist, as a response to Britain's naval blockade of Germany. The three men from left to right areUnlce Sam, John Bull and the Kaiser representing the U.S., Great Britain, and Germany, respectively. Only the Kaiser was a real person. Notice how John Bull is portrayed; he is wearing a short coachman's hat and a vest with the Union Jack (British flag) on it. he is also the physical opposite of Uncle Sam, short and portly rather than tall and slim. We recognize the Kaiser by his mustache, spiked helmet, waving sword and cavalry boots.
    1. According to the artist who drew this cartoon, what effect is England's blockade having on neutral and American shipping?

African-Americans in the U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. Maritime Service The SS Booker T. Washington
Of the approximately 2,700 Liberty Ships, 17 were named for outstanding African-Americans. The first, in honor of Booker T. Washington , was christened by Marian Anderson in 1942. Captain Hugh Mulzac , an African-American, served as master of the ship for four years, delivering troops and supplies to the war zones. Adrian T. Richardson, John Godfrey , and Clifton Lastic also captained mixed-race crews during WWII. Captain Hugh Mulzac
In 1942, against overwhelming odds, Captain Hugh Mulzac became the first African-American merchant marine naval officer to command an integrated crew during World War II. Born March 26, 1886 on Union Island, St. Vincent Island Group, British West Indies, Mulzac entered the Swansea Nautical College in South Wales to prepare for a seaman's career while in his youth. He became an American citizen in 1918, and continued his training at the Shipping Board in New York. He earned his captain's rating in the merchant marine in 1918, but racial prejudice denied him the right to command a ship. Later Mulzac was offered the command of a ship with an all-black crew. He refused, declaring that "under no circumstances will I command a Jim Crow vessel." Twenty-two years passed before Mulzac would again receive an offer to command a naval ship. During World War II, his demand for an integrated crew was finally met, and he was put in command of the

World War IV Cover
Introduction.
World War IV is a competitive wargame set in the near future. The superpowers have managed to drive the world into social and economic ruin resulting in a Third World War. The aftermath of this war caused a technological backslide and a political re-organisation of the world. As a result, the new nations must attempt to forge new borders, establishing themselves as the new world superpowers. Each new country has unique strengths and weaknesses: some have more starting income and resources but have more potential enemies, others are more isolated but need to trade to overcome their resource shortage. For this reason each country needs to adopt a slightly different playing strategy to succeed. As a player in World War IV you will control one of these new countries. You will make all the diplomatic, economic and military decisions to guide your country into a position of world dominance. You will control national security, industrial production and technology recovery. Inevitable your goals will conflict with those of other countries, and so World War IV will begin. World War IV is a strategic wargame for up to 40 players. Games will be run to 7, 10 or 14 day deadlines, with email and special variants available. Over 160 different units spread over 6 categories are available to you during play, as are dozens of economic, military and espionage missions. The regular game has a heavy diplomatic slant due to the number of players and the close proximity of player positions, though other variants are available for those who do not wish to involve themselves in diplomacy.

Since they've been alway positive about this game, so is their interview. EVE probably won't address every online gamers' tastes. In particular, the initial learning curve is fairly long, and the travel and combat elements aren't likely to suit players who want fast-paced action. On the other hand, the game offers a wealth of complexity and freedom in areas like character skill customization and its economy and political systems. read more 0 comments Interviews Homeworld on axis Homeworld 2 Posted by kkania on Jul 19 2003 at 18:29 GameAxis interviewed Relic's Dan Irish about the latest Homerold game.
