    Author: Ingman, Heather
    Paperback
    Published: July 1998
    St. Martin's Press
ISBN: 0312215150 Focusing on six key writers of the inter-war period Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Richardson, Ivy Compton-Burnett, Elizabeth Bowen, Rose Macaulay and Jean Rhys this book looks at the way these writers explore the mother-daughter relation, finding in it a key to their identity as women and as artists. By situating the mother-daughter story within a specific historical context, Heather Ingman is able, for the first time, to draw parallels between the work of women novelists and that of female psychoanalysts Helena Deutsch, Melanie Klein and Karen Homey during the inter-war period. Herbook argues that inter-war women writers renegotiate motherhood, rescuing it from Freud's hostile account and remolding it to suit women's actual experience in a way that empowers them as artists. Clientele: Cornell's English Department offers courses about genres (utopias, folklore, detective story) as well as traditional courses about specific authors and chronological periods. The departments of English and Comparative Literature emphasize the history and analysis of critical theory (e.g., feminism, semiotics) as related to popular culture as well as the canon. The collection serves other departments, including Theatre Arts, Linguistics, the Society for the Humanities, Women's Studies, and African Studies and Research. Existing collection ECS 4 Lang W The current collection covers all British, U. S., Australian and Canadian literatures and language, plus basic English-language titles from the Pacific Islands. Historically, Anglo-American literature was collected at a research level with 4+ strength in the Medieval and 18th century portions of the collection. Major exceptions to level 4 coverage have been Celtic language and literature, journalism, and Australian and Canadian literature; some areas of these holdings are at a research level, but overall they support a level 3 (instructional) level. Current collection CCI 4 Lang W Primary texts, bibliographies, and secondary criticismin that orderare all necessary to maintain the collection at a 4 level. Primary texts are mostly in English, but our holdings of secondary works represent all major European languages. As the purchasing power of funding declines, we have bought fewer critical works in foreign languages. However, a special effort is made to acquire all scholarly titles treating themes and motifs in literature, and journals devoted to the works of individual authors . Titles from selected small presses are received on blanket order .

A to Z Help Subject Guides: Literature Author Guides This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance. I think other sources do a better job of that than I can. As with everything on the Web, many of these guides are ephemeral; they disappear from the Web almost as soon as they appear. If you encounter a bad connection in this guide, please let me know about it. Another point: this page is NOT a catalog of every single text available on the net. Female physicians are in a male-dominant occupation, and they are often not fully accepted by colleagues and/or the general public. The suicide rate for female physicians is 4 times the national female rate. Scholars have speculated that this trend may be due to the changing roles of women, in addition to the high stress of their jobs and easy access to drugs.
