Programs at Duke Library Specialists and Departments Subject Librarians for History Librarians who specialize in specific areas, periods or formats. Rare Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library The holdings of the Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library range from ancient papyri to records of modern advertising. They number more than 200,000 printed volumes and more than 9,500,000 items in manuscript and archival collections. Public Documents and Maps Department Holdings include U.S. government publications back to 1789, from all agencies and Congress. Only the most recent documents are in the online catalog, but there are indexes to historical documents in the Department. Perkins is also a depository for North Carolina and European Union publications, and has an extensive collection of United Nations and other international publications. The map collection has world wide coverage dating back to 1900, and some facsimiles of older maps. Microforms Department Many important historical materials and backfiles of newspapers are on microfilm in this department, located in Perkins basement. Not all are in the online catalog yet. Check the card catalog or ask at the Reference Desk.
