Saxophones Woodwind refers to a group of instruments in which sound is produced by the vibration of reeds in the mouthpiece (such as with the clarinet, oboe or saxophone) or by the passing of air across the mouthpiece (such as with the flute.) Woodwind instruments have a long, thin column of air. The lowest note is played with all the tone holes closed, when the column is longest. The column is shortened by opening up holes successively, starting from the open end. At the other end, there is something that controls airflow — an air jet for the flute family and cane reeds for other woodwinds. The term woodwinds also refers to the section of a band or orchestra composed of woodwind instruments. Members of the woodwind family include the recorder, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, flute and piccolo. If you choose to play a woodwind instrument, you'll find there'll be opportunities to participate in a wide variety of musical venues including woodwind ensembles, wind bands, jazz bands, orchestras, concert bands and marching bands. Children as young as five can begin learning the flute, oboe and clarinet. Physical factors such as the size of the child's hands and the development of his or her teeth are important. Because the saxophone and bassoon are larger and heavier, it's usually best to have children start playing after age six. English horns and bassoons are also available through special order.

I have grouped our Renaissance instruments according to your terminology to make it easier for you to understand. The material of the pipe may be ivory, metal, glass, etc, though for most types the traditional material has been wood and makers generally serve their apprenticeship as wood turners. The way to make a sound with these instruments provides an additional way to group them: By blowing a jet of air onto a sharp edge provided by the instrument, as in recorders and flutes: Elizabeth on the Flute (sample sound included) Addame on the Recorder (sample sound included) By causing the airstream to set in vibration a "reed" made from natural cane cultivated for reed-making purposes in the South of France and elsewhere, as in the case of crumhorns, shawms, bagpipes, etc.: Sol on the Crumhorn (sample sound included) Elenore on the Shawm (sample sound included) William on the Glastonbury Pipe (sample sound included) Brian on the Bagpipe Morgana on the Racket ... They consist basically of a tube, usually with a series of holes. Air is blown into the top of the tube, either across a hole or past a flexible reed. This makes the air inside the tube vibrate and give out a note. The pitch of the note depends on the length of the tube, a shorter tube giving a higher note, and also on which holes are covered. Blowing harder makes the sound louder. KEYS AND CURVES To produce deep notes, woodwind instruments have to be quite long. The tube is therefor curved so that the player can hold the instrument, as in this alto saxophone. Keys allow the fingers to open and close holes all along the instrument. ALL HOLES COVERED Covering all seven holes in a simple pipe makes the air in the whole tube vibrate, giving the note middle C. FIRST THREE HOLES COVERED This shortens the vibrating air column to two-thirds of the tube, giving the higher note G.

This is especially evident in woodwind instruments, which vary greatly in construction and composition. Some of them aren't even made of wood any longer, and the modern saxophone has been made of brass - not wood at all - from the start. But most woodwind instruments are made of or contain polymers Much has been done to make these instruments more durable and easier to care for. This includes everything from oils and finishes which protect the wood, which is a natural polymer , to constructing the entire instrument (including the reeds) of syntheitc (or man-made) polymers which closely emmulate the sound of a wood instrument. The oils and finishes themselves are also made of natural or synthetic polymers. And still other instruments - such as the flute and the piccolo have gone largely to metal construction, noticeably brightening the tone of the instruments. And, though synthetics have come a long way, there is little argument that a woodwind instrument made of WOOD has a rich and distinctive sound which is hard to duplicate with any man-made polymers.
