http://www.blackwoodconservation.org/music.html
If you have ever heard the mellow tones of a jazz or classical clarinet solo, you have been listening to the natural sound of an instrument made of mpingo. In the last century, cocuswood from the Caribbean region was the wood of choice for woodwinds, but the species was driven into economic extinction by that demand. African blackwood is now the wood used exclusively for fine quality woodwind instruments. Their manufacture demands a perfect piece of wood free of all defects to allow the intricate machining necessary to create such a complex instrument. To quote flutemaker Casey Burns , "African blackwood, which makes an excellent flute, is now the standard by which all other flute tonewoods are judged." Since blackwood is a tree that grows twisted and full of flaws, extracting high quality timber is extremely difficult. Graders at the mill reject up to 90% of the wood to the scrap pile. Additionally, instrument makers are finding that they lose up to 20% of their workpieces during the machining process at the factory. It is thought that this may be due to the exposure of mpingo to fires in excess of what would occur naturally during its growth. This may create hairline cracks and invisible defects in the wood that cause it to explode apart on the lathe during manufacture. Such large amounts of wastage put an added demand on the remaining stands of timber. African blackwood's exceptional stability under extremes of humidity and temperature is a necessary characteristic for instruments played by blowing air into them. Its density and fine grain structure allow it to be machined much as if it were metal. Its tight grain and oily nature allows it to be polished to a beautiful sheen. Not only does blackwood have no peers for this purpose, no suitable natural replacement is known. Composite materials made of blackwood dust and resins, as well as various plastic compounds have been used for the manufacture of woodwind instruments, but their acceptance among professional players is poor.

A Big Welcome to the
Chesterfield Musketeers Showband
The Chesterfield Musketeers were formed following the disbandment in 1981 of the highly successful Chesterfield Toppers Carnival Band. They entered into the Contest world on July 5th 1981, at Hoyland Nether Barnsley and within one month collected their first, First Prize Major Award. At present the marching membership consists of around 16 to 25 playing members, with instruments ranging from Percussion through to Saxophones and Trumpets. The main uniform is a copy of the 1994 epic film about the "Three Musketeers", with the second being based on Alexandre Dumas" novel of the legendary heroes. Since 1981 the band have grown from strength to strength claiming most titles available. The most notable being crowned not once, but a historic, record three times Isle of Man World Champions Although all our members are Amateur, they try to maintain a very professional attitude. To a few of them it it a hobby, but to the rest, it is life..... Just take your time and browse around, and should you require any more info or anything then just contact me.

FROM PVC
Here are a host of techniques and solutions applicable to the challenging endeavor of building woodwind instruments from over-the-counter PVC plumbing products and other readily available materials. They originate from the author's workshop notes based on actual instruments he has made, historical artifacts created by him, hand sketches and CAD drawings. This work involves various types and sizes of flutes, both with and without keys. These are proven techniques which are very practical to the maker of conventional and experimental musical instruments. Chapters in this volume cover a wide variety of techniques used in the flute making process, shop requirements, work shop safety, designing the instrument, joint design, bending PVC pipe, tapered and enlarged bores, outside finish, drilling holes, press fits, hand shearing metals, fitting-up and regulating key mechanisms, marking and layout, tuning hints and an evaluation of different plastics for use in construction. Six sample projects are presented complete with diagrams and specifications. They include the Renaissance Flute in G, Bb Military Fife, Three-Way Instrument, Irish Flute, Native North American Indian Love Flute and the 4-Keyed Flute. Richly illustrated with drawing, photos and CAD layouts complete with specifications. Appendices provide a list of suppliers, description of common pipe materials and bibliography. New updated and expanded edition.

Woodwind Instrument Pitch Through The Ages
Brian Blood
There are few woodwind instruments surviving from before 1500. Modern makers have had to work backwards from surviving Renaissance instruments using paintings, carvings and woodcuts of the period to offer inspiration and encouragement. Of course, the artists were not that interested in providing images that could be used as 'working drawings' and with so much conjecture, makers do not necessarily agree with their competitors' results. Even when one has some iconography to help supply the external shape, one has no information about the details of the internal bore, which are vital when determining the correct tuning systems, nor any evidence as to the appropriate tone colour or pitch. The older renaissance high pitch for wind instruments, which appears to have been about a'=462 Hz. - a semitone above modern pitch - was replaced, in the middle of the seventeenth century, by a French chamber pitch of about a'=394 Hz., - which is one whole tone below a'=440 Hz. By the early part of the eighteenth century, French chamber pitch, in turn, was superseded by a pitch of about a'=409 Hz. Even where we have surviving instruments, and as we look at later periods there is a corresponding increase in surviving originals, without having a clear idea as to how the instrument should be played (for example, how hard one should blow), determination of pitch will be approximate.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition A woodwind instrument is a musical instrument A musical instrument is a device that has been modified or constructed with the purpose of making music. In principle, anything that somehow produces sound can serve as a musical instrument, but the expression is reserved generally to items that have that specific purpose. The academic study of musical instruments is called organology Instruments are often divided by the way in which they generate sound:

In conjunction with the player's lips and, on many woodwind instruments, a reed, it produces the basic musical tones that characterize each particular instrument, from the single reed of the clarinet or saxophone to the flared turned brass tube of the horns, such as the trumpet, trombone, tuba, and the bugle. The double reed of the oboe or bassoon may also be thought of as a mouthpiece, although it is rarely referred to as such, because only the reed is placed in the mouth, while on the clarinet, a portion of the instrument itself is as well.

You'll surely find an instrument from this large family that perks up your ears. The narrator shows you the two groups - the flutes (flute, piccolo, and recorder) and the reeds (clarinet, bassoon, oboe, saxaphone). You'll see each one and hear what each sounds like. Flutes get their haunting sound from how much vibrating air is blown in them. P. J. uses bottles filled with water at different levels to show you how the size of the flute creates the sound.
