I have been carving wood utensils from hard maple and other locally available species continuously since . This work is done in the belief that our tools of daily living should be well designed and carefully made. I am pleased that these objects are part of the preparation and presentation of food and that they can contribute to the celebratory aspect of dining. My Table Tools tm , made from figured hard maple, include 5 salad servers, a serving spoon and 4 additional utensils for preparing or serving food. The individual utensils are available right or left-handed. All work is done solely by me. Table Tools tm are priced between $15 and $116. I also carve One-of-a-kind Spoons that have sculptural qualities. These are typically treated as decorative objects. (Using a large spoon as a dining table centerpiece is a an example). Most of these spoons are made from hard maple but I occasionally carve other local woods. In recent years I have been working with European buckthorn, an introduced, highly invasive, non-commercial species. It is a strong wood and has an attractive yellow-orange-pink color along with unusual figure caused by an atypical pore arrangement. Prices for my one-of-a-kind spoons start at just under $200 and range to approximately $600.

The museum is stark and clean. Joe's sculptures stand on gray wall-to-wall carpeting against blank white walls, illuminated by dim track lighting. Modern and no-nonsense, like the interior of early '70s Presbyterian churches. Starting with the banishment of Adam and Eve , scenes from the Bible are revealed chronologically. The sculptures are impressive but roughhewn, with oddly chiseled topography in the pale wood, somewhere on the finesse scale between a Rodin and a chainsaw Bigfoot. A lifelong bachelor, Barta taught math and phys ed in Spooner, WI, in the 1940s. The carving museum was started in 1951. His inspiration came from a series of revelations: a vision of Mary, Queen of the Universe; dreams in which God spoke to him and told him what to do; a disembodied voice with a German accent gave him the go ahead on the Last Supper. That one took four and a half years. The brochure notes that Joe's Last Supper "will outlast DaVinci's delicate painting, as it is flaking off the walls in Milan, Italy." They may represent dead ancestors, act as images for controlling magical powers, reflect the wealth and power of their owner or be sold as souvenirs for tourists and art collectors. The skill of the sculptor is to shape such objects from a single piece of wood with an adze ( a small axe with a horizontal blade), expressing his own creativity within the bounds of conventional local styles. Stools, thrones and formal arrangements of seating are connected to the display of prestige, as are implements for public smoking, eating and drinking. These items are powerfully associated with the individual and often must be destroyed or hidden on the death of the individual.

Welcome to the woodcarving web site of Mike Bloomquist. This is an excellent example of a hobby gone horribly out of control. I have received many awards and compliments on the quality of my work, but please keep in mind as you view this site that these pieces are the result of several years practice and lots of encouragement from God and others. Many times at demonstrations and shows, the reactions I hear to these are "I could never do that, I have no artistic ability". Neither do I! Some people are 'naturals', for the rest of us it just takes a little extra exercise, practice, and guidance. None of the carvings you see here would have happened without tons of support from my family, and the many friends, woodcarvers, and woodcarver friends I have around me. If you're a beginning carver or just thinking about starting, please visit the groups at the bottom of this page, and my links page. Try to find a woodcarver or a woodcarving club near you. In the area of sharing the knowlege, we seem to be a fairly homogeneous group. It's a rare woodcarver who isn't very eager to share the craft and help a novice into this wonderful art.
