THIRD WORLD TRAVELER puts up magazine articles and book excerpts
that offer an alternative view to the corporate media about the state of democracy in America,
and about the impact of the policies of the United States' government,
transnational corporations, international institutions, and the corporate media,
on war and peace, democracy, free speech, social and economic justice, and human rights,

" The news and truth are not the same thing. "
Walter Lippmann
"The twentieth century has been characterized by three developments of great political importance: the growth of democracy, the growth of corporate power, and the growth of corporate propaganda as a means of protecting corporate power against democracy."
Alex Carey
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter, and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
Abraham Lincoln
"To become informed and hold government accountable, the general public needs to obtain news that is comprehensive yet interesting and understandable, that conveys facts and outcomes, not cosmetic images and airy promises. But that is not what the public demands."

Visitors are encouraged to buy the books and subscribe to the magazines that appear on this website, to ask their libraries to put them on their shelves and their bookstores to stock them, and to tell others about the wealth of information that they provide.
For, without public awareness of and support for independent progressive authors, publications and publishers, this much-needed information may not continue to be available.
"Four sorrows ... are certain to be visited on the United States. Their cumulative effect guarantees that the U.S. will cease to resemble the country outlined in the Constitution of 1787. First, there will be a state of perpetual war, leading to more terrorism against Americans wherever they may be and a spreading reliance on nuclear weapons among smaller nations as they try to ward off the imperial juggernaut. Second is a loss of democracy and Constitutional rights as the presidency eclipses Congress and is itself transformed from a co-equal 'executive branch' of government into a military junta. Third is the replacement of truth by propaganda, disinformation, and the glorification of war, power, and the military legions. Lastly, there is bankruptcy, as the United States pours its economic resources into ever more grandiose military projects and shortchanges the education, health, and safety of its citizens."
Chalmers Johnson, Sorrows of Empire

Also included are the subdivisions of various countries (the links are at the bottom of the respective country entries), as well as a selection of international organizations.
