By mid-August, Filipino rebels and U.S. troops had ousted the Spanish, but Aguinaldo's hopes for independence were dashed when the United States formally annexed the Philippines as part of its peace treaty with Spain. The Philippines, a large island archipelago situated off Southeast Asia, was colonized by the Spanish in the latter part of the 16th century. Opposition to Spanish rule began among Filipino priests, who resented Spanish domination of the Roman Catholic churches in the islands. In the late 19th century, Filipino intellectuals and the middle class began calling for independence. In 1892, the Katipunan, a secret revolutionary society, was formed in Manila, the Philippine capital on the island of Luzon. Membership grew dramatically, and in August 1896 the Spanish uncovered the Katipunan's plans for rebellion, forcing premature action from the rebels. Revolts broke out across Luzon, and in March 1897, 28-year-old Emilio Aguinaldo became leader of the rebellion.

General Strike 1926 - 27 In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days. The miners continued to strike but returned to work in August, accepting lower wages and longer hours. Trade union membership declined after the strike. Nevertheless, it provided the excuse for retaliatory measures against trades unions and led to the passage of the 1927 Trade Disputes Act, which restricted the ability of workers to strike.

THE GREAT WAR
The Great War ended in 1918. For many years afterwards its causes, and the conduct of all the participants were minutely picked-over, investigated and analysed. Subsequently, numerous books were written on all the War's aspects. Those soldiers who had fought in the trenches returned home and tried to resume normal lives - often by no means easy, especially for those who had been wounded, not only physically but also mentally by the horrors which they had experienced. However, although the momentous events of World War Two and the passage of time gradually dimmed people's memories, there were many who still remembered the events of those awful years. Gradually during the past fifteen years or so there has been, I believe, a re-awakening of interest in the Great War and I should like to use this WWW page to help encourage that trend. I believe that there is still a large amount of unpublished material in existence about the Great War. My intention is to add suitable and appropriate articles sent to me by interested readers to this page. To start things off I have attached a number of my own files which, I hope, some will find useful and interesting.
