Who We Are
Animal Heartline Humane Association is a not-for-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. We save homeless animals by finding shelter for them, giving them medical attention and then finding them a new permanent home if we cannot locate their owners. We do not euthanize animals when we cannot find them a home. Since we do not have a shelter facility, much of our money is used for boarding expenses. Our money comes from donations from the public.

The President's visit
In her second week the president visited the local community and Helen and 20 chosen kids go to represent the school The prologue
The month leading up to Helen's arrival had been punctuated with fuel crisis after crisis and planes were arriving at all sorts of times due to refueling on their way to Gambia . GTS arrived at the airport to meet her flight and watched the passengers disembark, go through customs and then leave - No Helen. We checked the flight checked everywhere at the airport- No Helen. We drove back to the restaurant. We got a phone call that Helen was at the airport waiting for us. - We returned to the airport and there was Helen. JMC had two flights that day, the one Helen was on was due to arrive first but had stopped to refuel, the later one had not stopped and arrived first, but no one at the airport knew - that's Gambia - it's a JMC flight -who cares which one has which number. Settling in
Helen stayed in with GTS for the first few days, while she acclimatized to the weather and the surroundings, but within the first 10 days was settled into her little flat and had already started at the school, here is her first report.

Home
Comments to GTS During the first week of Helen's she joined the kids to welcome him. Tuesday 4th February sees a visit to the local village of Kololi by President Jammeh. 20 kids have been chosen to sing 3 songs to him. Rehearsals started at midday and they were having problems keeping in tune. Eventually though, they get it right and all was well. We arrrived in Kololi at 3.00 pm and there was a lot of music and dancing going on – such a big occasion. The President didn’t arrive until just before 7 pm !! (Dark in Gambia even in February, so no pictures iof his Excellency) The kids were marvellous - having to stand and wait all that time – no moans, no groans, they were just so happy and content to be there and representing their school. The next day another special assembly was called to announce that President had given approximately £780 to the school and the headmistress decided that the money would be spent on a huge party for everyone in the school. She felt it so important that everyone in the school should be able to celebrate the school's good fortune.

Chewie
Chewie is one of the best dogs I have ever met. He is so well behaved and such a little love.
He got adopted but then started to urinate in the house. It didn't seem right; I knew Chewie would never go in the house unless something was wrong with his health. Sure enough, he had bladder stones. After a month on medication and special food the stones were the still the same and he needed surgery. At that point, his adoptive home decided not to take him back.
He was doing well, then out of nowhere at the end of March he started losing weight. One day he began urinating excessively. Then he started drinking like he couldn't relieve his thirst. Then he couldn't stand up. All this happened in the space of about 8 hours.
We rushed him to the emergency vet and he was diagnosed with diabetes. He quickly got much worse and they didn't hold out much hope for him. He developed an infection and his blood sugar was over 700.
We wouldn't give up on him though, and 10 days later he walked out of the hospital on his own and has been doing great ever since.
