exploited. LAKES AND SEAS. The Caspian Sea The Caspian Sea, which isthe largest landlocked body of water in the world (424,240 sq. km
http://www.salamiran.org/IranInfo/General/Geography/
Location
Iran is situated in south-western Asia and borders the three CIS states, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Republic of Turkmenistan, as well as the Caspian Seas to the north, Turkey and Iraq to the west, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south and Pakistan and Afghanistan to the east.
LANDSCAPE
A series of massive, heavily eroded mountain ranges surround Iran's high interior basin. Most of the country is above 1,500 feet, one-sixth of it over 6,500 high. In sharp contrast are the coastal regions outside the mountain ring. In the north, the 400-mile strip along the Caspian Sea, never more than 70 miles wide and frequently narrowing to 10, falls sharply from the 10,000-foot summit to 90 feet below sea level. In the south, the land drops away from a 2,000 foot plateau, backed by a rugged escarpment three times as high, to meet the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Mountains The Zagros range stretches from the border with the Republic of Armenia in the north-west to the Persian Gulf, and then eastward into Baluchistan. As it moves southward, it broadens into a 125-mile-wide band of parallel, alternating mountains lying between the plains of Mesopotamia and the great central plateau of Iran. It is drained on the west by streams that cut deep, narrow gorges and water fertile valleys. The land is extremely hard, difficult to access, and populated largely by pastoral nomads.

General Information At Memorial, geographers learn to investigate environmental systems from human and physical perspectives. The integrated nature and spatial organization of our world are key themes in geography. Geographers have the unique capacity to effectively use and integrate multi-disciplinary information for understanding and explaining interactions in a spatial context. Geography has been taught at Memorial since 1946 and was raised to the status of full department in 1960. Graduate studies began in 1970 with the M.A. and M.Sc., and the Ph.D. was added in 1992. The Department entertains productive academic and research links with other departments such as anthropology, biology, computer sciences, earth sciences, economics, English, folklore, history, philosophy, physical oceanography, and sociology. Our mission statement is to foster a spirit of inquiry about the geography of the world around us through our teaching and research, and to provide our students with the analytical tools needed to explore the questions that arise and the skills with which to communicate their findings.

Map of the Known World
Overview of Known World
The world of Zalanthas is a vast planet which evidence suggest was widely explored sometime in the distant past. However, since the time of the Empire of Man, and possibly for many Ages before, the expanse of Zalanthas which has been known to demihumans has been called the Known World. While enormous in its own right, the Known World probably consists of no more than a small fraction of the total size of the world. The Known World lies on the northern shore of a massive basin called the Sea of Eternal Dust (q.v.) and extends northward to the reaches of the Grey Forest (q.v.). Its eastern boundary is the Great Salt Flats (q.v.) and on the west lies a giant unnamed canyon. No known history records lands outside of these boundaries, or whether there might even be hospitable conditions for life in those outer reaches. The only being who is sure to have existed beyond the Known World is the Dragon himself. Within the Known World are a large varitey of landscapes. A rock formation called the Shield Wall trisects the realm into three relatively equal portions: the southlands, the tablelands, and the scrub plain.

** In this course, we conduct a systematic topical and regional survey of the world's seven major areas. Combining textbook readings, videos, slides, and discussions, students gain an appreciation of regional cultural diversity and an understanding of the dynamics of the emerging global economy. As part of the course structure, we will debate key issues and problems relevant to contemporary society in each of the world's regions. This is an exciting and stimulating course that will broaden your knowledge and understanding of your individual role in the world and of relationships between different societies and countries. You must come to class ready to learn and to challenge ideas.
