Jesus and the World Religions
J. A. Di Noia
First Things 54 (June/July 1995): 24-28. Is Jesus Christ the unique mediator of salvation? I was one of five panelists assigned to address this question at a recent meeting of Catholic theologians. I was the first to speak and, as it turned out, the only panelist prepared to advance an unqualified affirmative response to the question. Why is this? Why would a group of Catholic theologians decline to affirm what, until recently, would have been considered an unquestionable tenet of ecumenical Christian faith? As the session unfolded, it became clear that their reluctance to do so was motivated at least in part by a desire to avoid giving offense to religious people of other traditions. The underlying premise of their remarks and of the ensuing discussion seemed to be this: To ascribe a uniquely salvific role to Jesus Christ would constitute a denial of the salvific role of other religious founders (like the Buddha and Muhammad) and thus would be an affront to their communities. The way that many theologians think about this issue has been influenced by the pluralist theology of religions popularized by John Hick, Paul Knitter, and others. Indeed, Paul Knitter was one of the panelists at the session mentioned above. In a nutshell, pluralists claim that in one way or another all religions aim at salvation. In John Hick's influential definition, salvation is the movement from self-centeredness to "Reality-centeredness." Since, according to pluralists, ultimate Reality is incomprehensible and ineffable, no one religious description can claim primacy over rival descriptions, and no tradition can claim exclusive rights to the means of salvation.

    The Wisdom of the Ages
The World's Poets and Mystics have had access to quite amazing realms of perception that are usually denied to more conventional persons!!!
Many people might presently perhaps consider the Mystics and Poets to be interesting - but largely irrelevant in practical terms.
We, however, consider the insights of the Mystics and Poets to be uniquely relevant. So relevant in fact that we confidently refer to them as:- " The Wisdom of the Ages " If you will be so kind, and so open-minded, as to give our presentation of the QUITE AWESOME Wisdoms that have been won by the Mystics and Poets a fair hearing we believe that we can firmly establish your own opinion of their collective insights as one of full respect and grateful appreciation.

    About the Author

    For Younger Students:
Religious Buildings Many religions include some form of community worship. The religious community often gathers together to celebrate and worship in buildings: churches, temples, and mosques, for example. This unit focuses on the design of those buildings. Have students research religious buildings and address the following issues:
  • When was this building constructed?
  • What is this building called? (Temple, Synagogue, Mosque, Cathedral, etc.)
  • With what religion is this building associated?
  • Why do you think the building looks the way it does? Is there significance to it having a certain number of rooms, a certain type of roof, height, etc?
  • Describe some of the decorative features of the building.
  • What materials were used in its construction?
  • What is the name of the God(s) that the people using the building worship(ed)? Have children construct their building out of cardboard, clay, or other materials, or render it in painting or drawing. Then, have children share their creation and information about their building with the class. Web Resources: A Bow of the Head: Religions of the World
