Howard Lewin-Bio
The company logo was originally conceived for and used as bookends. That is back to back. Placing them front to front created the logo. It was kind of an accident, that they were placed front to front. I was removing some books that they had supported and placed them on the floor, happily front to front. I liked that look and used it to create my company logo. Our family started with the birth of Katherine Gabrielle (Gaby) August 1975, then Timothy Kipp,January 1977 and Penelope Meg in March 1980.
Established Custom Wood Design later part of l975.
Design, create and build custom cabinetry and furniture.
Established a reputation for completing work on time, and doing it well.
Employed 6 cabinet maker / apprentices by l980. Several have established their own businesses, and appear to be quite successful.
Gradually shifted business emphasis to higher quality furniture and cabinetry
Began creating art work.

Two ancient civilizations to use woodworking are the Egyptians and the Chinese. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings. The small print: I warrant nothing whatsoever about the quality of any site listed or its owner, not counting my own, of course. I check link validity now and then, but there's no guarantee they still exist or, for that matter, ever did. Sites containing Java errors, un-turnoff-able music, canned ads, blinking text, construction signs, and other annoyances have been omitted. I scorn but tolerate the occasional animated GIF.
Turnings (my personal favorites first, then alphabetically)
  • Gordon Dunphey the dean of Atlantic Canada woodturners. About four years ago, a devotee scanned in and published many photos of Gordon Dunphey's wonderful turnings. He noted at the top, "Not quite finished, but enjoy and come back in about a week for more." It has been a very long week. But the nearly many photos he did make available are well worth a visit. Observe and drool, fellow turners.
  • Maurice Gamblin , Turner of Wood The very best so far as I'm concerned. But I'm prejudiced. Maurice was (and is) my teacher and he and his family are close friends. Visit his site then visit his shop. Just drive to the northern end of Interstate 95 and turn left.
  • Andrew Noyes calls himself The Woodturner on the Web. Despite this, his site is well worth a visit and his turnings are excellent. He even marks sold items.

Rather than contaminate other discussions , better start one devoted to one of my favorite subject : wood turning and home-made lathes.Since quite some time I wanted to try wood turning to make some wind instruments, but it looked difficult and the lathes I saw were expensives. By chance , I found a book about it: "Lathes and turning techniques" -Taunton Press Inc. ( the "Fine Woodworking" people )The book is available in the " Bookstore Since I made this contraption, I have seen other home made lathes met a few wood turners, and learned a few facts. Woodturning is an old craft, it used to be done with very simple tools, we now have acces to ball-bearings, HSS steel, electric motors etc. wich greatly simplifies the work. The current trend is bowl turning, where the wood is held only by its base, this requires a very stable ( heavy, expensive) lathe. Instrument making ( winds of course , but also tuning pegs, tool handles, etc) is done by spindle turning, where the wood is held by the two ends. The vibrations are much less severe . I am not yet very exprienced, but I found the subject so interesting that I would like to share ideas with other people. Any comments?

Just turned a bowl I turned in my Wood Turning Class!
What a thrill it is to use wood that would have ended up in a dump somewhere and turn it into a piece of art. Let me share with you the excitment of creating things out of wood. The pleasure can be found at a local community college and in my case one Sunday afternoon a week. I love learning but this is so much fun! And what's wrong with having fun in your life. I always said do like the book, "Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow". So I don't see the money yet, but I do love it anyway! And everything is not about money!
So did you know that turning wood is easy! A lathe is used to spin the wood around and a group of gouges, 7 to 10, are used to cut into the wood making shapes like spindles and bowls and cups and on and on. Type in wood turning in your search engine and see all the examples around the world. Beautiful pieces all inlayed and cut in ways I can't figure out yet! I'll try and put up pictures of my masterpieces (intro to wood turning class masterpieces) tomorrow. Look back in this message in a few days.

Green spindle turning;
This E-mail came from Stuart, I have some logs of oak and cherry that was cut for firewood. I am trying to use the logs on my lathe to make spindles etc. After turning a couple of the oak logs and putting stain on them they have started to crack overnight. How can I prevent the spindles from cracking. The logs I am using are about 4 inches in diameter and was cut about two weeks ago.
Dear Stuart,
I am afraid that I do not have good news for you. Turning green wood is always fun but the down side is that if you do not control the drying process it will crack and if they do not crack they will turn every which way. One thought that I have would to try to slow the drying down by placeing the spindles in the chips that you make truning the spindles and keeping them moist and allow the wood to dry slower. I place green bowls that I have turned in brown paper bags and that seems to help. There are different material out that you can soak them in, like PEG, but that would not be the way I would go. I am going to guess that you turning around the pith, this is the most unstable part of the wood. splitting the wood into four parts may help. Good luck and let me know what happens. Keep on turning
