History
Woodwinds first appeared in the Neolithic Period as bone whistles. A hollow reed with one end closed was found to produce sound. This was accomplished by blowing across the open end. The most ancient musical instrument is a Syrinx or Pandean Pipes. It consists of a row of different lengths of hollow reeds. The Greeks and Romans had many woodwind instruments known as auloi and tibiae. The term flute was used for all single and double-reeded instruments and those with whistle mouthpieces. They eventually became the woodwind family because the instruments were originally made of wood. The development of the individual instruments is discussed in its section.
Description
A woodwind is defined as a tube or pipe through which the performer blows. A vibration is produced by the column of air or the reed. The pitch is determined by the length of the tube. Notes are produced by stopping the holes with the fingers or by keys. This changes the length of the tube.

2003 ABCP Newsletter Rolex Awards Associate Laureate Welcome to the home page of the African Blackwood Conservation Project (ABCP). The aim of this project is to help replenish this valuable tree in Tanzania. Most people will not have knowingly seen blackwood but almost everyone will have heard it, for it is the premier wood of choice for fine concert-quality woodwind instruments such as clarinets, oboes and flutes, as well as being used in the manufacture of bagpipes. Blackwood is also the finest material available today for producing ornamental turning. In its African homeland, it is used to make intricate and highly detailed carvings, and plays a vital role in the ecology of the East African savannah. This website serves to document our efforts to perpetuate this remarkable natural resource. Despite its importance as a world timber there have been few conservation efforts to replenish the species. Although it is not yet on the endangered list the ABCP is taking efforts now to help assure that eventuality will not occur. To learn more about the wood, its homeland, this project, the people who are trying to make it happen and how you can help, click on the links in the banner above or the sitemap below. You may also

The Story of Exotic Woods Co., Inc.
The company was founded by Gulab Gidwani, a mechanical
engineer by profession, in 1975 to provide musical instrument woods
to Gibson Co., which, at that time, was owned by Norlin Industries.
From such humble beginnings, we have grown over the years to
provide musical instrument woods to major manufacturers of stringed
instruments, woodwind instruments, pool cues and custom cabinetry. At present, we stock more than a million dollars in inventory, of approximately 50 different species of wood, at 2 locations in New Jersey, approximately 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia, PA. As we have our own vacuum kilns and de-humidification kiln, we are one of the very few companies in the world who provide kiln- dried Ebony. We also provide milling services such as re-sawing, dimensioning, planing, gluing, thickness sanding and dowelling.

Woodwind instrument
A woodwind instrument is a musical instrument in which sound is produced by blowing through a mouthpiece against an edge or by a vibrating reed, and in which the pitch is varied by opening or closing holes in the body of the instrument. Woodwind instruments were originally made of wood, as the word woodwind implies. There are three main sorts of woodwind instrument:
  • Single Reed instruments use a reed a thinly sliced piece of cane, (or less frequently, plastic) that is held against the aperture of the mouthpiece with a ligature. When air is forced between the reed and the mouthpiece, the vibrations create the sound. Single reed instruments include the clarinet and saxophone families of instruments. Double Reed instruments use two precisely cut, small pieces of cane joined together at the base . The finished, bound reed is inserted into the top of the instrument and vibrates as air is forced between the two pieces of bound cane. There are two sub-families
    • exposed double reed instruments, where the reed goes between the player's lips. The

The Flute The flute, with the drum, can claim the oldest ancestry of all musical instruments. Originally it was a single reed, then a group of reeds (Pan-pipes), and eventually the complex and wondrous instrument of today, fashioned of silver, gold or platinum. The flute is almost as expressive as the human voice and often more beautiful. David Cramer Elegantly powerful is a good description of David Cramer's flute playing. His round, pear-shaped sound is rich and blends well with other instruments. Early on David listened to many recordings and attended concerts by the Cleveland Orchestra. As a developing flutist, David played in the Curtis Institute orchestra. "There is nothing I would rather do than play in an orchestra..."
The Oboe This marvelous instrument is relatively "modern" having originated in the 17th century. It is extremely difficult to play, because air must be forced through a double reed which is carefully shaped by each player himself. The English Horn (neither a horn nor English) is descended from the old curved alto oboe, shaped to resemble a hunting horn.

  • Climate Problems
    Wooden Flute Maintenance
This is PREVENTATIVE maintenance - cracks in flutes occur because simple precautions are not taken. So please take note of these points, which are collated from advice given by Williams, Ormiston and other experienced woodwind manufacturers:-
  • Always take the flute apart after playing. This allows the moisture to dry out better without getting into the wood. Store it away from extremes of temperature, and keep it wrapped in a cloth or in a case, so it can adjust gradually to climate changes.
  • Before assembling a new flute, grease the cork tenons with vaseline or cork grease. This will aid assembly and make the joints perfectly airtight. You should take great care at all times when assembling the flute, the joints should be brought together with a twisting motion and not pushed straight on.
  • Occasionally when the flute is dry - i.e before playing (it needs to be left a full day since it was last played), push through the wooden sections a cotton rag dampened with ALMOND OIL (from a chemist). This prevents moisture getting into the wood. You can also rub a little oil into the outside of the flute. The bore needs oiling once a week for a couple of months when the flute is new, then monthly, and finally after the first year, and for older flutes, six monthly will be often enough.
  • After playing remove excess moisture from the bore with a dry cotton rag on a pull through, or with a loose fitting flute mop. This prevents localised wet patches.

Previous: Percussion Instruments Next: Brass The piccolo flute oboe English horn ... clarinet , and saxophone are all instruments of the woodwind family. Most of these instruments were once of made of wood , and because they are played by blowing with air or wind , they are called woodwind All woodwind instruments are made out of a tube, usually with holes in it. When all holes are covered, air goes all the way to the end of the tube and makes a low sound. When the holes are open, the air goes only a little way and make a high sound. The woodwind instrument with the shortest tubing and the highest sound is the piccolo. To further increase their range of notes, most of the woodwind instruments come in different sizes (eg. soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, etc.). Woodwind instruments may make sounds in three different ways. Some, like the flute, make a sound by blowing air across a tone hole.
