Impact of the introduction of alien religions on prehistoric animism and ancestor worship, and the interplay of homegrown and foreign religions to the present day. By Jack Miller.

R eligion in the Philippines
Jack Miller
Focus on Asian Studies, The Philippines proudly boasts to be the only Christian nation in Asia. More than 86 percent of the population is Roman Catholic, 6 percent belong to various nationalized Christian cults, and another 2 percent belong to well over 100 Protestant denominations. In addition to the Christian majority, there is a vigorous 4 percent Muslim minority, concentrated on the southern islands of Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan. Scattered in isolated mountainous regions, the remaining 2 percent follow non-Western, indigenous beliefs and practices. The Chinese minority, although statistically insignificant, has been culturally influential in coloring Filipino Catholicism with many of the beliefs and practices of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The pre-Hispanic belief system of Filipinos consisted of a pantheon of gods, spirits, creatures, and men that guarded the streams, fields, trees, mountains, forests, and houses. Bathala, who created earth and man, was superior to these other gods and spirits. Regular sacrifices and prayers were offered to placate these deities and spiritssome of which were benevolent, some malevolent. Wood and metal images represented ancestral spirits, and no distinction was made between the spirits and their physical symbol. Reward or punishment after death was dependent upon behavior in this life. Anyone who had reputed power over the supernatural and natural was automatically elevated to a position of prominence. Every village had its share of shamans and priests who competitively plied their talents and carried on ritual curing. Many gained renown for their ability to develop

Runes and rights
Utah State Prison inmate Phillip Leishman wants his runes back. And, no matter what prison officials think of his religion, his argument should be heard. The runes are 24 small pieces of wood carved with ancient mystical symbols. Leishman says he needs them in order to practice his religion the ancient Celtic order of Asatru with its little-understood pagan rituals.

Thursday June 03, 2004 Reader Question - Abakua societies Reader Val asks: I was wondering if you had any information about the Cuban religion Abakua. I have searched the internet inside and out to find any information on this religion and have had no luck. They are a secret men's society and it originates back to Africa, I do know that much. But I would like to know how one becomes part of the religion, the basic history, what the religion worships. Things like that. I do know a few words related such as arara...possibly a saint nanigo are "priests" that are higher up...and naniguismo. Beyond that I am stuck and frustrated. Would you be able to find ANY information on this for me?

129. China, Taoism And Religions
A philosophy, a religion and the basis for Chinese Medicine, Taoism represents the wisdom accumulated over Chinese history and promotes harmony among beings and nature.
http://www.index-china.com/index-english/Taoism and A Few Words.html
Home Agriculture Art Business ... Travel Chinese Philosophies and Religions Taoism Taoism and A Few Words about Tao Taoism is a philosophy, a religion and also the basis for Traditional Chinese Medication. It represents the wisdom accumulated over 5,000 years of Chinese history. Together with Confucianism and Buddhism, it has been continuously guiding Chinese in behaviors and governing. There are some very basic different approaches taken by the West and Chinese philosophies. The West treats individual as an independent and separate entity. Chinese treats individual as an element in the whole universe and is interrelated. West tends to be self-centered and thus any blame will be first on others. On the opposite, Chinese is taught to merge self into the environment as a whole or there is no self at all. Tao and Taoism are different from "God" and "Bible". To understand Taoism, one has to "unlearn" or break out from own paradigm to view it from a completely new angle. "Tao" means "behavior, understanding and the constant changing from and to". Taoism is a philosophy and a belief of simplicity and the very nature of universe. There is no absolute "stillness". Everything, including the universe, is changing all the time. The relative "stability" can be achieved when a harmony is reached between "Yin" and "Yang", which are said to be the opposite but related natural forces in the universe. There are five elements in everything. The following diagram described their interrelationship.

Article from a prominent Wiccan organization explaining the differences between paganism, new age, and Native American spirituality.
http://www.medeaschariot.com/archive/version4/wicca/white.htm
Wicca and Magick
What may come as a surprise to many people who explore Wicca entirely for its occult aspects is that Wicca sometimes has nothing to do with magick. Although this is not the case for me, and most other Wiccans I know do not consider it the case for themselves, I would like to point out this distinction as further evidence that "white witchcraft" is neither an accurate nor suitable definition of Wicca.
I can't pound into people's heads enough that Wicca is a religion
rather than any of the following:
1. White Witchcraft
Not all Wiccans cast spells. They do worship a Goddess, in some traditions (such as mine) a God as well, and I suspect that all do ritual sooner or later. To give a parallel that might sink in, some Wiccans take a ceremonial approach similar to the Catholic Church, with women and a more pleasant view on birth control.
2. New Age Movement
Mature, informed Wiccans are NOT New Agers. We play nicely with New Agers, and some of their beliefs and ideas may interest us, but our defined philosophy focuses much more on dealing with the ordinary world and managing its sometimes harsh realities, while New Agers believe that the solution to life's problems is banishing negativity, and at least in my experience, paying a lot of money to do so. In the New Age movement you will find extensive focus on channeling, Angels, and external spirit guidance. Wiccans do call upon spirit guides and some do work with Angels and channeling, but it is not the main focus of our work by any means.
