M's Woodworking Wood is such a lovely material to work with, whether finished smooth , carved , painted, charred or otherwise manipulated it never ceases to be a wonder to me. I have earned my living from trees in one form or another, but I feel turning and sculpting is the form of woodworking closest to the essence of tree I've found so far. Links Home I'm self taught , with the exception of wood shop classes in high school where I learned basic tool use. Without inspiration and teenage pre-occupation with other things I didn't think about woodworking until sometime in my twenties, when I began to acquire tools, interest and practical needs. Furniture making was what I concentrated on for many years. Woodturning never interested me until a friend offered me a spin on his lathe, and since then it has become my main focus. Bowls are the foundation of my work though I am fascinated by hollow and non-functional vessels. I am currently exploring carving, texturing and painting vessels as means for creating contrasts and an attempt to further the creative process. When saws start up, men seem to rise from their sofa and drift outside, as if being commanded by a greater force, where work is being done. Not to help, mind you, but to watch and give advice. Latven is well known for his segment-constructed, lathe-turned vessels, which integrate curving ebony, tulipwood, and veneer grain patterns.
