Who Owns the Ancient Classics?
This article appeared in History Matters! Ideas, Notes, and News about History Education 10.9 (May 1998), pp. 1-7. It has been updated as needed. In longer form, the article first appeared in World History Bulletin 11.2 (Summer/fall 1995), pp. i-viii. History Matters! www.history.org/nche
. . . stood behind one of the huge pans and ladled soup into bowls which were held out to him by the prisoners, who hurriedly filed past. He was the only cook who did not look at the man whose bowl he was filling, the only cook who dealt out the soup equally, regardless of recipient, and who did not make favorites of . . . personal friends . . . picking out the potatoes for them, while others got watery soup skimmed from the top. The homely image of doling out food impartially to hungry people fits the curricular reform I am about to recommend. To be equitable in our schools, we need to make sure that all students have access to basic subject matter. This has not been the case for the ancient classics in our public high schools; only special groups are given the solid and nourishing intellectual food which is the classics. "Ancient classics," as I use the term here means the cultural products of the ancient Greeks and Romans: their literature, history, and philosophy; their art and architecture; and other material remains of their civilizations. These two ancient peoples left many enduring and powerful models of how to live well. Although often rich with ethical meaning, these are non-sectarian models with the advantage of not being connected with any of the warring sectarian religions.

page summary
Why study history? History is the story of the human world. History seems to be more popular than ever with the public. Progressive and postmodernist scholars have questioned the uses of history. Nonetheless, history remains a central feature of the school curriculum for these reasons:
-History shows us what it means to be human.
-History improves judgment.
-History provides instructive examples.
-History makes us better thinkers. -History supports common cultural understanding and dialogue. -History satisfies a need for identity. -History gives pleasure. -Studying the past is preparation for the future. 2003 Michael G. Maxwell Teaching history and geography: The goal of education Combining history and geography The nature of history Why teach history? What to teach How to teach Learning and thinking A note to new teachers "The student who reads history will unconsciously develop what is the highest value of history: judgment in worldly affairs. This is a permanent good, not because "history repeats" - we can never exactly match past and present situations - but because the "tendency of things" shows an amazing uniformity within any given civilization. As the great historian Burckhardt said of historical knowledge, it is not 'to make us more clever the next time, but wiser for all time.'" -Jacques Barzun

World history textbooks are chronological narratives that attempt to provide a broad overview of history. Complaints against textbooks are legion, and many history teachers have abandoned them. Yet, without a chronological overview, students will experience disorientation, and many teachers will be lost. Educators have advocated rethinking the textbook, reducing it to a core of essential knowledge. The Student's Friend stands as a concrete attempt to rethink the textbook. Public policy battles have been waged over the content to be included in history instruction. The Bradley Commission offers thoughtful and realistic guidance. 2003 Michael G. The Romans preserved much of the Greek culture and blended it with their own traditions to give us the Classical ideal. Their military conquests brought an empire to Rome that even surpassed that of Alexander the Great. For nearly a thousand years all roads led to Rome. From a small village on the Tiber River to the greatest Empire (Maps) the world had ever known, Rome left a rich heritage for all who followed. Back to Top

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 37 million people in the United States are of Hispanic origin. That's about ten percent of us! Teaching of the contributions of Hispanic Americans, and learning about the cultures from which they come, will be the focal point of many classroom activities and discussions in the weeks ahead as students across the United States recognize Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15. But why teach about Hispanic heritage? Or, for that matter, why teach about any heritage? Clearly, teaching about the contributions of Latinos can only help to build the self-esteem and the pride of those who identify themselves as Mexican-American or Cuban-American or Puerto Rican-American or . . . . But, even more importantly, it is essential that all students learn to understand the ethnic diversity that is our country, according to

Welcome to Teaching World History in Georgia (TWHIG) a Web site established in 1997 by the University System of Georgia to advance teaching, research and service in the field of World History. Future plans for this site include a gallery featuring sample world history course syllabi, effective classroom instructional techniques and a bulletin board. These galleries will be designed to assist educators at all levels of instruction in sharing their experience in teaching world history in the state and to help them stay current with new developments in the field. For the moment, the site will serve as a gateway to other sites of significant interest to Georgians interested in world history. Two of the most significant of these sites are the Web site of the World History Association, which Georgians Marc Gilbert, (North Georgia College and State University), James Gillam, Marjorie Ganz and the late Martin Yanuck (all Spelman College) helped found in 1983 and the website of the Southeast World History Association, a WHA regional affiliate which grew out of a Georgia World History Association founded in 1987. Questions regarding the site and its future development should be directed to Marc Gilbert, professor of history at North Georgia College and State University, at mgilbert@ngcsu.edu.

According to Five Epochs of Civilization , we are now in the middle of the fourth epoch, which is the age of entertainment. A culture focused on entertainment has little appetite for theories concerning world history. Journalists working for newspapers, radio or television find them too boring or, at least, uninteresting to our contemporaries who pursue fast-paced lives It is not enough, then, to devise a grand scheme of history which we think interesting. This should be brought to a larger group of people. Either world history can be disseminated though education or through the media of mass communications. In 2002, the author of Five Epochs of Civilization was involved in a project to create a new charter high school in St. Paul, Minnesota (to be named after UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan who went to college in St. Paul) but his group was unable to obtain funding.
