AMAZING WOODCARVINGS AND GLITTERING TINWARE FROM OAXACA
    Figuras de Madera y Hojalata
Text and Photos by Phil Saviano
Oaxaca woodcarvings, an international craze, are the best-selling Mexican folk art in the United States. Also called by the Spanish word "alebrijes," they are the ultimate collectible, prized for their originality and wild colors. Hand-carved, hand-painted, no two are exactly alike! The colonial city of Oaxaca (pronounced wah-HAH-ka) is nestled in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, six hours by bus south-east of Mexico City. It is known for its year-round Spring climate, cobblestone streets and marvelous stone buildings and plazas. But in the nearby central valley, there lives an indigenous population descended from the Mixtec and Zapotec Indians. Speaking 52 dialects of eight distinct languages, (in addition to Spanish) they are among the most inspired and talented craftspeople in all of Mexico. The variety and quality of Oaxacan woodcarvings, tin work, ceramics, baskets, leather and fiber products, and weavings and textiles, is both inspiring and amazing! WOODCARVINGS The artists who make these whimsical wooden figures live in three villages. The most picturesque and the closest to the city is called Arrazola. It lies in the shadow of Monte Alban, the ancient Zapotec holy city whose ruins overlook the valley from a nearby mountaintop. The other villages are San Martin Tilcajete and La Union Tejalapan, both about an hour's journey away from Oaxaca City.

INFORMATION ABOUT CRIBS - WOOD CARVED COLLECTING CRIBS - CRIBS FIGURES Origin, Development and Spreading of the Crib Tradition We know next to nothing about the tradition of the Crib's date of origin. Like almost everything that has its origin amongst the people, the Crib tradition originally evolved out of several roots. One of these is certainly the large number of mosaics and paintings surrounding Christ's birth that were created as far back as the second century, most prominently in the area of Italy. The theme was also attractive for other Mediterranean countries, however with representations initially remaining two-dimensional. Not before many years later, did sculptors show interest in the theme and begin to represent the group surrounding Christ's birth in form of reliefs most of which featured extremely large figures. From these, the modern form of the Crib gradually evolved displaying movable, i.e. individually positionable figures. Until far into the 16th century, we have no knowledge at all about the appearance of house cribs. And even then, very little has become known about their existence. House cribs were originally a privilege limited to the aristocracy. Only in the 17th century did they become popular tradition. Their great breakthrough took place 1785, after Emperor Joseph the Second's anticlerical decrees, which completely forbade Cribs to be put up in churches or monasteries. By this time, however, the people had already got used to the religious tradition of crib representations and they no longer wanted to be without them. Although the Cribs were removed from the church, they were instantly re-erected in a house or farm next-door. The French and Habsburgian authorities had not in the least imagined that this would happen

    Stan Fillingsness
    Norwegian Woodcarving
Stan Fillingsness looks over a Norwegian woodcarving pattern book. Almost twenty years ago, Stan Fillingsness of Canton met Arnold Bortnem of Sioux Falls when he took a woodcarving class Arne was teaching. Now their roles have been reversed as Stan took Arne on as his apprentice in Norwegian woodcarving techniques. Arne is already an accomplished carver, and because of his own Norwegian heritage had always been fascinated by the traditional acanthus leaf style of that tradition, but couldn’t figure out on his own how to learn its intricacies. Stan has taken classes with master carvers from Norway, has traveled to Norway, and has a large collection of books and carving patterns, so he was the perfect teacher for Arne. And for Stan, Arne was the perfect student: “He was number one on my list of names. I knew he could do it, and I also know that he will pass it on to some other people.” Arne Bortnem carves a Norwegian acanthus leaf clock. Arne says he gained an in-depth understanding of the designs and techniques unique to Norwegian carving, learned the proper words and standards, and improved his skill. Arne’s projects included a clock, decorative spoon, traditional mangletre (board used to smooth clothes), and a kubbestol (traditional chair) as his final project. “I want to pick up a tool and make the type of cut that a master carver who did this kind of work would make, rather than chip and chisel away like most of us amateurs do,” he says.

    130. Woodcarving In Macedonia
woodcarving in Macedonia, this takes you to the storefront. The creative work of woodcarving continued throughout the centuries of the Ottoman oppression.
    http://macedoniadirect.com/drvo/gallery/wood1.htm
Woodcarving in Macedonia Products Books Music Videos Instruments Folk Costumes Wood Carving Icons Terra Cottas In the relatively small area of Macedonia there were many churches and monasteries of great wealth. They possessed frescoes, icons, carved wooden iconostases, Episcopal thrones, choirs, lamps, rare books and manuscripts, icon lamps, chalices and many relics. Many of them were destroyed, especially during the period of Ottoman rule. Many churches were looted and destroyed, some were converted into mosques and as a result of the poor political and economic conditions, a large number were neglected and left to deteriorate. During these difficult times, Macedonia was traversed by travel writers and men of education who knew of the large cultural treasure maintained in churches and monasteries and so they easily plundered them. Loads of rare books and manuscripts, old icons and objects were taken from Macedonia in order to enrich the libraries, museums and galleries throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Such was the destiny of the rich works of art created by Macedonian medieval woodcarvers through the ages. For example, the beautiful 14th century
