Welcome to the renovated Reference Library. Veteran visitors will have noted that the old Reference Library was getting a bit large and cumbersome (not to mention a long download). The large sections such as biographies have been split out into their own separate pages. The buttons at the top and bottom of the page will still take you to the appropriate section. I've included a clickable site map below which will take you directly to the index page you select. For new visitors, there is a brief description of each of these index pages beneath the site map and legend. I hope this new method helps you find your way around a bit more efficiently. If you have a newer browser, the site map will be clickable. If you are using an older model browser, the same selections are available under the map and legend.
In addition to this map, there is a quick jump navigation tool at the bottom of most pages. Just click the arrow to bring up a list of major locales, select one, then click the " Go " button.

... Calendar About the Author A graduate of the New School for Social Research with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and from New York University with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and History, David H. Lippman is an award-winning journalist who has worked in newspapers, wire services, television, and radio. He began this series while serving as public affairs officer for US Naval Antarctic Support Unit in Christchurch, New Zealand, as Plan of the Week notes for his command. When contacted by the USS Washington Associate Unit , he offered to post the series on their web page. He has continued and expanded the series before and after his discharge from the Navy. He has focused on the USS Washington in this series because of the ship's brilliant combat record and its unique distinction as the only American dreadnought ever to engage and sink an enemy dreadnought. Mr. Lippman also writes articles on World War II history for magazines. One of his articles was recently published in an anthology alongside those of historians Caleb Carr, Stanley Weintraub, and William Manchester. He now works as a Public Information Officer for the City of Newark, New Jersey, where he lives with his family. Comments and criticism are welcome at his e-mail address.

World War 1 (1914-1918) Page
The assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand triggered World War 1. But the war had its origins in developments of the 1800's. The main causes of World War 1 were: The rise in nationalism Build-up of military might System of military alliances The rise of nationalism. A build-up of military might occurred among European countries before World War 1 broke out. Nationalism encouraged public support for military build-ups and for a country's use of force to achieve its goals. By the late 1800's, Germany had the best trained army in the world. In 1898 Germany began developing a naval force that was big enough to challenge the British navy. In 1906, the British navy launched the Dreadnought, the first modern battleship. The Dreadnought had greater firepower that any other ship of its time. Germany rushed to construct on just like it. Advances in technology helped aid in making military forces stronger. Machine guns and other new arms fired more accurately and more rapidly that earlier weapons. By the end of the 1800's, technology enabled countries to fight longer and bear greater losses that ever before.

Very soon we will start all over again. Instead of bringing all kinds of information about the second world war we try to bring something special. Our idea is to show pictures and tell stories about us searching and discovering things about this war.
