The Workshop working with volunteers. The more hearts, the more hands Aftercare by volunteers. Are there volunteers in your country? How does it work?
http://home.wanadoo.nl/hittjo/engels/agenda/workshop volonteers.htm
The Workshop: 'Working with Volunteers The more hearts, the more hands: Aftercare by volunteers. “Since I have been supporting ex-inmates my own faith has been stimulated.” “As prison chaplain I can finish my work with more satisfaction, for a volunteer will continue outdoors the work I started indoors.” “Without my buddy I had not managed; I really feel everything will be fine again.” Three statements from different points of view, which show the use of volunteers. In the first part of the workshop we focus on the question how ISNA (Inter-church Foundation Aftercare Ex-inmates) started a network of volunteers in the Netherlands. We tell about problems and possibilities. A volunteer will tell about his experiences. Of course you will be provoked to ask, respond. In the second part we will learn by exchanging our experiences. Are there volunteers in your country? How does it work? Are there problems? What are the risks? What are the chances in a uniting Europe? Jacques van Hout and Herman Vooijs are looking forward to meet you! Herman Vooijs

For some time, questions have been asked about why some volunteer organizations are more successful than others. By and large, the problem is not with the leadership of the organization. Many talented volunteers bring substantial leadership experience from either the private or the public sector. The problem may be more closely related to unrealistic assumptions regarding the implementation of leadership for organizations. Through personal experience, four common assumptions regarding leadership for volunteers have emerged. These benchmarks were more a result of armchair observations and hard knocks than the result of research. Research indicates these heuristics, however commonly accepted when working with volunteers, may cause more problems than they cure. Volunteers are attracted to organizations for a variety of reasons. Generally, the motivations for aligning with others in a voluntary effort can be classified either as intrinsic, that is, doing something for the sake of the activity, or extrinsic, or doing something for an expected payoff. Whichever the case, the volunteer expects to do something. The following generally accepted assumptions may be a source of problems for volunteers willing to work.

Volunteerism can be rewarding and beneficial to both sides: the volunteer gets to meet new people, practice their skills and even learn new ones, and feel good about what they are doing; schools or other organizations can get cost-effective help, and reach a larger community. However, volunteer projects can also be frustrating and time-consuming. Additionally, working with technical volunteers involves additional issues which should be addressed:
