An Acoustic Analysis of Single-Reed Woodwind Instruments, with an Emphasis on Design and Performance Issues and Digital Waveguide Modeling Techniques by Gary P. Scavone
Discrete-time methods are presented for accurate time-domain implementation of single-reed woodwind instrument acoustic theory using digital waveguide techniques. Two methods for avoiding unstable digital waveguide scattering junction implementations, associated with taper rate discontinuities in conical air columns, are introduced. A digital waveguide woodwind tonehole model is presented which incorporates both shunt and series impedance parameters. Two-port and three-port scattering junction tonehole implementations are investigated and the results are compared with the acoustic literature. Several methods for modeling the single-reed excitation mechanism are discussed. Expressive controls within the context of digital waveguide woodwind models are presented, as well as model extensions for the implementation of register holes and mouthpiece variations. Issues regarding the control and performance of real-time models are discussed. Techniques for verifying and calibrating the time-domain behavior of these models are investigated and a study is presented which seeks to identify an instrument's linear and nonlinear characteristics based on periodic prediction.

About the Collector...
A native of Pocatello, Idaho, Willard Wayne Sorensen joined the local High School Band as an oboist in 1932. His family had little money, and the only instrument available to him was an oboe. Later he was to become oboe soloist with the Pocatello Symphony Orchestra, and eventually he received a scholarship to study the instrument at Brigham Young University where he earned his B.S. degree in music education in 1942. In 1951 he received his M.A. in music from San Jose State University. During World War II, Sorensen joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Camp Roberts, California, where he played in the 255th Army Ground Forces Band as well as in a special orchestra which played for Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Red Skelton, and other stars. After his release from military service, Sorensen taught for several years in Idaho; then, on September 1, 1948, he began a long career on the music faculty at San Jose State University in San Jose, California. He was also principal oboist in the Santa Clara Philharmonic Orchestra and played English horn with the San Jose Philharmonic.

Ceramic Woodwind Instruments
Translated by Satoshi Kanesaka, Torrence, California
[The following article first appeared in the Japanese magazine Pipers, July 1989, p. 6, and is reprinted here with the kind permission of the editor, Mr. M. Sugihara.]
Ceramic . It means pottery. According to the dictionary, it means, "Of or relating to the manufacture of any product made essentially from a nonmetallic mineral by firing at a high temperature: of or relating to such a product" (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary). Comparing it with traditional ceramics as defined above, "fine" ceramic is coming more into use in various fields. This is a product made from artificial materials to achieve its required functions in each application. We see these types of fine ceramic in daily products such as kitchen knives, integrated circuit substances, cutting tools, etc.
There was an exposition called the Nagoya Design Expo in '89 at Nagoya, Japan. The local government had a booth showing products of the twenty-first century, and their staff worked with ceramic manufacturers with the idea of playing orchestral music with ceramic-made musical instruments. Woodwinds and violins were made by a company called INAX Corporation.
Fine ceramic is known as a very hard material; however, material used for this experiment is called MACHINAX (machinable ceramics), which is soft enough for machining operations. It can be machined just like wood, fairly easily. INAX made a flute, an oboe, a clarinet, a bassoon, and a violin.

Review
'The major accomplishment of Strathclyde Concerto No. 9 is that, having chosen for starring roles those instruments which normally have only character parts - piccolo, alto flute, cor anglais, E flat and bass clarinets, double bassoon - the composer has written so resourcefully and so intriguingly well for them in just about every possible combination.'

    Tuning woodwinds
    Introduction
How is it that eight or more good woodwind players can sit down in an orchestral section and play out of tune? Sometimes it is because the players don't listen carefully enough. If the section is close to being in tune, then each player can listen and adjust. Other times it's because the section hasn't tuned up carefully enough. If the tuning is generally bad, then there is not much that you can do yourself by listening and adjusting, because you can't simultaneously lip up to match the bassoon and down to match the clarinet. Unless the tuning is reasonably close to start with, it will just be uncomfortable to play no matter what you do. Some of the advice given here is common sense, some is orchestral tradition and a tiny part of it has the authority of my professional expertise in musical acoustics. I don't claim to have a great ear, nor to play always in tune, but I have thought about it and tried to improve the tuning of sections in which I've played. Suggestions appreciated.

    The Winds
    Flute
The flute really isn't a woodwind anymore, and is normally made of metal now. It produces very bright and joyful notes. Piccolo
The piccolo is the smaller relative of the flute. It is exactly the same in all respects notes and fingerings but is a lot smaller than the flute and it has a higher pitch. Clarinet
The clarinet is a single reed instrument. It plays a wide range of music from classical to jazz. It also has a very wide range of notes that can be played. Oboe
The oboe looks very similiar to the clarinet except for the fact that it has a double reed. The oboe is widely used in classical compositions. Saxophone
The saxophone is a single reed instrument. Depending on the player it can sound mellow or strong. It does everything from pop to big band to jazz but also has its place in classical music. Bassoon
The bassoon is a double reed instrument. Because of its size, it plays very low notes and is often the backbone of the orchestra.
