Introduction and Background In Making Words, an innovative word study and word play activity introduced by Pat and Jim Cunningham (1992) , students are guided through the process of using a limited number of letters to make a series of words. They begin by creating short words and end with longer ones. Through the regular use of this type of constructivist and scaffolded word-building activity, students learn about the spelling structure of words to the point where their word recognition improves significantly. ). The activity has become an effective and popular approach for teaching students about words. Although research about Making Words itself is not yet available, standardized and informal measures have demonstrated remarkably positive results in the reading development of children in the early grades who receive instruction based on the overall program of which the activity is an integral part ( ). One of the more innovative and popular approaches to word-recognition instruction is Making Words, an activity developed by Pat and Jim Cunningham ( Making Words is a central activity in the Word Study block of Cunningham, Hall, and Defee's (1998) Four Blocks elementary reading curriculum. As a curricular framework for a balanced approach to reading instruction, the Four Blocks program appears to have enormous potential for improving and accelerating students' progress in reading. Certainly, any success students experience in the Four Blocks curriculum must be due, at least in part, to the use of the Word Study block and the Making Words activity. It is worth noting that Making Words was one of only a few instructional activities mentioned in Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children Stahl, Duffy-Hester, and Stahl (1998) Stahl (1992) and Stahl, Duffy-Hester, and Stahl are found in the Making Words instructional activity. Moreover, the enormous popularity of Making Words among teachers, evident from the several published reports on the topic, attests to the value of having students learn about making words in the sort of supportive environment that the activity embodies. In an earlier article in this journal Rasinski, 1999

Writing an Approach Paper Several times this school year, you will be asked to write an "approach paper" concerning novels read in class. This web page explains the assignment and offers a sample approach on a novel everyone read as sophomores, To Kill a Mockingbird . Please type your approach paper using one inch margins, 11 or 12 pt. fonts, and refer to your in-class handout to see how the final paper should be formatted on a regular sheet of paper. If your paper has trouble fitting on one page, try a 10 pt. font size and widen the margins to .8 inches.
Writing an Approach Paper: An approach paper consists of several sections: I. Proper heading with your name, date, class, and novel/play title II. Summary Paragraph: A three or four sentence paragraph which explains the ENTIRE novel using as much description and detail as you can manage. To encourage your writing style, you may not use semi-colons or colons in this paragraph, and every sentence must start out in a different way. Prepositional phrases, gerund phrases, normal word order clauses, participial phrases, and infinitive phrases are some of the different ways you might choose to start these sentences. This helps make your writing more interesting to read. This is often the most difficult section of the approach paper to write.

Gus Mahlzon drives his daughter, Angie, crazy. Always an eccentric, he's become even more so since retiring and moving in with his single, schoolteacher offspring. He spends hours in his LazyBoy wearing a pyramid made of clothes hangers and duct tape, and his local access cable show, "Thinking About Life With Gus", is an embarrassment. He's also an embarrassment to his new black friend, Betty, when he tries to talk "street", to "get down with my brothers and sisters..." When Gus begins to meddle in Angie's personal business, harangues her for wasting her life and talents, and plays matchmaker between her and an old schoolmate, he really sets her off. Signs that he's drinking, instances of speaking gibberish, and the ultimate betrayal, showing her private writings to one of her students, trigger a confrontation in which she thunders, "What made you think you could do something like this?...the booze? Senility?, too many sessions with that stupid pyramid, what? Just what the hell is going on in that head of yours?" only to learn that what's going on in his head is astrocytoma.

Paul Matthews writes: “The two full-time courses that I offer during the year are open to beginners and the more experienced alike. Besides serving the needs of individual writers, I believe that the ways of working that I have developed over many years open both a path of self-transformation through language and the possibility of a new work in the world, bringing living language into family and community, workplace and classroom. There is an urgent need for this in today’s society, and I look for potential collaborators in such work.” Whom the Work should serve: Those who seek renewal and meaning in their lives through a focussed creative work. Writers who wish (through poetry, story and personal journal) to enhance their language skills and creativity. Teachers at primary, secondary and adult levels - Workers in the social field seeking a creative medium. Therapists who recognize the healing potential of speaking and listening and the written word.

Writing a Humorous Speech
by Alison White Many people labour under the misapprehension that they are not humorous. They are afraid to use humour in their presentations and the thought of entering the humorous speech contest is unthinkable. Edward De Bono describes humour as the classic example of lateral thinking. It is taking any situation and looking at it in a different way.
Types of Humour
Humour in the form of jokes is basically comprised of four elements: Word Play (including puns): Where we use a word or words in a different context to the rest of the story as the punch line: An angler is a jerk on one end of a line, waiting for a jerk on the other end. What do you get if you cross a post-modernist with a member of the Mafia? An offer that you can't understand. How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb? One, but the light bulb has to want to change. She was only on optician's daughter but two glasses and she made a spectacle of herself. Understatement: In which the seriousness of the event is made humorous by understating the impact. It is almost as if the person does not fully understand the significance:

WRITING FOR THE WEB
CREATIVE SPELLING
Unexpected spelling can be useful
when you're writing for the web
- Provided it's intentional!
My first taste of writing for the web consisted of thinking up the wording for animated banners. Ginger here had several things to say, one of which was "Wannabetterbanner?" It was more appropriate than "Do you want a better banner?" It also took up less space, a vital consideration when you're working on a banner. With dot-com names growing longer every year and hyphens rarer, surfers are used to seeing several words fused into one. Besides, if they don't get the meaning of an odd-looking word first time, ten to one they'll be curious enough to watch the animation until it appears again. Hardly the end of the world! In playing around with syllables, gluing them together and pulling them apart again, you might just happen on a newly compounded word you could use as a domain name. (A likely story - but you never know.) A good way of seeing - or rather, hearing if creative spelling will work, is to say it aloud.

Much emphasis is placed on the enjoyment and pleasure of writing creatively. In-class discussions will include understanding the basic nature of putting words on paper to express thoughts, how to motivate students to want to write, and ways make writing more "real world" and less an academic enemy. A major objective of this course will be to help future educators see themselves as creative writers so that they might inspire their students to experiment with the beauty of the written word. Students should leave this course with a portfolio of writing samples and resources that will aid them in classroom writing experiences. Class format:

    Western Kentucky University

Division of Literacy Handouts/Activities Guides On-Line Resources Books that Facilitate Writing Background Reading for Creative Writing The following quotes and ideas are taken from: Frank, M. (1995). If you're trying to teach kids how to write . . . you've gotta have this book. Nashville: Incentive Publications. The focus should not be on teaching writing,
it should be on teaching kids to be writers. "Literature is the best stimulator for writing that I know.
Make it a point to saturate your students with literature -
all kinds - all the time" (p. 76).
Writing ISN'T taught by saying, "Write ...," and then scoring what kids already know how to do. It IS taught by offering challenging directions, presenting patterns, and providing endless examples that open doors to original expression (p. 74). "Writing" is not synonymous with "stories" or "essays" or "themes." There are dozens of kinds of literature and writing forms - some long, some very short, some simple, some complex - which kids should hear, read, and which they CAN write. Writers (of any age) must be able to connect their writing to their real lives, real concerns, and real feelings. Writing is about COMMUNICATING. The writing process becomes relevant when children are allowed the choice to write about things in their own lives and experiential backgrounds. They need the freedom to let their voices be heard.
