Home Music Performance Musical Direction Composition ... Links Playing in Feast of the Pheasant John plays a bewildering array of recorders, crumhorns, shepherds pipes, and whistles in sizes ranging from tiny to enormous, and does so in a virtuoso manner than leaves audiences entranced - particularly when he performs his trademark pieces such as the Paginini Variations or the Faerie Dance. His now famous piece Schizophrenia - in which he plays two recorders and hums at the same time - always elicits gasps of surprise. Classically trained, he is an expert on early music and has played with a number of orchestras which specialise in this area. His ability to play with and absorb the influences of a wide range of musicians meant that he also found an equal capability in the folk scene and for many years was part of the immensely popular Fourth Estaite which included Robin Harper who is now better known as the Green Party's first Member of the Scottish Parliament. John has gone on to work with such stars as Johnnie and Phil Cunningham, and Anne Lorne Gillies. An early picture of Fourth Estaite in York

Music Woodwind instruments
Bagpipe (gaita gallega), Spain, ca. 1930
Roughly speaking, wind instruments can be divided into two groups: woodwind and brass instruments. Woodwind instruments are the flutes, including, given their historical development, the transverse flutes now made of silver, as well as oboes, clarinets, bassoons, the saxophone and bagpipes. The common feature of the woodwind instruments is that they use a stream of air produced by blowing as the primary source of sound. This stream of air stimulates the column of air inside the instrument, producing natural vibrations. The pitch is altered by changing the length of the air column, using valves operated by keys in the case of the transverse flute or fingerholes on fipple flutes.
From the transverse flute to the piccolo The most important of the flutes is the transverse flute.
Transverse flutes from the exhibition diplay case
Originally coming from the Orient, it has been known in Europe since the Middles Ages, although only a few instruments still survive from before 1700. In the 18th century, instruments of this kind produced numerous virtuoso players of the highest calibre as well as an immense body of diverse literature. Around 1800, the transverse flute was found to be weak in its tone and its uneven-sounding scale of notes, previously held up as an asset, was perceived as defective. Instruments makers tried to deal with this by adding additional keys. But the decisive improvement did not come until the invention of the circular bore by the Munich flute virtuoso Theobald Böhm, represented in the Deutsches Museum exhibition by three flutes. Alongside the standard transverse flute, the only others to have survived have been the somewhat smaller treble flute which plays about a third higher and lasted until the beginning of the 19th century and the piccolo, playing an octave higher and still with us today.

BLOWN-WOODWIND INSTRUMENTS Blown-woodwind instruments produce sound by blowing to vibrate the tube and reeds of the instruments. The tone produced depends on the strength of the wind. Different strengths can produce pitches that differ by a perfect fifth or an octave. Its origin can be traced back to BC 1100, the Shang Dynasty, when there were Xun, He (Sheng), and Yan (Da Xiao) etc. The more popular wind instruments include Sheng, Suona, Di and Xiao. Dizi (Di, Transverse Flute) Range: d2 - g4 (G key type) Early in the reign of Emperor Wudi (141-88 BC) of the Han dynasty, the di flute was introduced to China from western areas. into china and standardised in construction through revisions. But broadly speaking, such features as its bamboo make, edged tone and side-holes have given the evidence of its existence in the ensembles of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). Archaeological finds revealed one of the earliest type of flute unearthed from a tomb in Hubei province. It had a very similar construction as a modern bamboo type, only without the hole for membrane. Despite these old flutes being 8000 years old, they can still be played.

Brass and woodwinds
Ages 5 to 8
by Nita Gill What's below: Why is the recorder a good choice? What are the disadvantages of playing the recorder? When should my child start taking recorder lessons? How much will a recorder cost? ... How much will a flute cost? Why is the recorder a good choice?
It requires less breath control than other woodwinds It's easier to handle Fingering is fairly logical
. A recorder's finger patterns are not as complex as other woodwinds' finger patterns: A child lifts a finger from an opening and the sound gets higher; he puts a finger down and the sound gets lower. With other woodwinds, children must learn combinations that require a great deal more coordination. What are the disadvantages of playing the recorder?
Recorders are not played in orchestras or marching band
. If your child is looking forward to playing in the school band, he'll probably need to find a different instrument. But it's still a great instrument to start with, because it's less complex than other woodwinds, and your child can switch to another instrument as he gets older. When should my child start taking recorder lessons?

Osmun Music
Dealers in fine brass and woodwind instruments
By Dr. James Heywood Alexander, Professor Emeritus, Cleveland State University The firm of Osmun Music builds and repairs professional grade wind and brass instruments. Founded in 1976 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company grew steadily. By 1992 sales had reached the million-dollar mark. Having outgrown its previous business space in Belmont, Massachusetts, the firm moved to spacious new quarters in Belmont. The staff now includes a dozen employees. The company publishes an international newsletter, maintains a home page on the Internet, and sponsors master classes by prestigious performers at its headquarters. Starting originally as an instrument repair business, the fledgling company that Osmun founded soon began selling new brass instruments as well. Starting with Paxman French horns, Osmun Brass, as it was then called, began to develop an extensive inventory featuring the best new brass instruments available. It became a major Yamaha dealer for professional lines. Recently it has also been selling instruments made in Germany by Engelbert Schmid. The business has grown to include woodwinds and instrument manufacture. A major market for Osmun trombones is in Japan.
Interview with Robert Osmun
Mr. Osmun, you are the President of a company serving international needs for professional brass and woodwinds. Would you describe briefly in your own words the nature of your business?
